Moore Named Finalist for Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award

Boise State senior quarterback Kellen Moore has been named as one of five finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, given annually to the nation's top collegiate quarterback.


Robert Griffin III of Baylor, Landry Jones from Oklahoma, Andrew Luck of Stanford and Brandon Weeden of Oklahoma State are the other finalists.


Candidates must be completing their college eligibility or be a fourth-year junior, on schedule to graduate with his class.  Eligible candidates are judged on character, citizenship, scholastic achievement, leadership and athletic accomplishments.

Moore, is also a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien and Maxwell Awards, has completed 220-297 passes for 2,549 yards and 31 touchdowns through the first nine games of the season.   Moore already has broken the NCAA record for most wins as a starter (46), ranks fourth in career touchdown passes (130) and is seventh in collegiate history in career passing yards (13,416).

The Golden Arm Award will be presented December 9.  Past winners include Colt McCoy of Texas (2009), Matt Ryan of Boston College (2007), Matt Leinart (USC, 2005), Eli Manning (Mississippi, 2003) and Peyton Manning (Tennessee, 1997)

Moore Breaks Another Bronco School Record

With his performance against San Diego State last night, Kellen Moore has broken the all-time record for the most career 300-yard passing games at Boise State.


Moore now has 15 such games, eclipsing the mark of 14 set by Ryan Dinwiddie from 2000-2003.  Here is the Top 10:

Boise State Leads Colorado Christian 48-24

Halftime and Leon Rice's team has doubled up Colorado Christian so far at Taco Bell Arena.

Bronco Women Roll Up 22-10 Lead on Southern Oregon

Boise State off to a good start in their season opener.  The Lady Broncos are ahead 22-10 over Southern Oregon with 7:44 remaining in the first half.

Broncos now ahead 80-47 with 4:07 left.

Taco Bell Doubleheader Tonight

It will be twice the fun tonight in Taco Bell Arena with a doubleheader of roundball action.

The Boise State women host Southern Oregon tonight with a 5:30 tipoff while the men begin the season against Colorado Christian--that game should begin around 7:30 tonight.

Boise State Volleyball Team Off to Rough Start

The Broncos are taking on San Diego State, which at 8-4 in the Mountain West and 15-8 overall is one of the conference's top teams.  SDSU has grabbed the lead with a 25-15 win in the first set and they are leading 15-4 in the second.

The Boise State volleyball team hosts San Diego State tonight in a key match to try to improve the Broncos' standing in the Mountain West.  First serve at 7 p.m. in Bronco Gym.

Joey Nebeker Signs with Boise State

Joey Nebeker, the Idaho 2A State basketball Player of the Year, has signed a letter of intent to play for Boise State.

Nebeker, a 6-foot-7, 210-pound forward from Melba High School, led his team to their first-ever state championship last year and boasts a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

“The character and work ethic that Joey possesses both on the court and in the classroom was extremely important to us, and it will propel him to a great career,” Bronco head coach Leon Rice said. “He’s a kid that is going to work hard every day to get better, and he will continue to improve.

“We really liked his scoring ability and feel for the game, and we were excited about the opportunity to recruit a high-level local player.”

Nebeker averaged 20 points, seven rebounds and three blocks per game last year.  As a sophomore, Nebeker hit for 20.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game as a sophomore as Melba finished fourth in the state tournament.

Boise State Signs Two Nationally-Respected Gymnasts

The Boise State gymnastics program has attracted two decorated gymnasts to Boise.  Krystine Jacobsen of Norfolk, Virginia and Maddie Krentz of Phoenix, Arizona have signed letters of intent to compete for the Broncos.

Jacobsen competed for the Excalibur Gymnastics Club in Virginia Beach, where she was a member of the TOPS National B Team in 2004 before moving to the A Team in 2005.  The following year, Jacobsen competed for the U.S. Challenge Hopes Elite team and was a junior elite competitor on the international circuit in 2008 and 2009.  Jacobsen as 17th all-around in the Junior Olympics in 2007. 

Krentz was honored as the 2010 Arizona State Athlete of the Year for her performance on the Arizona Sunrays club team in Phoenix.  Krentz finished fourth on vault at the regionals in 2009 and was third in 2010.  She finished seventh on bars, ninth on the floor and 20th all-around at the 2010 Junior Olympics. 

"We are so excited to sign two gymnasts with such high level backgrounds," explained Bird. "Maddie Krentz has an exciting resume of complicated skills that will help take us to the next level.  Krystine Jacobsen has major competition experience and elegant lines in her gymnastics.  Both gymnasts will make an immediate impact in our program."

Askew Inks Letter of Intent to Play at Boise State

Miquelle Askew has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Boise State, according to women's basketball coach Gordy Presnell.

If you're going to be an elite team on the national stage, which is want Presnell wants for his team, you've got to have strong center play.  Askew is 6-3 and has been a four-year starter for Skyline High School in South Jordan, Utah.  Last season, she averaged 14 points, eight rebounds, six assists, four blocks and a steal in earning all-conference and all-state honors.  In other words, she's a scoring force inside, is a bit of an intimidator on defense and has great vision.

"We are excited for Miquelle to join our Bronco basketball family," said Presnell. "Miquelle is an outstanding young lady and student. She is one of the top post players in the west and has a huge upside. We look forward to Miquelle being an inside presents on our team." 

In the last two seasons at Skyline, Askew has led the the Eagles to a 23-1 conference record and 34-12 overall.  Skyline has made three consecutive 4A state tournament appearances.
