Utah State has used a #21 men's basketball team and a third-place finish in the WAC for the women to edge closer to Boise State in the race for the WAC Commissioner's Cup.
I reported last week that Boise State had a 48.25 to 42 lead over Utah State following the track and swimming championships. That lead is now down to 53.25 for Boise State to 50 for USU. New Mexico State is third with 36.75 followed by Idaho (36). Fresno State has begun its move by jumping from sixth to fifth with 35.25. Hawai'i (34.50) is now sixth, followed by Nevada with 33, Louisiana Tech with 29 and San Jose State with 22.25. (Note: I am adding in the regular season results for basketball, which account for half of a school's score. (Note: I am also giving the last-place team (Louisiana Tech in men's and San Jose State in women's) one full point since they will finish in last place after the tournament is over and the points allocated.)
Utah State has been in the upper half of the Cup Standings but isn't likely to finish in second. Fresno State and Nevada (along with Boise State) have traditionally dominated the spring sports and should battle New Mexico State for the top spots along with Utah State.
If Boise State is fortunate enough to duplicate last year's spring sports, when they scored 34.75 points, the Broncos can finish with 93 points. Keep in mind that that performance included a last place by the women's golf team and a seventh-place finish by the men's golf team.
