Austin Hamilton gave it a good run, but finished 17th tonight at the NCAA Western Region Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.  Hamilton was seventh with just one flight remaining, but 10 of those javelin throwers posted a better mark.

Boise State's Fernando Martinez, the #8 seed in the 400-meter hurdles, failed to qualify for the Finals Saturday.  Martinez was 40th--not a misprint.

Fourteen Broncos Will Compete In 16 Events at the NCAA Regional Track & Field Championships

They say strength comes in numbers.

If that's true, Boise State should make send a strong showing to the NCAA National Championships.  No less than seven Broncos have Top-12 marks in their respective events; a finish in the Top 12 next weekend is required to advance to Nationals.

There are 48 competitors in each event at both the Eastern and Western Regionals, meaning 24 will earn the right to punch their ticket to the National Championships.

Junior Emma Bates is ranked #1 in the 10,000 and #4 in the 5,000, and she'll be hoping to earn her third straight berth to the NCAA Championships.  Bates earned All-America honors in both events last year.

Marisa Howard has been coming on strong and figures to be another qualifier.  Howard is ranked fourth in the steeplechase with a school record 10:00.80.

Hayli Bozarth has a solid shot to advance in the hammer (ranked fifth), and she might sneak in for the shot put as well.  Bozarth set school records in both, and is ranked 18th in the Region in the shot.

Zach Wiles and Allan Schroeder both qualified in the men's steeple, where Wiles is ranked fifth in the region (8:45.95) and Schroeder is seventh (8:47.56).  Teammates can help each other out immensely in elite events such as this.

Fernando Martinez won the Mountain West Conference title in the 400-meter hurdles, and he ranks #8 in the Region, while Rex Stanley is 48th in the event.

Back-to-back men's hammer champ Matt Post will compete next weekend as the #10 seed.  Post finished 18th at the National Championships last year.

Austin Hamilton will test the competition in the javelin as the #19 thrower after finishing second at the MW Championships last weekend.

Jasmyn Jewett is ranked 24th in the women's triple jump, David Elliott is ranked 29th in the men's 5,000 meters and Jordan Ward comes in 30th in the women's high jump.  Tessa Murray is ranked 37th in the women's 5,000, and hopefully she can keep up with teammate Bates.  Senior Jeff Howard is 40th in the men's 10,000.
