Boise State Men, Women Finish 17th at Roy Griak Invitational

When J.W. Hardy, who had made Northern Arizona a perennial national cross country power, took over at Boise State, you knew the goal was to do the same for the Broncos.


Hardy signed Boise State's teams up to participate in one of the top competitions in the nation--the Roy Griak Invitational in St. Paul, Minnesota.  While both Bronco teams finished 17th, they weren't the worst in the field and the experience will be invaluable as they bumped elbows with the best in the country.


Freshman Vince Hamilton led the Boise State men's team with an 8-kilometer time of 24:53.  Boise State defeated seven teams, including Iowa, Arizona and Kansas State.  North Carolina State won the men's competition.


Marisa VanderMalle paced the Bronco women, covering the 5-k course in 21:41.  The Boise State women finished ahead of nine teams, including Oklahoma, South Carolina and Kansas State.  California won the title with 128 points with fellow Mountain West team Colorado State 13th.

Boise State Suffers First Mountain West Volleyball Loss

 Boise State's volleyball team suffered its first conference loss last night to #20 Colorado State.


Colorado State jumped out early with an easy 25-13 first set win.  The second set included three tied and two lead changes, but CSU won going away 25-17.  There were 11 ties and five lead changes in the final set that the Rams won 25-20.


Fiona Jones had seven kills and 12 digs to lead the Bronco attack.  Breann Nesselhuf had 13 assists.


Katelyn Steffan had 14 kills and 3 solo blocks for Colorado State, while Deedra Foss had 32 assists.


After 14 road games, the 9-5 Broncos finally play a home match tomorrow night against Weber State.  Boise State hosts TCU Thursday and New Mexico Saturday.  Those matches will all start at 7 p.m. in Bronco Gym.

Boise State Tops Wyoming 3-2

The Boise State volleyball team made history with its first Mountain West Conference victory.  The Broncos toppled Wyoming in Laramie tonight 3-2 to advance their season record to 9-4.


Fiona Jones led Boise State with 14 kills.  The Broncos won the first two sets before a furious Cowgirl rally tied the match.  But Wyoming led much of the first set, as the Broncos took their first lead 16-15 on the way to a 25-20 win.  The two teams battled nearly point for point in the second set before Boise State prevailed 25-23.


"I was really happy with the way the team battled when the match got tight," said coach Shawn Garus. "We let momentum slip away and allowed Wyoming back into the match. We pulled it together, fought hard in the fifth and came away with a big victory tonight."  


Breann Nesselhuf had nine kills, 27 assists, 14 digs and three block assists while Liz Harden and Darlene Nwaqbuo had nine kilss each and Brittany Reardon and Elizabeth Griffin added eight kills each.


Reese Plante had 18 kills for Wyoming, wihle Jodi Purdy added 14 and Erin Kirby had 11 kills and 10 block assists.


The Broncos meet #20 Colorado State Saturday afternoon at 1.

Bronco Volleyball Team Officially Opens Play in the Mountain West

The Boise State volleyball team, which just missed a win over #22 Oklahoma Saturday, ventures to Laramie, Wyoming to open conference play against the University of Wyoming.

The Bronco team played superb ball against Oklahoma in Norman, taking the shocked Sooners to the wire.  Coach Shawn Garu's squad hopes to continue that momentum into its first season in the Mountain West.  As usual, you can hear about the results first on Blue Through and Through.  I care about everything Bronco related, not just fooball and basketball, and want to make sure you get the results while they're still fresh.

Moore Recognized Nationally

Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore was honored a the Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Week following his sterling performance against Toledo.  Moore was also one of eight quarterbacks that were named a Manning Award Star of the Week.

Moore placed his name in the Bronco record book in five different categories last Friday, hitting 32-of-42 passes for 455 yards and five touchdowns as the Broncos ran away from Toledo 40-15.

Schueren Cited by Mountain West as Offensive Player of the Week

A Boise State student-athlete has won a Mountain West Conference Player of the Week Award and it's someone not named Kellen Moore.

Freshman midfielder Shannon Schueren is this week's Player of the Week after her game-winning goal in the 102nd minute gave Boise State a 1-0 victory over South Dakota.  It was the second game-winner for Schueren, who headed hom a goal in double overtime against Portland State last weekend.  Schueren tops the team with three goals this season.

Isn't It Interesting?

That days (perhaps hours) after Auburn declared quarterback Cam Newton ineligible last year, the NCAA cleared him to play, yet we are now going on three weeks and we still don't know if Gerald Boldewijn and Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe are eligible.

Boise State's Status in Ever-Changing Conference Landscape

If the conferences really want to go to 16 teams, which I think will prove to be a gigantic failure, here is what will likely happen:

If Texas goes to the Pac-12, along with three other Big 12 teams, the Big 12 and Big East will merge, and Boise State would likely be invited into that conference.

If the Pac-12 won't let Texas continue its Longhorn Network, keeping all the profits for itself, there is talk that Boise State would be the other team into the Pac-12.  But I think that's just talk.  The arrogance of the Pac-12 will likely get in the way of their brains.

If these things happen, the remainder of the Mountain West Conference will likely merge with Conference USA.

Boise State's Kellen Moore is the Mountain West Player of the Week

Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore once again was awarded the Player of the Week honors from the Mountain West Conference.


The Bronco Heisman Trophy favorite was 32-42 for 455 yards and five touchdowns in a 40-15 victory over Toledo last Friday.
