In our previous story, we told you that Boise State has a chance to finish in the Top 40 of the Final Fall Standings of the Learfield Cup, given annually to the nation's #1 overall athletic program. The Learfield Cup awards points in all NCAA sports based on national finish.

The Final Fall Standings this year will be announced after the final Top 25 football poll, somewhere around January 10.

Here is the history of Boise State's performance in the Learfield measurement of fall sports:

1993-94: Unranked

1994-95: #50

1995-96: Unranked

1996-97: #73

1997-98: Unranked

1998-99: Unranked

1999-2000: Unranked

2000-01: Unranked

2001-02: Unranked

2002-03: #88

2003-04: #107

2004-05: #81

2005-06: Unranked

2006-07: #75

2007-08: #118

2008-09: #85

2009-10: #44

2010-11: #78

2011-12: #83

2012-13: #96

2013-14: #109

2014-15: #46

2015-16: #33

We've been telling you Boise State is having one of its best fall seasons in school history, and in the first Learfield Cup Standings, the Broncos are ranked #48. The standings represent just the men's and women's cross country championships and field hockey.

Boise State finished 19th in the men's competition to earn 55 points. With the recently completed NCAA Volleyball Tournament in which the Broncos reached the second round, Boise State will receive 25 points for that sport.

Additionally, the Bronco football team will score points. Boise State will receive 25 points for playing in a bowl game and 45 points if they receive votes in the final Top 25 poll. If they finish the season ranked in the Top 25, they will receive an increasing amount of points depending on which position they finish. A Top 25 finish should rank Boise State in the Top 40 in the nation in the final fall Learfield Cup Standings.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">STANFORD, CA--Boise State stopped a set point and went on to clinch the match in a 28-26, 25-22, 27-25 win over #20 Western Kentucky in the opening round of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament.

The Lady Broncos (26-6 this season), playing in their first-ever NCAA Tournament match, executed coach Shawn Garus' strategy to perfection despite being the underdog. Western Kentucky was the highest-ranked team to not host the first two rounds and came into the match with a 21-match winning streak and a season record of 30-2. The Hilltoppers had not lost in 2 1/2 months since a defeat to Michigan State. Western Kentucky was playing in its 10th tournament and sixth in the last seven years.

Down 22-24 in the third set, sophomore Kaitlyn Oliver blasted a shot over the net to save the set. A dunk by junior Sierra Nobley tied the match and junior setter Jaymee-lee Bulda's kill put the Broncos up 25-24. After the teams split the next two points, Maddy O'Donnell and Janell Walley set up a double block that was unanswered by WKU and the Broncos celebrated before a strong contingent of Bronco fans.

Boise State, which extended its own winning streak to 15 matches, will face the winner of the Stanford-Denver match tomorrow night at 7 Mountain time.

Despite the sweep, the two teams were fairly evenly matched, as never were they separated by more than five points in the entire match, and they played most of the three sets with less than two or three points separating them. After an even start in the opening set, O'Donnell scored two service aces to give Boise State their first lead at 11-19. Kills from Nobley put the Broncos up 18-16 and 21-19, and a block by sophomore Sabryn Roberts gave Boise State a 23-21 lead.

But WKU stormed back with three points and only an Oliver kill saved the set. Boise State came back to tie at 24 and a Nobley kill had the Broncos in position to win the set. Western Kentucky saved two set points before Roberts put away a winner to once again put Boise State ahead 27-26. O'Donnell did the honors for the Lady Broncos as they took the first set.

Nobley led Boise State with six kills in the set while Roberts had five and Oliver four. Alyssa Cavanaugh carried her team with eight kills. The Bronco block game was working to the tune of six to four for the Hilltoppers.

Service errors proved to be the difference in the opening set, with WKU committing four to zero for the Broncos.

Boise State spotted Western Kentucky a 1-3 lead but then led for most of the second set, opening up 14-9, 16-11 and 17-12 leads. With the Broncos ahead 20-17, Roberts beat a double block to put her team up 21-17, then scored another kill for a 22-18 lead. O'Donnell's smash put Boise State two points away with a 23-19 lead, and after the Toppers closed the lead to 24-22, Nobley's blast over the net gave Boise State a 2-0 lead in the match. Roberts had five kills in the set to lead the Bronco attack while Nobley had four.

Seven-time Conference USA Coach of the Year Travis Hudson (in his 22nd year at WKU) had the Hilltoppers fired up coming out of the locker room, determined to extend their season. WKU opened up a three point lead at 13-10, but Nobley, the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, scored a kill and then blocked Jessica Lewis' dunk attempt to close the margin to two. Nobley then tied the match with a block. Oliver's two straight terminating shots tied the match at 16, and the two teams played even volleyball for the next several points, setting up the Bronco heroics down the stretch.

Garus, with help from talented assistants Candy Murphy and Allison Buck, had their opponents scouted well and communicated to the Lady Broncos what they needed to do. Western Kentucky came into the match second in the nation in hitting percentage at 31.1%. The Toppers had a slight edge at 28.7% to 28.0% for the Broncos, but the fact that Boise State kept that statistic close went a long way in notching their first tournament win. WKU was never able to fully recover from the 4-0 deficit in service errors in the opening set, and finished with 10 errors to 7 for the Broncos.

Nobley led Boise State with 17 kills and 12 digs, including seven in the final set. Bulda, taking over this year from Sarah Baugh, one of the most accomplished setters in school history, was magnificent in dishing out 38 assists, while Vallivue High School product Maddi Osburn helped the Bronco defensive cause with 14 diggs.

Cavanaugh had 17 kills to lead Western Kentucky, while Lucas had 41 assists and Sydney Engle contributed 14 digs.
LARAMIE, WY--The Boise State volleyball team scored a 25-20, 25-18, 25-21 win last night over a tough Wyoming team to clinch a share of the Mountain West Conference championship and the school's first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament.

The Broncos (24-6, 15-2 in MW play) won their 13th straight match, 11 by sweep, repeating a theme from last season, Coach Shawn Garus' team won nine in a row and 15 of their last 16 to close the regular season last year.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this team and what they’ve accomplished this year,” said Garus. “The team was showing some nerves and a little anxiousness this afternoon, they know how good a team Wyoming is and how hard they are to beat at home. I thought we handle Wyoming’s pressure and the pressure of the circumstances of this match well. It was a battle with Wyoming, every time it looked like we had momentum in a set, they came back on us. Like many of the victories in this run, this was a team win with everyone contributing. Now we need to close it out Tuesday at home against Air Force.”

Junior Sierra Nobley once again paced the Lady Broncos with 19 kills. Her eight kills in the opening set helped Boise State rally from five points down to win.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">“The last two matches would not have been possible without the long hard off season and motivated summer workouts,” said Nobley. “Every single player on this team worked their tail off to be able to have such an incredible season, and winning the conference was icing on the cake. We’re so grateful for our coaches, trainers, weight coaches, and every person who was 100% invested in us, because we couldn’t have gotten this far without them. It’s so exciting to be a part of this program as we continue to climb higher than we ever have in the past. <span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">The second set featured seven ties and five lead changes with Nobley getting six more kills, aided by three each from senior Maddy O'Donnell and sophomore Kaitlyn Oliver. The Broncos finished with a 9-2 run to go ahead of the home team 2-0.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better way to end my senior year,” said O’Donnell. “Wyoming is a hard atmosphere to play in and we came in with complete confidence and rattled them from start to finish.

Maddi Osburn tallied a team-high 15 digs in the win to give her 515 on the season, second most in program history and six short of tying the school record of 521.

SAN DIEGO, California--For the second straight year, the Boise State volleyball team is surging down the stretch.

The Broncos topped San Diego State 25-19, 25-21, 14-25, 25-23 last night for their eighth consecutive win. Boise State improved their record to 19-6, 10-2 in Mountain West Conference play. Coach Shawn Garus' team, who is tied with UNLV for the league lead, owns a three-set victory over the Rebels last Saturday in Bronco Gym.

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Boise State has six matches remaining, including a home battle with defending champion Colorado State. With one more victory in those six matches, the Broncos can record their third consecutive 20-win season for the first time in 26 years. Boise State hasn't posted three straight 20-win seasons since Darlene Bailey's Bronco teams won 20 or more matches from 1986-90.

Junior Sierra Nobley (19 kills), sophomore Sabryn Roberts (12) and senior Maddy O'Donnell (10) paced the Bronco offense to victory.

Meanwhile, libero Maddi Osburn was spectacular in digging 11 off the court to keep the ball in play.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">“Nothing was easy tonight against a good San Diego State team that refused to quit,” said head coach Shawn Garus. “I thought we handle their pressure well, especially when they came back and won the third set. I thought Jaymee (Bulda) did a great job setting our outside hitters tonight who were huge for us. Sierra (Nobley) and Sabryn (Roberts) were great hitting it on the outside and caused the Aztecs issues defensively. I am just happy we got the win tonight and look forward to us caring this momentum on next week.”
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Trailing 3-0 in the opening set, the Broncos took command with an 8-2 run. Roberts pounded home the final two winners to give Boise State the lead.

BOISE, Idaho--An illegal forward pass by Colorado State allowed #15 Boise State to escape with a wild 28-23 win over the Rams in a rain-soaked Albertsons Stadium tonight. The Broncos advanced to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Mountain West Conference. <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">With a minimum of six games remaining in the 2016 season, Boise State tied the Florida teams from 1990-2009 and the Miami of Florida teams from 1985-2004 for the sixth-most wins in major college football history over any 21-year period. Boise State also has the 11th-most wins (204-57 since 1996) in major college football history over any 21-year period (see charts at conclusion of article.)

Through a series of improbable events, CSU came from a fourth quarter deficit of 28-3 to be in position to win the game until the mishap.

After Boise State's Thomas Sperbeck hit A.J. Richardson with a 11-yard pass in the end zone from the "Wildcat" formation, Colorado State drove 75 yards in 17 plays for its first touchdown, with Izzy Matthews pounding it in from two yards out with 5:04 left in the game. CSU converted three fourth downs to keep the drive alive.

The Rams then executed a perfect onside kick and struck quickly with a 53-yard toss from Nick Stevens to Michael Gallup on the next play to cut the lead to 28-17.

Colorado State once again recovered an onside kick when a hard boot hit Boise State's Chaz Anderson in the chest and bounced out. After moving the chains, the Rams struck deep into Bronco territory as they set up a screen formation over the middle to free Detrich Clark that went for 31 yards to the Boise State 11-yard line. Dalyn Dawkins easily ran through the middle of the Bronco line on the next play to narrow the margin to 28-23. A two-point conversion attempt failed.

When one succeeds twice, try, try again, yet this time, Boise State recovered the ensuing onside kick attempt.

Boise State converted one third-down attempt but were unable to convert on fourth-and-one at the CSU 27, allowing their opponent life with 21 seconds left. Stevens connected with Gallup, who ran out of bounds at the Ram 40 with 15 seconds remaining.

Stevens once again completed a short pass to Gallup, and the Rams executed three laterals before the ball went out of bounds with four ticks of the clock left.

Initially, the field officials ruled the play legitimate, but Boise State coach Bryan Harsin pointed out that the final lateral was an illegal forward pass, the penalty being a loss of down and a 10-second runoff of the clock, which would mean the game was over. The officials in the replay booth reviewed the play and agreed, ending the wild contest.

''That was a fight,'' Harsin said. ''There are certainly things to work on. It's hard to win every single week and come out prepared to win every single week. But I'm fired up for our team and how they handled some adversity. Certainly at the end of the game, there are a lot of things we can learn from and coach from.''

''We came in tonight to make it a fourth quarter game,'' Colorado State coach Mike Bobo said. ''It wasn't the kind of fourth quarter game we envisioned, but we did what we had to do to have a chance at the end.''

The vaunted Bronco offense was stymied for nearly the entire first half until Boise State quarterback Brett Rypien spotted Sperbeck open in the end zone for a 12-yard completion with 27 seconds remaining. That big play gave the Broncos a 7-3 halftime lead after the Rams became the first team to lead Boise State this season after a Wyatt Bryan 39-yard field goal with 7:24 left in the first quarter. Until that time, Boise State was the only major college football team this year to never trail in a game.

On the opening drive of the second half, the Broncos executed a methodical 10-play, 79-yard drive to extend that lead to 14-3, with Jeremy McNichols carrying it into the end zone for a five-yard score.

Boise State forced a Ram punt to take over on their own 17 and McNichols had a three-yard gain on first down. McNichols then burst through the middle untouched for an 80-yard run to quickly give the Broncos a 21-3 lead that was increased to 28-3 with the Sperbeck-to-Richardson touchdown pass. McNichols now has three runs of 80 or more yards in his Bronco career.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">''We called the play earlier in the game and I almost broke that one,'' said McNichols<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">, who rushed for a career-high 217 yards (eighth-highest in school history) and two touchdowns. ''So when coach asked me what play to call, I told him we needed to call it again. And he called it.'' McNichols, the nation's fifth-best running back with 129.2 yards per game, surpassed the second 200-yard mark for the second time this season after running for 208 yards against Oregon State. It was the 19th time that a Bronco running back has reached 200 or more rushing yards in a game.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">McNichols now has three games of 200 or more yards, equaling the career mark of his predecessor, <a class="scout-wire-card" data-key="11775252" data-mce-href="http://www.scout.com/player/144237-jay-ajayi" data-type="Player" href="http://www.scout.com/player/144237-jay-ajayi" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">Jay Ajayi<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">, now a star with the <a data-key="92" data-mce-href="http://www.scout.com/nfl/dolphins" data-type="Team" href="http://www.scout.com/nfl/dolphins" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">Miami Dolphins<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">. <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"> Only Cedric Minter (1977-80) has more 200-yard rushing games at Boise State with four.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">The Boise State junior tied Jared Zabransky (2003-6) for ninth in career rushing TD's with 31. Zabransky was named a pre-game honorary captain along with linebacker Korey Hall as the Bronco crowd honored the famous 2006 Boise State team that capped an undefeated season with a historic 43-42 win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">

McNichols<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"> also had a career-high and school record 40 carries and, with four catches for 47 yards, accumulated a career-high 264 total yards to lead the Broncos. McNichols achieved 200 or more all-purpose yards for the fifth time, behind only Brock Forsey (8 from 1999-2002) and Ajayi (6 from 2012-14).

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">Jeremy passed former Broncos David Mikell (2000-03) and Jon Francis (1984-85) and is now 10th in Boise State history for career rushing yards with 2,271. <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">McNichols passed <a class="scout-wire-card" data-key="10198747" data-mce-href="http://www.scout.com/player/85270-doug-martin" data-type="Player" href="http://www.scout.com/player/85270-doug-martin" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">Doug Martin<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">, now a star running back with the <a data-key="117" data-mce-href="http://www.scout.com/nfl/buccaneers" data-type="Team" href="http://www.scout.com/nfl/buccaneers" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">Tampa Bay Buccaneers<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">, with his fifth career game over 150 yards, and is ninth all-time in career 100-yard rushing games.
BOISE, ID--Jeremy McNichols rang up 226 all-purpose yards as #24 Boise State scored an ugly 21-10 Mountain West Conference win over Utah State last night before 36,602 fans in Albertsons Stadium.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Boise State now has a record of 190-35 since 1999 and is two wins shy of tying <a data-key="665" data-mce-href="http://www.scout.com/college/nebraska" data-type="Team" href="http://www.scout.com/college/nebraska" style="background-color: white; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">Nebraska<span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">'s modern record for the most victories in an 18-year period. The Cornhuskers compiled a record of 192-31-1 from 1982-1999 (see chart at conclusion of article.)

McNichols gained 132 yards on the ground and added 94 yards in receiving including hauling in a 61-yard TD reception. Wide receiver Cedrick Wilson, who threw the touchdown pass to McNichols on a double-pass, also caught a 36-yard scoring strike from quarterback Brett Rypien. <span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;"> McNichols passed Jeremy Avery (790 from 2007-10) and Jay Ajayi <span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">(771 from 2012-14) for the second-most career receiving yards by a running back at Boise State. McNichols now has 831 and is behind only Brock Forsey (1,050 from 1999-2002) in that category.

Boise State (4-0 overall and 1-0) had revenge on their minds after suffering a 52-26 loss at Utah State last season. But they led by just 7-3 at halftime and only Rypien's two TD passes in the second half and a dazzling defensive performance gave them the victory.
The trickery from Wilson to McNichols was the only touchdown in the opening half and McNichols gained most of his yards in the fourth quarter to keep the ball out of the hands of the Aggie offense.

Last season, Utah State (2-3, 0-2) relied on eight Bronco turnovers. This time, an Akilian Butler fumble on a punt return shortly before halftime was Boise State's only miscue that gave the Aggies the ball at the Bronco 25. The Boise State defense rose to the occasion after that change of possession, forcing a 32-yard field goal attempt from Brock Warren that was wide left on the final play of the half.

The Aggies missed leading rusher Devante Mays, who is out with an injury to his right knee. Without Mays, USU was unable to mount a sustained ground game and Bronco defenders harassed Aggie quarterback Kent Myers constantly. Utah State scored on a 28-yard Warren field goal earlier in the second quarter and a TD mass from Myers to Andrew Rodriguez with 7:41 remaining in the game.

The Boise State defense held Utah State below its season average of 26.2 points per game and allowed just one drive of over four plays in the opening half. <span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Nose tackle David Moa <span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">posted multliple sacks for the third straight game, credited with 1.5 in tonight's win. Moa now has 5.5 in the last three games. Senior defensive end Sam McCaskill also had 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles-for-loss for the Broncos.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Boise State held Utah State to 71 yards rushing, and in four games are allowing opponents 72 yards per game on the ground.
The Bronco offense, meanwhile, converted eight-of-16 third-down opportunities, improving in an area of concern in their win over Oregon State last week. That improvement wasn't matched by the Boise State punt return game, which netted just two yards on nine Aggie punts.

Boise State punter Sean Wale, however, continued his strong 2016 campaign that has led to Wale being named to the watch list for the William K. Campbell Trophy, an award given annually to the nation's top collegiate punter. Wale boomed seven punts for 306 yards (43.7 average) that included four punts inside the USU 20 and two inside the Aggie 10.

McNichols now has an even 2,000 career rushing yards and passed Lee Marks (1,889 from 2002-2005) for 13th place on the Bronco all-time list. McNichol's recorded his 10th career game of 100 or more yards, tying D.J. Harper (2007-2012) and Chris Jackson (1986-87). Jeremy's Boise State and Mountain West streak of a Boise State and Mountain West record 15 consecutive games with a rushing touchdown, however, came to an end.

McNichols had six receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown while Thomas Sperbeck hauled in five passes for 64 yards <span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">and a highlight reel five-yard TD reception in which he soared high above his Aggie receiver to come down with the ball in the end zone.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Sperbeck passed Bronco legends Ryan Ikebe (2,751 career receiving yards from 1993-96) and the recently departed Don Hutt (2,728 from 1970-73) for fourth place all-time at Boise State. With 2,770 career yards, Sperbeck trails school record holder Titus Young by 293. Sperbeck, with 162 career receptions, passed Mike Wilson (159 from 1990-93) and is now tied with Ryan Ikebe (1993-96) for seventh.

Rypien finished 15-24 for 163 yards and two touchdowns and passed Mike Virden (1989-90) for 10th place in career passing yards at Boise State. The sophomore signal-caller has 4,377 yards in 2015 and the four games this fall. <span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Rypien, now with 4,296 yards of total offense in his career, passed running back Ian Johnson (4,183 from 2005-2008) for 13th.

Given the pressure Myers was facing, USU head coach Matt Wells began having Myers roll out of the pocket more often in the second half, giving him the opportunity to spot open receivers for big gains. Myers completed 29-of-50 passes for 287 yards and wound up being the team's leading rusher with 47 yards<span style="background-color: white; color: #202020; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">, including a season-high 45 yard scamper on the opening play of the second half.

True freshman Rayshad Lewis led Utah State with career bests of seven catches for 82 yards while Rodriguez had six for 89.

Boise State can now check off one task on its quest to avenge four losses last season. The Broncos will get another opportunity next Saturday in New Mexico, going against a Lobo team that embarrassed Boise State 31-24 on its Blue Turf last year.

Notes:

Redshirt freshman John Molchon started at right tackle for the Broncos, his first-career start. Senior Steven Baggett started his 22nd-consecutive game, but the first of his career at center. Baggett has started 16 games at right guard, five at right tackle and now one at center.****************************************
BOISE, ID--Sierra Nobley and Sabryn Roberts led the Boise State volleyball team to a 25-19, 25-23, 25-16 win over San Diego State last night to extend the Broncos' home winning streak to 10.

Nobley had 13 kills and is now six kills shy of the 1,200-mark for her career. Roberts added 11 and led the Lady Broncos with a 47.6% hitting percentage.

“Sabryn loves playing at home,” Boise State head coach Shawn Garus said. “She played great. It wasn’t just her hitting. She blocked well and was a really scrappy player. She’s really maturing to someone we can count on night in and night out.”

After the Aztecs tied the opening set at 10, a Roberts kill spurred a Bronco rally of five unanswered points and a Nobley kill won the opening set.

San Diego State was more aggressive in the second set to open up a 15-11 lead. The Aztecs were in a position to win the set with a 23-21 lead but a Roberts kill and three consecutive attack errors by the visitors gave Boise State the win.

After Boise State took the lead 6-5 in the third set, they cruised to take the set and the match.

“It was big to win in our conference home opener,” Garus said. “We split last weekend on the road against two very good teams. If you can split on the road consistently and hold at home, you’re going to finish in the top of the conference and probably have a chance to win down the stretch.”

Boise State advanced its record to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in Mountain West Conference play.

Senior Maddy O'Donnell moved into 11th place all-time with six blocks and now has 313 in her career.

Boise State hosts Nevada Saturday at 2 p.m. in Bronco Gym prior to the football game with Utah State. Nevada comes into the battle with a record of 10-4 and 1-1 in MW action.

Fans who present their football ticket will receive free admission to the volleyball match.

CORVALLIS, OR--Jeremy McNichols ran for a career-high 208 yards (11th-highest total in Bronco history) and three touchdowns and caught a TD pass as Boise State survived a lackluster second half to down Oregon State 38-24 this afternoon. <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">It was the Broncos' fifth consecutive win over a Pac-12 opponent (Boise State is 10-3 vs. the Pac-12 since 2006) but its first-ever win in Corvallis in four tries.

After heading into the locker room ahead 31-7, the Boise State team may have thought they had an easy win. Oh so wrong.

Oregon State head coach Gary Anderson fired up his team at halftime, sent a walk-on quarterback who joined the team June 28 into the game and then ordered a nifty onside kick to completely turn the game around and put a serious scare into Bronco fans.

Had it not been for linebacker Darren Lee's alert strip of wide receiver Seth Collins and 19-yard touchdown return late in the game, this one could have gotten much more interesting. With less than four minutes remaining and Oregon State on its own 17 behind 31-17, Lee wrestled the ball away from Collins after a completion and headed into the end zone for Boise State's only highlight of the second half.

Victor Bolden, Jr. took the ensuing kickoff, however, and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown. It didn't help that the umpire on the play completely screened Boise State's Raymond Ford from making the touchdown-saving tackle.

After the Beaver onside kick failed, McNichols revived a Bronco offense that totaled just 5 yards in the first 21 minutes of the second half. With 3:21 left in the game, McNichols plowed through the OSU defense for 43 yards on five carries to salt away the game, and the Broncos ran out the clock.

Boise State opened the game by marching 75 yards into the end zone, helped by a 28-yard run by Akilian Butler on a double reverse and a 16-yard dash by McNichols off the Broncos' famous Statue of Liberty play. McNichols carried it in five yards for the 7-0 lead.

A kickoff return gave the Beavers the ball on the Bronco 41, and with the help of a 15-yard personal foul penalty on Boise State, OSU answered with Ryan Nall taking it in for a 14-yard run to tie the score.

Three possessions later, the Broncos moved it 73 yards for a score, with McNichols finding the end zone again from six yards out, and the Broncos led 14-7.

The Boise State defense stiffened, and Rypien led the Broncos on an 11-play, 90-yard drive, firing complete to Thomas Sperbeck for 26 yards, Chaz Anderson for 20 and Sperbeck again for 13. Three plays later, Rypien found McNichols in the right flank, and McNichols sprinted towards the sideline, diving and reaching the ball for the pylon and a 21-7 Boise State lead.

The Bronco defense held again, leading to a 70-yard touchdown by McNichols and a 21-point Bronco advantage.

Boise State drove the ball 80 yards on its next possession with 31 and 27-yard pass plays from Rypien to Sperbeck highlighting the drive. Tyler Rausa booted a 29-yard field goal as time ran out in the half.

It was total domination in the first half by a Bronco team that showed what it was capable of. They had churned out 435 yards of total offense to just 57 for Oregon State in the stanza.

But Anderson chewed out his team at halftime and the Beaver team that came out in the second half was not the one responsible for those first half statistics. And the OSU fortunes now rested on walk-on signal-caller Conor Blount. Blount, who initially committed to walk on at Wisconsin and then changed his mind in May, came to Oregon State in June.

After a change of possessions, Boise State had the Beavers pinned down on their own 5. But a suddenly-inspired OSU offensive line opened holes for the Beaver ground game that simply weren't there in the game's first 30 minutes. Blount led the Beavers on a 14-play drive to make the score Boise State 31, Oregon State 14.

Anderson further fired up his team and the home crowd by electing to have placekicker Adley Rutschman tap the ball on the kickoff, running with it as it tumbled downfield. The shocked Broncos watched from their side as Rutschman fell on the ball after it traveled the required 10 yards.

The Beavers advanced the ball to the Bronco 23, but were forced to send Garrett Owens in to kick a 41-yard field goal to make it 31-17.

But the suddenly cold Boise State offense generated successive drives of just five yards, a negative three and zero to keep the Beavers in the game.

Luckily for the Broncos, the Boise State defense held its ground as well and with 9:11 left, the Bronco offense finally got untracked, gaining 40 yards before having to punt it.

Wales got off a beauty, pinning Oregon State back on its 4 after a Beaver block in the back penalty. Blount hit Seth Collins with a first down to the OSU 17 on first down, but after the completion to Collins on second down, Lee alertly stripped the ball and was headed to the end zone.

It was the second consecutive game in which Boise State opened up a big lead on a Pac-12 opponent and let them back into the game. The Broncos grabbed a 31-14 lead over Washington State two weeks ago only to hang on by their fingernails for a 31-28 victory.

McNichols' career- day allowed him to pass David Hughes (1,826 yards from 1977-1980), Chris Jackson (1,805 in 1986-87) and Eron Hurley (1,697 from 1995-98) for 14th place in career rushing at Boise State. McNichols now has 1,868 in two years and three games and is 21 behind Lee Marks (2002-05) for 13th.

McNichols is now tied for current Tampa Bay starting running back Doug Martin for fifth in 150-yard rushing games with five. McNichols, who also caught four passes for 26 yards and a touchdown, moved into a tie for seventh all-time with his third game of 200 or more all-purpose yard<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">s. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">He extended his Mountain West Conference record streak of rushing for a touchdown in 15 straight games.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Sperbeck tied Mike Holton (1972, 1974-1976) and Don Hutt (1970-1973) for second place with his 11th career 100-yard receiving game.

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Rypien was accurate on 19-of-36 passes for 215 yards and a score and passed former Bronco great Eric Guthrie (1968-1971) for 11th place on the career passing yardage list (see tables at conclusion of this article.) Rypien tied Jim McMillan (1971-1974) for seventh in 200+ passing games and also vaulted from 13th to 9th in the Boise State record book for career completions. Sperbeck led the Broncos with six receptions for 104 yards.
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Boise State continued its streak of perfect journeys into the red zone--the Broncos have now scored on 11 of 11 trips in 2016 with eight touchdowns.
MINNEAPOLIS, MN--Boise State sophomore Brenna Peloquin dominated the field to win the 6K women's cross country race at the Roy Griak Invitational this afternoon. Peloquin surged from the start into a pack of 10 runners and gained from there. By two kilometers, she was second behind senior Michigan All-American Erin Finn. Those two runners opened up a 100-yard lead on the third place runner with the rest of the field far back. With about one kilometer remaining, Peloquin made her move and ran away from Finn, extending her lead to 30 yards and crossing the finish line 13 seconds ahead of Finn to take the individual title. Peloquin was 27th in this race one year ago.

Finn, the Big Ten Champion in both 2013 and 2015, won the '15 Big Ten Championship by 45 seconds, but today, she was no match for Peloquin.
