Boise State Swimmers Should Regain Lead Tomorrow

There are six finals tomorrow in the Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  The Broncos are strong in all six and should regain the lead from San Diego State.

Currently, the Aztecs lead with 299 points to 295 for Boise State.  The six finals are in the 200 freestyle relay (Boise State is the #2 seed), the 200-yard freestyle, the 400 IM, the 100-yard butterfly, the 100 breaststroke and the 100 backstroke.  San Diego State is still projected at this point to take the team title, but here is why Boise State should grab the lead tomorrow:

In the relay, Boise State is projected second to fourth for San Diego State.  Boise State should score heavily in the 100-yard breaststroke with 47 points to 24 for San Diego State.  Boise State should also get 40 in the 100 backstroke to 27 for the Aztecs.  Three events in particular will be key to both teams' title hopes and watch them closely:

100 butterfly--both teams are strong with Boise State projected to get 42 points and SD State 37.
400 IM--both teams are strong here--the Broncos are slated to get 42 points to 35 for SD State.
The 200 free is indeed a free-for-all between these two teams.  Boise State is projected to get 55 points while San Diego State is projected to get 50.

Any substantial gain or loss from the above will be huge in the team race.  Boise State has made up 69 points of the projected 61-point deficit in two days of the competition, meaning that if everything goes as scheduled, the Broncos will win by eight points.  I have a feeling that given those head-to-head matchups listed above, we will know a lot tomorrow if Boise State can get its first-ever Mountain West Championship in any sport.

With today's results and tomorrow's projections, here are what should be the standings Friday night if both teams do as expected:

1.  Boise State 555
2.  San Diego State 502
