The Wyoming Cowgirls came into the Mountain West Conference volleyball opener with a sparkling 11-2 mark, but it was the homestanding Boise State Broncos that came away with the 25-22, 21-25, 25-16, 25-19 victory in Bronco Gym tonight.
Alyssa Gammel and Sierra Nobley combined for 34 kills, and Gammel's six service aces set a school record for a four-set match as Boise State improved to 8-5 overall.
With the match tied at one set apiece, Gammel stepped up by serving four consecutive points, including two aces, to stretch the Bronco lead to 16-7 in the third set. Gammel then opened the fourth set serving for seven straight points, including three aces. That 7-0 advantage proved to be insurmountable as the Broncos clinched the match with a 25-19 victory.
Gammel finished with 15 kills, one assist, 10 digs and one block to go with her six aces. Gammel is tied for seventh most all-time, but the other six achieved their marks in five sets. Nobley recorded a team-high 19 kills and hit 36 percent of her shots while racking up seven digs, two blocks and two aces. Maddy O'Donnell added nine kills while hitting 64.3%. O'Donnell entered the game ranked sixth in the nation at 48.5%. O'Donnell also had two aces and a team-high four blocks.
Sarah Baugh moved into fifth place all-time for career assists since 2001 with 51 tonight to give her 1,725 overall.
