Emma Bates Named Mountain West Cross Country Women's Athlete of the Week

Boise State's biggest star in any sport apparently didn't rest over the offseason.  She's right back where she left off last track season.  Bates placed sixth in the Roy Griak Invitational, leading her teammates to a fourth-place finish.  Emma is the Mountain West Conference Cross Country Female Athlete of the Week, the second time this year she's won the award.

And more good news--Boise State is now #17 in the nation in cross country, the highest rank ever for the Broncos.

Bronco Volleyball Team Scores Impressive Win Over 11-3 Wyoming

The Wyoming Cowgirls came into the Mountain West Conference volleyball opener with a sparkling 11-2 mark, but it was the homestanding Boise State Broncos that came away with the 25-22, 21-25, 25-16, 25-19 victory in Bronco Gym tonight.

Alyssa Gammel and Sierra Nobley combined for 34 kills, and Gammel's six service aces set a school record for a four-set match as Boise State improved to 8-5 overall.
With the match tied at one set apiece, Gammel stepped up by serving four consecutive points, including two aces, to stretch the Bronco lead to 16-7 in the third set.  Gammel then opened the fourth set serving for seven straight points, including three aces.  That 7-0 advantage proved to be insurmountable as the Broncos clinched the match with a 25-19 victory.

Gammel finished with 15 kills, one assist, 10 digs and one block to go with her six aces.  Gammel is tied for seventh most all-time, but the other six achieved their marks in five sets.  Nobley recorded a team-high 19 kills and hit 36 percent of her shots while racking up seven digs, two blocks and two aces.  Maddy O'Donnell added nine kills while hitting 64.3%.  O'Donnell entered the game ranked sixth in the nation at 48.5%.  O'Donnell also had two aces and a team-high four blocks.

Sarah Baugh moved into fifth place all-time for career assists since 2001 with 51 tonight to give her 1,725 overall.

Boise State will host #7 Colorado State (13-1, 1-0) at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon in Bronco Gym.

Harwell Will Be a Bronco

Malek Harwell had over a dozen other offers, but he chose to come play basketball at Boise State.  A great recruit for the Broncos.

Harwell, a 6-4, 175 pound guard from Pocatello's Century High School, averaged 21 points a game in leading his team to the Idaho 4A championship game.

Heidemann earns Mountain West Conference Player of the Week

Junior Brooke Heidemann is this week's Mountain West Conference Offensive Soccer Player of the Week, the conference announced yesterday.
Heidemann was a key factor in Boise State's two wins over Idaho and Idaho State last weekend as the Lady Broncos captured the Governor's Cup.  Heidemann scored three goals and had an assist in the two wins.

Congratulations Brooke!

Bronco Soccer Team Wins Again

The Boise State soccer team is off to another great start.  Brooke Heidemann and KT Clayton each scored twice as the Lady Broncos downed Idaho State in their home opener, 4-1 yesterday.

"We talked a lot about the importance of winning the state during the offseason," said head coach Jim Thomas.  "The fact that we got to follow through with it is big for us and bodes well for the rest of the season."
A crowd of 681 turned out to welcome Boise State, which traveled to Moscow for a 2-0 win over Idaho Friday.  Idaho State, now 2-2 on the season, took the first two shots in the first 14 minutes of the game before Boise State struck.
Hailey DeVries set up the score by taking possession of the ball from her own end and taking it upfield.  Just prior to the midfield stripe, DeVries sent a perfect pass to Heidemann, who broke free.  Heidemann moved into the box and booted a shot to the back of the net from 10 yards away.  It was Heidemann's third goal of the year.
Four minutes later, Clayton connected on a pass from Heidemann.  Then, Heidemann grabbed control of the ball on the left wing, dribbled in, and sent a strike across the box.  Clayton flew in and connected just enough to send the ball trickling inside the right post for Boise State's third goal.
Meanwhile, freshman goalkeeper Janelle Flores kept ISU at bay with five first half saves, and Boise State led at halftime, 2-0.
In the 61st minute, Kayla Tucker took the ball down the right wing and sent a high cross near the far post.  Heidemann soared over the Bengal players and headed the ball inside the right post for a spectacular goal.
"She does this stuff all the time in training," said Thomas. "We just want everyone to see it. When she out jumps  a kid who has three or four inches on her, now you start to see some of that athleticism, obviously we saw it when she played goalie for us. A play like that is a testament to her technical development and pure athleticism."
Clayton notched her second goal of the afternoon eight months later, when Kelsey Nicassio spotted Clayton heading from the left wing.  Nicassio sent Clayton a perfect pass that KT reached right before the Bengal defender and goalie.  Clayton sent the ball into the goal from 20 yards out.
It was just the sixth time in school history that two players scored multiple goals in a match--the last duo to achieve it was Shannon Saxton and Cheyenne Jones in 2010 vs. New Mexico State.
Idaho State scored just 13 seconds later, when Madeline Gochnour sent a shot into the goal when Flores fell down.
"We don't take a ton of shots," Thomas said. "We don't shoot until it's right. We were predatory in front of goal today, and that's what it looks like when we're on our game."
Boise State hosts Gonzaga this afternoon at 4.
