It was a tough battle, but Patton's Army has done it again--they've won another conference title!
Boise State edged New Mexico this afternoon to take the Mountain West Conference tournament and the automatic NCAA berth that goes with it. Boise State lost the doubles point, making it tougher on themselves.
But when the six players scattered to the singles courts, the Broncos took care of business, winning four of those six matches. Garrett Patton won his match at #6 singles, 6-3, 6-4 to even the score at 1. Thomas Tenreiro won yet, taking a 6-3, 6-2 straight set victory. Scott Sears was beaten at #3 singles 6-3, 6-1 as New Mexico tied the match at 2. Mitch McDaniels of New Mexico downed Fillipp Pogostkin 6-3, 6-4 and was within one of stealing the crown.
But dependable Andy Bettles kept Boise State's hopes alive with a 6-2, 6-4 win at #1 singles. All ties turned to court #2 where Nathan Sereke was locked in a three-set match with Conor Berg of New Mexico. The two competitors traded 6-2 wins in the opening two sets. Berg scored a service break to go up 4-2 in the third set. But Sereke fought back. They then proceeded to a 6-6 tie in the third set, bringing on a tiebreaker in an already dramatic match. Sereke won that tiebreaker, leading to hoots and hollers from the Broncos. They were Mountain West Champs for the second straight year!
Boise State will find out their draw in the NCAA's Tuesday, but one thing's for sure--the Broncos will score more points in the Learfield Cup just for making the tourney.
