Bronco hammer thrower Matt Post is about to begin at the NCAA National Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene.  He has a hard act to follow, as yesterday Emma Bates placed third in the women's 10,000.

The first Field Series of 14 competitors has completed each of their first three throws, and now Post and the other 13 in the second field are set.  The Top 12 advance to finals.  Here are the marks Post needs to beat:

Boise State's Emma Bates Finishes 3rd in the Nation

Bronco sophomore Emma Bates took third place in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene.  The third-place finish is one of the highest ever for a Boise State student-athlete and the second-best for a female Bronco.  Elena Kafourou won the long jump in 2009.

Bates (33:37.13), stayed in the Top 10 for most of the race and topped Washington's Megan Goethals, who finished in 33:40.85.  Emma shattered her own school record by nearly 13 seconds and earning her All-America status after getting the nod on two second-team All-America units previously.  Bates will also run in the 5,000 later in the week, an event in which she is ranked #9.

It won't hold up without more points, of course, but Boise State is tied for 11th with 6 team points.  It should be noted that the Broncos finished 19th in the nation in 2009 when Kafourou won her national title, the best finish in school history for the Bronco women.  Besides Bates' 5,000, Marissa VanderMalle will run in the steeplechase semifinal this afternoon.  She is also ranked ninth in the country.

Ajayi Named 2013 Bronco Freshman of the Year

Running back Jay Ajayi was overwhelmingly supported as the 2013 Bronco Freshman of the Year, receiving  40.98% of the vote in a BroncoCountry poll.  Freshman tennis phenom Thomas Tenreiro, who won his final 18 matches to lead the Broncos into the NCAA Tournament, was second with 18.85%.  All ten nominees, plus Shane Williams-Rhodes, received votes in the poll.

Defensive back Darian Thompson was third with 14 votes, with basketball's Mikey Thompson right behind with 13.

Congratulations to Jay--keep focused and give Bronco fans another three years as good as the last one!

Mountain West Postseason Basketball Tournament Format Announced

With 11 men's and 11 women's basketball teams next season, the Mountain West had to come out with a new formula for the conference tournament.  They have done that and it's easy to understand.

All you need to know is that the bottom six seeds in each sex will face off in the opening round.  The three winners which emerge will join the top five seeds in the quarterfinals, and then the rest of the tournament proceeds as usual.

Patton Inducted into Idaho Tennis Hall of Fame

Greg Patton, one of the instrumental figures on the national tennis scene over the last 30 years, was inducted into the Idaho Tennis Association Hall of Fame last month.

Patton, who has coached Boise State to a 380-145 record and 10 conference championships, has an overall record of 731-338 in his 32 years as a collegiate head tennis coach.  Eleven times, Patton has been named a conference coach of the year and he was the 1997 NCAA Coach of the Year when he led the Broncos to a Top 5 ranking and quarterfinal finish in the NCAA Championships.

Patton coached the United States Boys' National Team from 1998-2003 and the U.S. Collegiate National Team from 2009-2012.  

2013 Bronco Freshman of the Year

We began this category last year because freshmen are beginning to be "impact players" for Boise State in several sports.  This year, there are no less than 10 deserving student-athletes in this category:

Jay Ajayi (football) rushed 84 times for 548 yards and four touchdowns last season.  His 6.7 yards-per-carry average broke John Smith's 40-year-old record of 6.57.  

Holden Huff (football) stepped up when Gabe Linehan was injured and caught 17 passes for 250 yards (14.7 average) and four touchdowns.

Maddie Krentz (gymnastics) was fifth in floor exercises and bars against Southern Utah with scores of 9.80 and 9.875, respectively.  She then scored 9.825 on bars, good for 10th at the Western Athletic Championships, as she helped Boise State capture the team title.  Krentz was honored as the WAC Freshman of the Year.

Devin Madsen (swimming & diving) was second in both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstrokes against #13 Arizona, and won both backstroke events against BYU.  She was third in the 200-yard backstroke at the Missouri Invitational.  Madsen helped the Boise State 200-yard medley relay team set a school record and set an individual mark of 1:57.56 in the 200-yard backstroke to finish fifth at the Mountain West Conference Championships.  Madsen was also sixth in the 100-yard backstroke.

Samantha Martin (women's golf) had six Top 25 finishes this season, which already ranks seventh in school history.  She finished ninth at the Mountain West Championships, helping Boise State to a second-place finish.

Thomas Tenreiro (tennis) finished the season with a 23-3 record, and won his last 18 matches in a row.  Thomas's play was a key reason Boise State won the Mountain West Conference and fought #23 Clemson to the wire in the opening match of the NCAA Tournament before falling 4-3.

Darian Thompson (football) was credited with 28 solo tackles and 43 overall, and picked off three passes for 19 yards, recovered a fumble, and had six pass deflections.

Mikey Thompson (basketball) averaged 7.9 points per game for the Broncos.  He hit 83-216 of his field goal tries (38.4%), was second on the Broncos with 25-57 shooting from three-point land, and connected on 47 of 67 free throws (70.1%).  Thompson also averaged 2.4 rebounds per game, had 41 assists and 17 steals as Boise State finished tied for fourth in the tough Mountain West Conference and earned its first at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Makenna Weir softball) had 42 hits in 142 at bats this season, including 11 doubles and four home runs.  She batted .296 on the season and drove in 31.

Sam Wicks (swimming & diving) won the 50-yard freestyle against Denver and the 100-yard backstroke against Wyoming and helped the 200-yard medley relay team win against BYU.  Wicks anchored the record-breaking 200-yard medley relay team and set an individual school record when she swam the 100-yard backstroke in 53.93 to finish fifth at the Mountain West Conference Championships.

Bronco Coach of the Year--2013

Our annual poll for Bronco Coach of the Year showcases four coaches who won conference championships (Bird & Resnick are co-coaches), three coaches who led their team to Top 25 finishes, and four coaches who guided their troops to the NCAA postseason.

Bird & Resnick helped the Bronco gymnasts to an upset win in the WAC Championships over #13 Denver.  Caitlin Mann and Kelsey Black both made the All-WAC team in all-around, Black was also all-conference in the vault and floor, Mann was honored on beam and Kelsey Morris was All-WAC on bars.  Mann was named WAC Gymnast of the Year, Maddie Krentz of Boise State was Freshman of the Year and Bird and Resnick were awarded WAC Coaches of the Year.  Boise State was ranked in the Top 20 most of the year and finished #23.

Coach Patton led Boise State to its second straight Mountain West tennis championship and automatic berth in the NCAA Championships.  Andy Bettles was named MWC Player of the Year.  Bettles was All-Mountain West in both singles and doubles (with partner Nathan Sereke).  The Broncos shocked both #22 Notre Dame and Texas Tech to win the Blue-Gray Tennis Championship, and Boise State battled #23 Clemson before falling in the NCAA Championships, 4-3.  Boise State finished the season ranked #42.  Bettles finished the year ranked #40 in singles and will compete in the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship.

Chris Petersen led the football team to an 11-2 record, with the two losses consisting of a combined six points.  Boise State won the Mountain West Conference, then edged Washington 28-26 to win the Las Vegas Bowl.  Boise State finished the season #14 in the USA Today Coaches' Poll and #18 in the AP.  Center Matt Paradis, defensive linemen Mike Atkinson and DeMarcus Lawrence, linebacker J.C. Percy and cornerback Jamar Taylor were named All-Mountain West.

Greg Randall led Boise State to a second-place finish in the Pac-12 and Jake Swartz Jason Chamberlain captured individual PAC-12 titles.  Three Broncos (Chamberlain, George Ivanov and J.T. Felix) advanced to the national quarterfinals at the NCAA Tournament and Chamberlain wrestled for the national championship before finishing second.  Boise State finished 19th in the Team Standings.

Leon Rice led the Boise State basketball team to a 21-11 record this season, including a win over nationally-ranked Creighton as Boise State tied for fourth in the Mountain West.  Boise State earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in its history before losing to LaSalle in the opening round.

The winner, with 138 votes--Coach Rice is the 2013 Bronco Coach of the Year.  Coach Petersen garnered 19.25% while Coach Patton had 3.74%, the team of Neil Resnick and Tina Bird had 2.67% and Coach Randall received one vote.

Just to recap the late results...

Boise State finished 21st in the women's 4 x 100-meter relay, clocked at 45.21.

Daveon Collins wasn't going to have any of that 21st place stuff--he was 10th in the 200, turning in a 20.87 time, to advance to the National Championships.

But give it up for Emma Bates!  The blossoming Bronco sophomore, who already qualified for Nationals in the 10,000, was amazing on this night.  Emma ran the 5,000 in 16:04.03, which was 4th out of the 48 best collegiate women in the West.  She not only will compete in two events at Nationals, but she showed she had the stuff to be amongst the leaders in the 5,000.  Tessa Murray was not ale to keep pace and finished 32nd with a time of 16:56.16.

David Elliott was 28th in the men's 5,000' crossing the finish line in 14:34.54.  The Boise State 4x 400-meter relay team was just a little shy, placing 18th tonight (3:10.97).

Post Moves On To Nationals

So far, this has been a pretty good Regional for the Boise State track team, though they need four to five more National qualifiers before we start talking great.  The schol record occurred in 2007, when nine Bronco student-athletes competed at Nationals in 10 events.

Matt Post threw the hammer 208-feet 11-inches to place 10th today in Austin.  Post joins Emma Bates and Marissa VanderMalle to move on.  The event was supposed to be occluded yesterday but poor Texas weather forced the spillover into today.

VanderMalle Is Going To Nationals

Marisa VanderMalle qualified for the NCAA National Championships by knocking a full 24 seconds off her existing school record in the steeplechase today at the Western Regional in Austin, Texas.  The weather was so bad the competition was delayed seven hours.   VanderMalle was 10th in qualifying with a time of 10:01.12.

Daveon Collins qualified for the quarters in the 200 when he was clocked in 20.61, but missed advancing to Nationals in the 100 when he was 16th with his time of 10.64.  Jordin Andrade just missed as well, placing 14th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 50.75.  Only the Top12 advance. Bret Scheve was 22nd overall in the 400 hurdles.  Justin Malnes placed 29th in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.43.

Mackenzie Flannagan was 24th in the first round of the women's 200 (14.43) earning the final spot for tomorrow's quarterfinals.

Delay in Texas Until At Least 7p.m.

Looking like Texas is going to deliver very few events on this day, if at all.

Weather Delay in Texas

We have a weather delay in Austin, which is what happens when you schedule a track meet in Texas instead of Boise.  They're held up until at least 6 p.m. Central Time.  Since they were supposed to start this morning, I don't see how they can get today's events in without spilling over until tomorrow or perhaps even Sunday.

Sunny and nice in Boise--they should have had the foresight to schedule the NCAA Western Regional in Idaho's capital instead of Texas's.

Bates Qualifies For National Championships

Sophomore Emma Bates finished strong to earn a Top 12 finish in the 10,000 meters yesterday at the NCAA Western Regional Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas and qualify for the NCAA National Championships in two weeks.

Bates finished in 35:01.18 and will be making her third appearance at Nationals.  The talented Bronco distance runner has already earned two All-America honors in the 5,000 in her short career thus far, and will try to qualify once again for Nationals in that event Saturday.

Jordan Andrade won his heat in the 400 meter hurdles and was sixth overall with a time of 51.18.  Andrade will race in the semi finals tonight.  Brett Scheve was fifth in that same heat with a lifetime best of 52.22, just good enough to qualify for the 24th and final spot in the quarterfinals.

Daveon Collins also advanced with a second-place finish in his heat of the 100 meters with a time of 10.38.  Collins finished 11th overall and will race in the quarterfinals tonight.

Mackenzie Flannigan was fifth in her 100 meter heat and finished 36th with a time of 11.81.

Rici Morrill was 6th in her heat of the women's 1,500 and was 31st overall with a time of 4:29.55.  Drew O'donoghue-McDonald was 11th in his heat and 39th overall in the men's 1,500 with a time of 3:56.11.

Earlier, Alyssa Osai was 39th in the hammer and senior Heather Pilcher was 45th in the long jump.

Action continues today in Austin with several Broncos competing.  Check out the schedule posted earlier in the week on Blue Through and Through.

Osai Finishes 13th in her Preliminary

Bad things can happen when you toss the hammer 19 feet under your seasonal best.  Alyssa Osai had thrown the hammer 194-10 earlier this year, but was recorded at 175-10 on this day.  She finished 13th in her group and did not advance.

Bettles Eliminated From Singles Competiton

Andy Bettles lost to lower seed Yannick Hanfmann of USC 6-2, 6-4 at the NCAA Tennis Singles Championships.  Bettles was eliminated with the loss.

Boise State Sends School Record-Tying 20 Individuals to NCAA Western Regional Track & Field Championships

All the last-chance qualifiers are done and the field is set for the two NCAA Regional Track & Field Championships.  Boise State will send 20 student-athletes in 22 events to the Western Regional in Austin Texas beginning next Thursday.  The 20 Broncos ties the most that Boise State has ever sent, matching the total of the 2007 team.

Emma Bates, a second-team All-American last season in the 5,000 and 10,000 last year, earns a spot in both events this year.  Alyssa Osai (hammer), Justin Malnes (110-hurdles) and Drew O-donoghue-McDonald (1,500) also return to the Regional this year.  

Jordin Andrade, who set a school record earlier this year, is the #5-ranked 400-meter hurdler in the West, while Daveon Collins is #6 in the 200 and #15 in the 100 and will join Andrade, Jeff Daw and Bret Scheve on the 4 x 400-meter relay team.  Boise State is the #21-ranked relay team in the region.  Scheve is also ranked #44 in the 400-meter hurdles.  Matt Post is ranked 8th in the West in the hammer, Zach Wiles is ranked #23 in the steeplechase, Malnes is #32 in the 110 hurdles, O'donoghue-McDonald is #39 in the 1,500, Austin Hamilton is #40 in the javelin and David Elliott is #45 in the 5,000.

Bates is the top-ranked Bronco woman at #13 in the 10,000 and #29 in the 5,000.  Osai is #26 in the hammer, Mackenzie Flannigan is #29 in the 200 and #32 in the 100, Tessa Murray is #33 in the 5,000, while Marisa VanderMalle is #25 in the steeplechase, Heather Pilcher is #37 in the long jump, Rici Morrill is #42 in the 1,500 and Taryn Campos is #44 in the west in the 200.  The relay team of Campos, Shannon Jacobs, Destiny Gammage and Heather Pilcher is #24 in the 4 x 100-meters.  

The competition is set for Thursday through Saturday in Austin, with the top twelve individuals and the top twelve relay teams advancing to the NCAA National Championships June 5-8 in Eugene, Oregon.

Kim Finishes Tied for 20th at NCAA West Regional Golf Championships

T.K. Kim had a one under-par each round of the three-day NCAA Western Regional Men's Golf Championships and finished tied for 20th.  Only the top finisher not on a competing team moves on to the NCAA National Championships and Kim finished seventh in that group.

Kim Picks Up A Stroke

T.K. Kim got a late birdie to finish the three-day NCAA Men's Western Regional Golf National Championship three under-par.  Currently, Kim is tied for 20th in the West with a few golfers left to finish.

T.K. Kim of Boise State is even-par today through 16 holes and is two under for the weekend.  He has moved into a tie for 21st in the region at the NCAA Men's Western Regional Golf Championships.

Where Are They Now? Kenny Kuehl

Kenny Kuehl went from being a walk-on in 1986 to becoming an All-American at Boise State.  After a redshirt season and his freshman year, Kuehl became the starter in 1987 and was fourth on the Bronco defense with 92 tackles.  He led the team with 6 interceptions returned for 110 yards and a touchdown and was credited with 5 deflections.  

In 1988, Kuehl blossomed into being one of the best defensive backs in school history, when he recorded 132 tackles, almost unheard of for a member of the secondary.  He also had four interceptions with another one returned for a touchdown, a sack and four pass deflections and on top of that, blocked a field goal.  He began work as a return specialist that season and returned four punts for 45 yards.  Folks took notice, as Kuehl earned All-Big Sky Conference honors.      

Kuehl had another 91 tackles in 1989 with 2 sacks, an interception returned for 27 yards (he always knew what to do when he got his hands on the ball!) and 6 pass deflections.  Kuehl was the main punt returner with 38 returns for 338 yards (8.9) and one touchdown and also returned 4 kickoffs for 104 yards.  Kuehl was recognized for his tremendous contributions when the Football Gazette & The Sports Network both selected him for 2nd Team-All-American.  He added a second straight berth on the All-Big Sky Conference team.

After starring at Boise State and playing as a free agent, Kenny started his own company in restoration construction and ran the company for 10 years.  Kuehl was awarded Business of the Year and Integrity Business of the Year.  In 1996, Kenny sold the company but has stayed active in sports, coaching and training people.

Kuehl has coached at the junior high and high school levels and trained professional athletes for the last five years.  Kenny is now the Youth Trainer at Omni-Fit, which offers personal fitness, yoga and training for families and youth football camps for kids.

Analysis After 3 Days of MW Men's Track

Boise State came in with a fairly good chance of winning the men's title.  But they didn't enter an athlete despite having Adam Ruggerio as one of the tops in the conference and lost valuable points there.  The Broncos started the running events in pretty good shape, and were not expected to score huge in field events, which is a marked change from when Coach Mike Maynard led the program.

But Boise State lost a lot of points in the steeplechase.  The Broncos are the biggest losers to this point, down 16 points from projections, while Wyoming is down 12.  Everyone else is benefiting from Boise State and Wyoming's poor performances:  New Mexico has gained 31 points and now is a co-favorite along with Air Force.  The Falcons have gained 18 points while Colorado State is up 22 from projections.

Boise State is now in serious danger of finishing next to last.

Clemson won the doubles point, in fact too easily.

Garrett Patton evened the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win at #6 singles.

Nathan Sereke was down a break, got it back late, then lost his serve to lose 6-4, 7-5 at #2 singles.  But seconds after that, Thomas Tenreiro won 7-5, 6-2 at #5 singles.

And we're tied at 2.

Scott Sears was headed for defeat, in fact the announcers were almost sure of it, but he got two breaks and trails, 6-4, 5-4.  Bettles leads 3-0 at #1 singles, but Pogostkin just lost a break in his crucial third set.  Filipp won the first set 6-2, but lost 6-3 in the second and now down 2-0. If Pogo loses, Sears and Bettles both have to win.  By the same token, if Scott can't hold on to even the match, Pogostkin has to come back and Bettles has to win his match.

Patton and Pogostkin Win First Sets in Singles

Garrett won 6-4 at #6 singles while Pogostkin won 6-4 at #4 singles.

But Sereke was a 6-4 victim in the first set, a match he needs to win for the Broncos to get out alive, especially having lost the doubles point.  And Scott Sears lost his set 6-4 at #3 singles.

Thomas Tenreiro is up 6-5 at #5 singles--he hasn't lost in months.  Bettles is behind 4-3 at #1 singles, one in which he is the underdog.

Colorado State Jumps Out to Huge Lead in Mountain West Men, San Diego State Roars Out to Big Lead in Women

By not entering either a decathlete or a heptahlete, Boise State is behind the eight-ball in the Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

To win the title, a team pretty much has to score points in every event, and you certainly don't want to give the competition a landslide.  But that is what has happened.  Colorado State scored 28 easy points in the decathlon with four athletes entered while defending champion Air Force got 5.  In the women's competition, San Diego State scored 22, while New Mexico (7 points), Wyoming (6), Nevada (3), Colorado State (1) all got a jump on Boise State.

But the main part of the competition begins tomorrow, and we'll see if the Broncos can make up the huge gap.

No Bronco Competing in Decathlon or Heptathlon

Boise State loses out on chances to score easy points in the multi-events, with no one entered in the men's decathlon or the women's heptathlon.  It's a gift to the other schools and puts Boise State behind from the start.

Projections for Mountain West Men's Track Championships

Boise State heads to Las Vegas for the Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which begins today.  Here are team projections for the Men's:

Boise State has been unbeatable in the field events in years past, while scoring less in running events.  This year, the situation is reversed.  Boise State is the leader in running events with 109, while only picking up 21 in field events.  If the Broncos can enter more people in the field events and beat that score of 21, they stand an excellent chance of coming home to Boise with a conference championship.

Kim Selected for NCAA Regional Golf Championship

The Boise State team may not have fared well at the Mountain West Men's Golf Championships as a whole, but senior T.K. Kim did his part, finishing fifth individually.  Kim not only won the regional qualifer for the U.S. Open, but has been selected to compete in the NCAA Regional Championships yesterday.  Kim will be one of five golfers competing in the West Regional at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Washington May 16-18.

"T.K. is the hardest-working guy you will meet," head coach Kevin Burton said. "He has put in the effort day-in, and day-out. This is absolutely a well-deserved accomplishment.

"Palouse Ridge is a course he has played in each of his four years at Boise State, so it's a course he knows really, really well."

Kim is the fifth Bronco selected to participate in the Regionals in school history, and the first since Troy Merritt in 2008.  The top individual at the regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships May 28-June 2.

Earlier in the day, Kim shot a 5-under 66 to advance to sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open at Tumble Creek Golf Club in Cle Elum, Washington on June 3.

Kim joins David Lebeck (1993), Jarrod Warner (1998), current PGA Pro Graham DeLaet (2003, 2004 and 2006) and Merritt (2008) as Broncos competing at the regionals.
