The 10/20 Club

As promised, here's more information on the 10/20 Club, which I began keeping track of several years ago.  My data goes back to 1980, and the further you go, the tougher it is to verify records, especially in basketball.  But all of the following have been confirmed.

To achieve membership in the 10/20 Club, a school must win 10 or more regular-season games in football and 20 or more regular-season games in basketball in the same school year (fall to spring).  Post-season playoffs, bowls and tournaments do not count, which is what makes the 10/20 Club a significant achievement.  A conference championship in football, bowl games, and conference and other post-season basketball games merely add more games, making it easier to win 10 and 20 games, respectively.  But it dilutes the achievement and not only that, doesn't compare favorably to schools in the past that achieved the 10/20 Club without playing extra games.

Here is the complete list of The 10/20 Club since 1980:

Boise State Can Join The 10/20 Club For Third Time In History

OK, we can now start talking about this.  With one more win in basketball, Boise State can achieve the 10-20 Club for the third time in their history.  To reach this elite club, a school must win 10 or more regular-season games in football and 20 or more regular-season games in basketball.  Bowl games, playoffs and tournament games do not count, which is why it is such an outstanding achievement.

I'll have more on the 10-20 Club in the days to come if Boise State is able to get that 20th win.

Boise State Gymnasts #27

Way too many meets under 196 have send Boise State dropping like a rock in the NCAA National Gymnastics rankings.  Boise State was #16 the last two weeks and now is #27.

Boise State Inks Deal With Virginia To Play Football

In an amazing move, Boise State Athletic Director Mark Coyle announced today that the school has agreed to a home-and-home series with Virginia, currently with the Atlantic Coast Conference.  Boise State will travel in 2015, with the Cavaliers coming to Bronco Stadium in 2017.

Expect this to be just the first of many such announcements as ESPN will make it possible for such games in Bronco Stadium to occur.

Elorriaga Tied for 9th All-Time In Career Three-Pointers

Jeff Elorriaga's sharpshooting last night not only helped the Broncos score an important road win; it also moved Jeff up the ladder of the cream of the crop of Boise State long-range specialists.

Elorriaga nailed six three-pointers last night in Boise State's victory over Fresno State to give him 138 in his three-year career.  That ties Elorriaga with Anthony Thomas for ninth-place in the history of Boise State basketball.  Next up, a pair of legends that are tied for seventh:  Chris Childs and Roberto Bergersen--both hit 163 treys among the other outstanding things they accomplished in their careers.

Elorriaga now has connected on 71 three-pointers this season, which moves him past Coby Karl (2005-2006) and ties him with Bergersen (2008-2009) for seventh for the most three-pointers in a season at Boise State.  With a minimum of five games to play, Elorriaga has an outside shot at the school record of 92 set by Abe Jackson in 2001-02 and a realistic chance at tying Tyler Tiedeman (84 in 2007-08) for second.

Halftime score.  Not bad against the league's second-best team.  The hot shooting will have to continue.

Bronco Men Four Points Away From Air Force

Last year, Air Force won the Mountain West in the final event over Boise State.  This year, it's close again, but this time, the two teams are battling for second.  New Mexico has 152 points, 16 away from their projected 168.  Air Force has 122, while Boise State has 118.

Three events remain (3,000, triple jump and 4 x 400 relay).

Lady Broncos Lead UC Riverside 4-2 in 7th

Devon Bridges' two-run hit put the Broncos ahead and Boise State leads heading into the final inning.

The Run Holds Up--Boise State Wins 1-0

That's the nature of softball--you never know what's going to win the game for you.  Boise State's two hits in the fifth were the only two hits they would get the entire game, but it was enough to defeat homestanding San Diego 1-0.

Barnes' Single Drives in Bridges

Boise State has struck first in the top of the fifth.  After a leadoff single by Devon Bridges and a walk to Mackenzie White, Brittany McCray struck out, but Sarah Barnes came through with a single.  Broncos 1-0.

Boise State Softball Team Locked in Pitcher's Dual

Devon Bridges' single in the top of the fifth was Boise State's first hit of the game, which is scoreless between the Broncos and San Diego.

VanderMalle Takes Second

Highlights for the Bronco women's track team are hard to find, but Marissa VanderMalle finished second tonight in the 5,000-meter run.  Congrats to Marissa for getting it done!

Battle In Mountain West Track is for 2-3-4

New Mexico has a seven-point lead heading into the final day of the Mountain West Conference Track & Field Championships in Nampa, but the Lobos are well on schedule to dominate the event.

In preliminary top times yesterday in the running events and seeds for the field events, the Lobos are slated to finish with 168 points, which would easily outdistance the field.  Conversely, Wyoming, which is currently in fourth place, is on pace for 67 total team points, considerably lower than everyone else.

In between are Air Force, Boise State and Colorado State, which should battle it out for second, third and fourth.  Currently, the Broncos are projected to get 112 points to 109 for Air Force and 108 for Colorado State.  Of course, anything can still happen, and perhaps the home crowd can push the Broncos over the top.

Here is what Boise State must do to make up ground and win the championship:

1.  The Broncos will have to take care of business in the events they are expected to do well just to hold their projected position of second.  In the 400, Boise State is slated to score 25 points.  The quintet of Jordin Andrade (47.78), Manoah Wesson (48.68), Bret Scheve (49.06), Jeff Daw (49.26) and Paul Robertson (49.48) did their part in qualifying.  There are two Lobo student-athletes in the mix.  If everyone runs as they did in preliminaries, Boise State will score a little under projection.  The five Broncos mentioned above can do a lot for their team's chances if they can relegate the two New Mexico runners to the bottom, but they are both upperclassmen and it appears it will be tough to do that.

In the 60-meter hurdles, Rolando Trammel and Justin Malnes are seeded 2-4 for 12 team points.  New Mexico isn't much of a factor here, so Trammel and Malnes need to at least do that well tonight..  In the 200, Daveon Collins, Wesson and Robertson are projected to score 19 points to 8 for New Mexico.  Again, the Broncos will be doing well just to keep pace with that projection, but could pick up a few more points if they can finish ahead of the Lobo sprinter.  Chase Sexton and Will Lohman are projected to score 14 in the shot put, a 2-3 finish.

Obviously, there's not much room for improvement when you're already expected to do as well as those four events.  Realistically, there's only a net difference of 10 points either way in the three events.  But Boise State must at least score 70 points in those three events to have any chance at a team title.

2.  Boise State has to have someone step up and upset a Lobo in an unexpected event.  Head-to-head performance is the best chance to make a difference in a team championship but unfortunately, the events that New Mexico is best in are events in which Boise State has little chance, and vice versa.  Boise State will have to score about 28 points more than projection and New Mexico will have to score about 28 points less for the Broncos to win.  Admittedly, it's a tall order.

The three best events to make a dent are the 800, the mile and the high jump.  New Mexico is projected to score 22 in the 800.  Bryce Bergevin and Andy Robertson are Boise State's qualifiers in this event.  The Broncos' only real hope is for Bergevin and Robertson to turn the seeds upside down and go 1-2 in the 800 and dominate the Lobos, plus have Alexander Lindsay of Air Force finish ahead of the New Mexico runners.  That would be a plus 17 for Boise State and a minus 15 for New Mexico.

Drew O'donoghue McDonald and Jeff Howard are Boise State's best hopes in the mile, and will need to score heavily (at least 14 points) for the Broncos to have a chance at winning the Mountain West championship.  Boise State's other best chance to pick up points is in the high jump, where New Mexico is slated to score 14.  Roderick Townsend is projected to score one point here, and will need at least a second-place finish to give his team a chance.

Come on out to Jackson's Track and be the difference the Broncos need to win this thing.

Hughey Finishes 4th in 100 Butterfly

Stevie Hughey finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly tonight, but Boise State is getting blown out of the water.  The Broncos are second as a team, but trail San Diego State by a whopping 143 points.  I remember last year, a Bronco fan (no doubt a father of a student-athlete) got upset when I hinted that San Diego State would be close.  And now here they are dominating.
