#8 Oregon State Shows Boise State Where It Wants to Be

The Oregon State gymnastics team showed why it is ranked #8 and Boise State is 16th tonight in Corvallis.

The Beavers were highly consistent and topped the 196-barrier while Boise State was not and did not.  Oregon State scored 196.875 points to just 195.375 points.

#8 Oregon State Gymnasts Lead Boise State

Oregon State has 98.450 to 98.075 for Boise State after two rotations.  Boise State is right now ahead of the 196 pace it needs to be a Top 12 team and that is what is important.  But they also need to stay close to the Beavers so they know in their minds that they can beat them.

Women's Mountain West Track Standings

There are seven finals completed:

1.  San Diego State 47 points (41 projected) +6
2.  New Mexico 42 (43) -1
3.  TCU 41 (32 projected) +9
4.  Air Force 40 (45) -5
4.  Colorado State 35 (25) +10

Oklahoma beat Boise State in the five-inning rule.

Analysis of Third Day of 2012 MWC Swimming & Diving Championships

There were six finals today at the 2012 Mountain West Swimming & Diving Championships in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Heading into today, San Diego State had a slight lead over Boise State, and we indicated that Boise State should jump back on top.  However, two swimmers who were projected to get big points for Boise State in the 200-yard freestyle did not enter in the race, scoring points elsewhere for the team.  Two swimmers projected to score big for Boise State in the 100-yard backstroke also did not enter.  So factor that in but the projected points from the six finals were:

Boise State 260
San Diego State 203

Boise State scored 211 points today to 204 for San Diego State, so a net gain of 50 for the Aztecs.  Because of this, SD State once again is the favorite to win tomorrow.  The Broncos scored points in other events to do well there, but only scored 29 in the 200-free and just 15 in the 100-yard backstroke.

1.  Boise State 506 (510 projected) -4
2.  San Diego State 503 (478 projected) +25
3.  UNLV 379.5
4.  Wyoming 302
5.  TCU 238
6.  New Mexico 232
7.  Colorado State 204
8.  Air Force 129

As it stands now, San Diego State will win by 50 points.  The Broncos were ahead of projections because they sent their 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke swimmers to other events.  They did well there, but did not enter the latter two events and 95 projected points in the 200 free and 100 backstroke of course weren't there and Boise State scored 44 points instead.

Still seven finals tomorrow and anything can still happen, but at this point it appears like a great effort by the Bronco swimmers will come up short.

Boise State Leads MWC Swimming after 3 Days

Boise State has the lead alright, but not near as much as expected or hoped for.  San Diego State has one of its best events, the 1,650-yard freestyle, coming tomorrow and if they come through there, it will be very tough for the Broncos to win.

1.  Boise State 506
2.  San Diego State 503
3.  UNLV 379.5
4.  Wyoming 302
5.  TCU 238
6.  New Mexico 232
7.  Colorado State 204
8.  Air Force 129

San Diego State Piles Up 39 Points in 100-Yard Backstroke

Champions don't go down easy.  Now that San Diego State's lead was erased, the Aztecs have come storming back.  They scored 39 points here as opposed to 27 projected, so a gain of 12 for San Diego State.    Boise State scored 15, one over projection.

Bronco Women's Tennis Team About to Begin

Boise State is about to take on Pepperdine in sunny Malibu, California.

Bosch Takes 3rd in 5,000

Unfortunately, Sawyer didn't have any other company in blue and orange on the winner's stand. Vince Hamilton was seeded fourth, Jeff Howard sixth and Scott Foley eighth.  The Broncos' team chances, thus, took a big hit here.

Felix Continues to Lead Heptathlon

Kurt Felix scored 746 points in the pole vault and continues to lead the heptathlon at the 2012 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Felix has 5,002 points to lead Michael Tibbs of Air Force (4,651) with one event remaining, the 1,000-meter run.  It isn't one of Kurt's best, but he has a sizable lead and should prevail.

Boise State's Kimberley Miller Leads Long Jump

Emphasis of Blue-Gray Tennis Tournament on "Gray"

Rain is ruining one of the great tennis tournaments in the country.  Boise State's match with Auburn will now start no earlier than 3 p.m. and I'm wondering if it will be played today at all.

Analysis of Morning Swims

Boise State got a boost when Chelsea Miller, seeded 12th, became the third Bronco to qualify for the 400-IM.  San Diego State got both of their ranked swimmers into the final, so a slight boost depending on how those swimmers swim tonight.

In the 100-yard butterfly, San Diego State's title hopes received a blow when neither of their seeded swimmers (#5 and #8) qualified for tonight's final.  That's a loss of 25 points for the Aztec team, but both will score points in the "B" final tonight.

In the 200-freestyle, the reverse--Emily Irvin, seeded 7th, did not qualify for the final but she is in the "B" final tonight.  Thus, a loss of 6-7 points for the Broncos.

The 100-yard breaststroke went pretty much as planned--three Broncos and one SD State swimmer in the finals.

In the 100 backstroke, Sydney Johansen and Stephanie North, who both swam top-eight times this year, did not enter in the event.  That represents 26 points less for Boise State.

The summary of all this is that the team race between Boise State and San Diego State is now a dead heat.  Projections show a tie between the two teams.

Further Delay at Blue-Gray

Rain is continuing in Alabama.  Boise State's match with Auburn has now been pushed back again to 12:30 Mountain Time.

Heptathlon Scores Through Five Events

1.  Kurt Felix, Boise State 4,256 points
2.  Tibbs, Air Force 3,847
3.  York, New Mexico 3,813
4.  Douglass, Wyoming 3,734

Kurt Felix Takes Fourth in Heptathlon 60-Meter Hurdles

Kurt Felix didn't win an event in the heptathlon for the first time this week, but he did well enough (881 points for fourth place) to still own a commanding lead in the multi-event competition.  The pole vault and the 1,000-meter run are all that stand in the way of Kurt and a Mountain West Championship.

Broncos Swimming Well

Boise State did well in the opening preliminaries at the 2012 Mountain West Swimming & Diving Championships.  Will it be enough to take the Mountain West title?  We'll find out soon.

Christine Raininger, Chelsea Miller and Rachel Heaney all qualified for tonight's finals in the 400-yard IM.  Amber Boucher had the top qualifying time and Stevie Hughey both not only qualified for the finals in the 100 butterfly but also the NCAA's.

Stephanie North had the fastest 200-yard freestyle qualifying time (1:47.51) but no other Broncos and three San Diego State swimmers in tonight's finals there.

Emily Johansen, Emily Irvin and Heather Harper are all in tonight's 100-yard breaststroke finals.

Jessica Bottelberghe was the only Bronco qualifying for the final in the 100 backstroke.  Three SD State swimmers are in tonight's final.

Three Broncos Qualify in 100 Backstroke

My experience tells me that things have turned in the Mountain West Swimming Championships.  As I said last night, we'll know a lot by the end of the day.

In the first event, three Broncos (Sydney Johansen, who already has a gold so far, Emily Irvin and Heather Harper) qualified for the finals in the 100-yard backstroke.  One San Diego State swimmer is in the finals.

Another Busy Day for Bronco Sports

Today is another very busy day for Bronco fans.  In fact, I don't remember a weekend that was this busy.

The Broncos are trying to take their first-ever Mountain West Conference Championship.  They have three more chances.  The Boise State men's and women's teams are competing in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the MWC Indoor Track & Field Championships with a full slate of action.  The Broncs have a realistic chance of unseating defending champion San Diego State at the MWC Swimming & Diving Championships in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  Both of those conference championships take place through Saturday.

The Boise State tennis team faces three SEC teams this weekend at the Blue-Gray Classic in Montgomery, Alabama.  Rain is delaying the first matches, now rescheduled for 11:30 this morning Mountain Time.  The Bronco women play at Pepperdine this afternoon at 2:30.  The Boise State softball team, which split a doubleheader yesterday at the Cathedral Classic, plays nationally-ranked Oklahoma at 4:30 Mountain Time and Cal Poly at 7 p.m.  The #16 Bronco gymnasts test #8 Oregon State in Corvallis at 9 p.m.

Then we have both Boise State basketball teams in action tomorrow against Wyoming and the Bronco wrestling team hosts the Pac-12 Championships all day Sunday at Taco Bell Arena.

Hold on to your hats--it's going to be an exciting weekend and Blue Through and Through will keep you informed on all this right here!

Blue-Gray Tennis Matches Delayed in Montgomery

Boise State Softball Team Loses to Cal State Fullerton

The bats were exhausted in that late, late game for Boise State.  The Broncos lost to Cal State Fullerton 2-1.
