Bronco Tennis Team Gets Big Win

The Boise State men's tennis team has been looking for a signature win for several years that would return the Broncos to their place as one of the top teams in the country.  They got that win last evening over #26 Washington 4-3 at the Boise Racquet & Swim Club.  Now we'll see if they can build on it. This was one of the great matches ever played in Boise from start to finish.  The first two doubles teams split, putting the all-important doubles point in the hands of the #3 duos.  Garrett Patton and Fillip Pogostkin of Boise State battled Marton Bots and Matt Smith down to the wire until their match was tied at eight games apiece.  A tense tiebreaker followed, with the Bronco duo prevailing 8-6. Kyle McMorrow, the #15 player in the country, quickly tied the match up when he downed James Meredith of Boise State 6-3, 6-2.  Nathan Sereke put the Broncos ahead 2-1 with his eighth straight win, a 6-3, 7-6 win over Washington's Nicholas Kamisar.  Then, freshman Patton came through for Boise State with a two-set win over Viktor Farkas, both won through tie-breakers. Andrew Bettles by this time had won his first set 6-4 before losing 3-6 in the second.  But Bettles stepped up to win the deciding set 6-2 and secure the victory.  Washington fell for just the second time this season, with their only other loss coming to #10 Duke. Boise State remains home next weekend taking on Montana State and Idaho State Friday, then coming back Saturday to test their endurance against Idaho. Boise State Upsets #26 Washington

An appropriate way for the Boise State tennis team to honor the memory of Steve Appleton--with a victory.


The Bronco team shocked #26 Washington tonight at the Boise Racquet & Swim Club in Boise, 4-3.  Boise State won the doubles point and split the six singles matches.  More details soon.

Lady Broncos Score Road Win in New Mexico

Nicole Brady and Lauren Lenhardt combined for 35 points as Boise State defeated New Mexico 68-64 this afternoon in Albuquerque.  


Coach Gordy Presnell's team used a timely 16-4 run to take a 63-48 lead with 4:17 left, then held off the Lobos down the stretch.  The victory snapped Boise State's five-game losing streak as they advanced to 12-11 overall and 3-5 in conference.


Brady hit 17 of Boise State's 29 points in the first half and finished with 19.  Brady hit seven-of-11 from the floor and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.  The Lady Broncos took a 29-26 lead into the locker room.  Boise State never trailed in the second half as Lenhardt, in foul trouble in the opening half, exploded for 16 points.  The junior from Eagle, Idaho, scored 12 consecutive points in one stretch to give Boise State a 45-40 lead with 11:39 to play.  Lenhardt finished with a six-for-11 shooting performance, five rebounds and one steal.

Ahead 47-44 with 9:28 remaining, the Broncos went on their run and held on for the win to sweep the season series with New Mexico.  Kati Isham netted 13 points, including eight in the second half.  Cinnamon Lister had seven points and a team-leading five assists.
Caroline Durbin led New Mexico with 27 points followed by Porche Torrance with 17 and a game-high 15 boards. 

Boise State shot 43.8 percent in the second half to finish the game at 41 percent, 33.3 percent (5-15) from the arc and a solid 76.5 percent (13-17) from the free-throw line. New Mexico finished at 40.4 percent from the hardwood, 30 percent (3-10) from the arc and 75 percent (15-20) from the charity stripe. The Lobos outrebounded the Broncos 42 to 35.

New Mexico slipped to 7-15 and 1-7 in conference.

Boise State hosts Air Force Saturday, February 11 at 4 p.m. in Taco Bell Arena.

Lady Bronco Gymnasts Return to Form

#16 Boise State bounced back from a disappointing effort last week for a win on the road over tough BYU 195.750 to 194.750.  

Boise State started out with a solid 48.875 on bars and impressed the judges with a 49.450 on vault, the second-best team total in school history.  After a lower than expected 48.175 on floor, the Lady Broncos ended the day with a 49.250 on beam to clinch the victory.  Even more important, the beam was the apparatus that prevented Boise State from winning last weekend and they came back with a score that is the seventh-best in school history in that event.

As co-head coach Neil Resnick said after the meet, the Broncos "have now scored 49 on every event this season."  "We look forward to next week and the opportunity to do it all in one meet."  That's really the only thing keeping Boise State from being one of the Top 10 teams in the country.

Senior Amy Glass won titles on the beam, floor and the all-around.  It's good to have her back and performing at that level.  Glass rang up a 9.90 on beam to earn her 11th career win, #3 all-time at Boise State for beam wins.  Glass achieved a 9.850 on floor to win that event and her 39.450 overall score was the 15th-best ever at Boise State.  Glass has now won 15 all-around titles, #2 in school history.  Glass also scored 9.90 on vault to tie for second and finished tied for fourth on bars with an excellent 9.80.

Junior Hailey Gaspar is also performing well with a season-best 9.925 to win the vault, her sixth career win on that apparatus.

"I am really proud of the beam team," said co-head coach Tina Bird.  "They stepped it up and finished the meet strong. It's a test of character to have to make up some tenths on your last event, and my team showed they won't be rattled."

BYU's Natalie Eyre-Pickard won the bars title with a 9.875 score, while Krysten Koval tied with Glass for the beam title.  BYU's Raquel Willman placed second in the all-around (39.20), while Boise State's Potvin-Green placed third 38.725.

The Broncos continue on the road next week, traveling to Chicago, Illinois for the Chicago Style Invite next Friday, February 10.  The Broncos know they can compete with the best in the nation.  It's important for them to win so they know they can beat the best in the nation.  Besides Boise State, the other top teams will be #7 UCLA, #17 Missouri and #19 Illinois.

6:41 left, it's New Mexico 59, Boise State 41.  Maybe if Coach Rice tells them their opponent is ranked in the Top 25 each game, he'll get the team's best effort.

Broncos Able to Close to 32-25 on New Mexico

It's halftime at Taco Bell Arena.  Boise State was in danger of losing touch with New Mexico but they were able to cut the lead to 32-25 at halftime.  Remember it is just days since Boise State held a 10-point lead on the road against a much better team, #17 San Diego State.

Here We Go Again...

Boise State's basketball team can stay with the top teams in the nation, just not the others.  Playing at home, the Broncos are down 10-4 to New Mexico.


I'm hoping to jinx the Lobos into becoming the first MWC team to lose to Boise State.

Emma Bates Tops UCLA Runners in Women's Mile, Boise State Takes Four of Top Eight Places

Emma Bates made it a sweep for Boise State mile runners, joining Drew O'Donoghue-McDonald in the winner's circle at the Bronco Classic in Nampa.

Boise State Milers Take Top Four Places At Bronco Classic

Boise State long-distance men captured the first four places in the mile and five of the top eight.  That's impressive enough, but when you have UCLA in the field, doubly so.  Drew O'Donoghue McDonald missed by a bit over ten seconds of running a sub-four minute mile with a time of 4:10.27.

Boise State Tennis Team Hosts #26 Washington

Bronco tennis fans will have a chance to see one of the nation's top teams when #26 Washington visits Boise today.

The Huskies are 4-1 with their lone loss to #10 Duke.  Washington is led by junior Kyle McMorrow, who is #15 in the nation in singles.

The match gets underway at 5:30 p.m. at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club on North Cole Road in Boise.  There will be a Kid's Day Tennis Clinic free of charge before and after the match.  Children 11 and younger are invited to come to the Racquet and Swim Club at 4 p.m.  Youths 12 and up are welcome to take part in a clinic and games after the match.  

Boise State Hosts New Mexico

Boise State fans are wondering which Bronco team will show up this afternoon when Boise State hosts New Mexico--the one that took #12 UNLV and #17 San Diego State to the wire or the one which lost to Mountain West Conference pretenders in the other four conference games.


New Mexico ran out to a 14-2 non-conference record, only slightly better than Boise State's 10-5.  But the Lobos didn't let the conference teams intimidate them the way Boise State has, sporting a 4-2 MWC record to Boise State's 0-6.  


Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. today in Taco Bell Arena.  The game will be nationally televised by NBC Sports Network.

Lady Broncos Host Weber State

The Boise State women's tennis team will host Weber State today.  The match gets underway at 10 a.m. at the Boas Indoor Tennis Facility.

Boise State Track Team Hosts Bronco Classic Today

Another slate of top track teams will be at the Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa today for the Bronco Classic.  Boise State welcomes 15 teams, including UCLA, Washington, Utah State, Nevada and Fresno State today in the fifth of six home indoor meets.

Boise State's men are ranked #72 in the latest rankings while the Bronco women are #119.  The meet gets underway at 9 a.m. this morning with the women's high jump.  The mixed 800-meter run will get track activities going at 10:10 a.m.  Tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students.

Tickets for the NCAA National Indoor Track and Field Championships are also on sale in the ticket box at Jacksons Track.  Boise State will host the Championships at Jacksons Track March 9-10.  All-session passes are $50 for Adult Reserved, $45 for Adult General Admission, #7 for Senior/Student Reserved and 30 for Senior/Student General Admission.  You can also get National Championship tickets at ictickets.com
