Derrick Marks' Runner Gives Boise State Last-Second 70-69 Win Over Colorado State

Boise State withstood an 11-point Colorado State run and freshman Derrick Marks' basket with eight/tenths of a second remaining gave the Broncos their second consecutive Mountain West Conference win.


Drew Wiley's three-pointer with 4:43 left seemingly gave Boise State a commanding lead at 64-56.  But Wes Eikmier came right back on the next possession to nail a three of his own and, when teammates Jesse Carr and  Kaipo Sabas rattled home more treys, CSU had an 11-0 run to take a 67-64 lead.  They too seemed to be in good shape with 1:48 left but that's what makes college basketball so exciting.  


Anthony Drmic drove the lane and somehow got the ball to a cutting Kenny Buckner for the layup to put Coach Leon Rice's club within one.  Eikmier's basket with 58 seconds once again extended the lead to three but 16 seconds later, Buckner scored another layup, this time assisted by Tre Nichols.


Boise State had to play the "D" and they did as CSU failed to get a shot off with 6.5 seconds left.  Marks took the in-bounds pass, drove the length of the court, broke free for a shot, and banked it in.  To say that this was a special win for this young team is putting it mildly.  Fans rushed the court and the team enjoyed some deserved last-second magic.


Buckner had by far his best game of his Bronco career to date with 20 points while freshman Drmic chipped in 10.  Boise State hit 19-of-22 free throws (86.4%).  Just money from the line.


Eikmier was sensational for CSU with a career-high 30 points, shooting 9-18 from the floor and 11-14 from the free-throw line.  Carr came off the bench for 15 points for the Rams.  


Boise State hosts TCU Saturday at 2 p.m. in Taco Bell Arena.  We owe those guys.

Boise State just went from a one-point lead to an eight-point lead with 5 minutes left and believe it or not, there were people in Taco Bell Arena that were not standing and cheering.  You know who you were, and now so do we!

Boise State not playing great but leading Colorado State in Boise, 27-22.


Colorado State of course nowhere near as good as UNLV or San Diego State, each of which Boise State took to the wire.

Marlene Pietzuch Takes Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Boise State's Marlene Pietzuch was honored today as the Mountain West Conference Tennis Player of the Week.

Pietzuch combined with sister Manuela to win her doubles match against Eastern Washington and Idaho and posted two wins in singles.


Boise State faces Pepperdine and Arizona State in Malibu, California February 24-25.

Kurt Felix Gets Mountain West Athlete of the Week

Boise State multi-event star Kurt Felix was recognized as the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week once again, sharing the honor with Ross Millington of New Mexico.

Felix shattered the Boise State and Mountain West all-time record for the heptathlon last weekend with 5,771 points.  Felix qualified for the upcoming NCAA Indoor National Championships, set for next month in Nampa, Idaho.

Broncos Shut Out Host Cal-Davis

Aubray Zell turned in another shutout in leading Boise State to a 3-0 win over UC Davis at the Aggie Stampede this afternoon, Boise State's fourth win in five outings.

Zell was splendid in a three-hit, no-walk complete game.  Katie Engelbrecht's two-run triple capped a two-out rally for the Broncos in the fourth inning to put the first two runs on the scoreboard.  Tazz Weatherly laced a double to right center, Jordan Krieger followed with an infield single and Engelbrecht found her pitch and lined it to left center.

"I'm really proud of the way the team played this entire weekend," said head coach Erin Thorpe. "We made great strides as a program and really came together as a team. We were able to play five solid games and that should be a great confidence boost as we have two really challenging weekends coming up."

We're about to find out how good this Boise State team really is.  They'll face #12 Washington, #19 UCLA and Notre Dame on consecutive days at the Campbell Cartier Classic in San Diego next weekend.  Boise State will open the tournament Friday at 11 a.m. Mountain Time against UC Santa Barbara.

Felix's NCAA Qualifying Mark Highlights Second Day of Action at Boise State Team Challenge

Kurt Felix, who won all four events in the first day of the heptathlon on Friday, finished strong Saturday to break his own school record and qualify for a spot in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Nampa, Idaho March 9-10.

Felix finished third in the 60-meter hurdles, third in the pole vault and fourth in the 1,000-meters to score 5,771 points, well over his former mark of 5,691 and past the NCAA qualifying mark of 5,750.  


Michael Walrath also broke a school record set by Pete Nunez in 1988 when he won the 800-meters in 1:51.23.  Drew O'donoghue-McDonald, Sawyer Bosch and Danielle Valentine also put their names into the Bronco record book with top-three performances.  O'donoghue-McDonald was part of a contingent of distance runners who competed in the Mile at the Husky Invite in Seattle.  Drew ran a 4:05.63, #2 all-time at Boise State.  Bosch finished 12th in the 3000-Meter Invite competition at the Husky Invite with a time of 8:03.93, the second-fastest time ever at Boise State.  Valentine soared 12-feet, 9.50-inches in the pole vault to tie for the second-best indoor mark in Bronco history.


Rolando Trammel also won the 60-meter hurdles in front of the home crowd at Jackson's Track with a personal-best of 7.90, the long jump (23-2.50) and joined Karrie Butler, Jeff Daw and Manoah Wesson on the victorious 4x400-meter relay team.  Allan Schroeder won the Boise State Team Challenge Mile (4:14.82) while Taryn Treadway captured the 3,000 with a time of 10:31.43.


Boise State rests up for the 2012 Mountain West Championships, taking place this year in Albuquerque, New Mexico February 23-25.. 

Broncos Top Air Force 72-61 on the Road

Having gone through the first pass at each of the Mountain West Conference teams without a win, Boise State coach Leon Rice inserted freshman Joe Hanstad into the starting lineup.  The move paid off, as Hanstad scored 19 points to lead the Broncos to a 72-61 road win at Air Force last night.  The Broncos had lost to the same Air Force team by 15 points in Boise last month.


Freshman Anthony Drmic continued his solid play with his first career double-double--12 points and 10 rebounds.  Drew Wiley and freshman Derrick Marks each had 11 points and junior college transfer Kenny Buckner added 10 for Boise State.  Sophomore Jeff Elorriaga, playing his first game since fracturing his thumb against TCU on January 21, led the team with five assists and added six rebounds.


Boise State, which had played national powers UNLV and San Diego State down to the wire only to lose by double digits to the league's lower-ranked teams, built as much as a 20-point lead in the second half.  Air Force rallied to cut the deficit to 11, but the Broncos held on for their first Mountain West win.  Boise State connected on 21-of-25 free throw attempts (84%) to keep the Falcons at bay.  Boise State improves to 11-12 on the season and 1-7 in the Mountain West, while Air Force dropped to 11-11 overall and 1-7 in league play.


Boise State returns home to host Colorado State Wednesday night in Taco Bell Arena.  Tipoff is 8 p.m.

Boise State Has Defeated Nevada 7-3 in Women's Softball

Tara Glover had three hits and Devon Bridges knocked in two runs as Boise State remained undefeated with a 7-3 victory over Nevada this morning in Davis, California.


Aubray Zell allowed just one hit and struck out four to earn her second victory of the young season.

Boise State Finishes Second at Chicago Style Invitational

The Broncos had UCLA in their sights, down just 15/100th's of a point with one rotation to go.  But the Bruins poured it on in the final event to score an easy win tonight.  Boise State just can't get over the hump with an elite team.  

That said, Boise State finally got a 196 team score, something they will have to do each and every week if they want to crack the Top 10.

Boise State in 2nd at Chicago Style Invitational

Boise State scored 49.2 on vault, what they needed to have, but just 48.9 on floor exercises and the Broncos are already down to #7 UCLA by more than 3/10th's of a point.

Through two rotations, UCLA has 98.450 to 98.100 for Boise State.  Illinois has 97.725 while Missouri has 97.575.

UCLA has two score of 9.9 or better, while Boise State has zero.

Felix Sweeps Day One of Heptathlon

Boise State's Kurt Felix won all four events in the first day of competition in the men's Heptathlon at the Boise State Team Track Challenge at Jackson's Track in Nampa.  Felix won the 60-meter dash, the shot put, the long jump and the high jump to grab a huge lead in the competition.  Day 2 is tomorrow with the final three events.
