Analysis of Second Day of 2012 MWC Swimming & Diving Championships

Today was expected to be a good day for San Diego State and it was.  But Boise State had a great day as well, winning the 400 medley relay, Sydney Johansen coming up big in the 200 IM, and the Broncos powering through the 50-yard freestyle.  Here was the score yesterday with projected scores shown:

1.  Boise State 108 points    (96 projected)  + 12
2.  San Diego State 101  (104 projected)  -3
3.  UNLV 78 points   (75 projected )  +3

In today's five finals, San Diego State scored 198 points, but Boise State scored 187 points.  Coming in, it shouldn't have been close, but the fact that the Broncos nearly matched the Aztecs point for point is very important.  SD State swam in their best event, the 500-free, but came away with 73 points instead of 77.  The Broncos added 14 points to projected total in the 50-free and also got the upset win in the medley relay.  Boise State also scored 13 more points than expected in the 200 IM and picked up 9 points in the three-meter diving.

Here are the results from Day 2:

1.  San Diego State 198 (219 projected points) -21
2.  Boise State 187 (154 projected points)  +33
3.  UNLV  132 (130 projected)  +2

So the Team Scores after two days are as follows:

1.  San Diego State 299 points (275 projected)  -24
2.  Boise State 295 (250 projected)  +45
3.  UNLV 210
4.  New Mexico 185
5.  Wyoming 176
6.  Colorado State 121
7.  TCU 118
8.  Air Force 79

If everything goes as projected, Boise State will now win the MWC by 8 points.  Obviously, it's too close to call at this point.
