The Broncos trounced Seattle 14-1 and handed Southern Utah a 2-0 setback at the Boise State SpringHill Suites Invitational at Mountain Cove Softball Field yesterday to even their season mark at 8-8.
Boise State's bats have shown signs of life this weekend, never more so than the opener, when six Broncos hit round-trippers. Junior Aubray Zell, who fired the school's first no-hitter on Saturday, came back to get the win over the Thunderbirds in the nightcap.
Back-to-back homers by Kellie Caplan and Holly Bourke provided an early 4-0 edge over Seattle. But the hits just kept coming. Sophomore Megan Harvey sent a shot over the fence in the third and Boise State batted around to score nine runs in a devastating fourth inning. Christina Capobianco hit her second homer of the weekend, Allie Crump launched her fourth of the season and freshman Mackenzie Whyte hit her first collegiate home run in the offensive display. Crump got the complete-game win by allowing just four hits and striking out eight.
Boise State's bats went quiet again in the second game, but Zell struck out seven in getting her second win in as many days. Crump (3-3 in the game) helped out her fellow pitcher with liner up the middle to score Caplan in the third. Devon Bridges homered in the sixth for added measure and the Broncos had the sweep.
The Broncos face Seattle again today at noon at Mountain Cove.
