The new-look Boise State gymnastics team opened the season with a superior effort, downing #16 Washington 194.40 to 193.425 in Taco Bell Arena last Friday night.
Coming off a year in which they missed qualifying for Nationals by less than a quarter of a point, Boise State will feature nine freshmen this season, with 16 of their 24 routines coming from underclassmen. That the Broncos can lose so many stars from last year's team and still perform this well in the season opener is a tribute to Bronco coaches Neil Resnick and Tina Bird.
"We are happy with our score for being an opening meet and the mistakes we made tonight are easily in our control to fix," said co-head coach Bird. "We are really proud of how the team did tonight, especially the freshmen."

Freshman Ciera Perkins won bars with a score of 9.90 and also scored on vault and floor. Fellow freshman Kelsey Morris finished third on bars while another frosh, Caitlin Mann, was third on floor.

Senior Lindsay Kazandjian (9.825) finished second on bars while Morris rang up a 9.80 to finish third. Hailey Gaspar (9.775) heled Boise State to a 48.125 on beam, leaving the Broncos just one event from pulling off a big win.
Gaspar scored a 9.775 to finish second on floor exercises as Boise State brought it hope with a 48.275.
Lauren Rogers led Washington with the all-around title (38.95) and a win on vault (9.875). Megan Whitney captured the beam prize with a 9.80 and McKenzie Fechter scored 9.825 to take first on the floor.
Boise State meets Sacramento State next Friday, January 20 in the Beauty and the Beast meet. The Bronco wrestlers will take on North Dakota State in the popular promotion in Taco Bell Arena.
