17 Broncos came to Austin in search of bigger things. 16 did not qualify for the NCAA Championships and Kurt Felix was feeling pretty lonely, about to be the only Boise State student-athlete at the Championships which start June 6.
In one of the final events of the West Regional Championships, Emma Bates broke the Boise State school record in the 5,000 meters by more than four seconds to finish 11th and reserve her spot in the National Championships. Bates ran the distance in 16:16.74 and will compete in two weeks. Felix automatically qualified in the Championships since he is ranked 4th in the nation in the decathlon, an event which is not contested at Regionals.
Way to go Emma! Congrats and best of luck!
