The Boise State soccer team found out how far it has to go in its new conference.
In a poll of league coaches, the Broncos were voted to finish sixth this fall. San Diego State is the favorite (34 points), just ahead of New Mexico with 33 points.
The Broncos return two of their top three point-leaders from last year's team that finished just two points out of first place in the Western Athletic Conference. I'm sure Coach Steve Lucas has drilled it into his squad that the talent level in the MWC is significantly higher than the WAC.
Boise State opens its initial Mountain West campaign September 30 in Laramie, Wyoming against the Cowgirls.

Boise State Signs Home and Home Agreement with Southern Mississippi
The open spots on upcoming football schedules are going fast. Boise State and Southern Mississippi today agreed to a home-and-home series. The Broncos will travel to Southern Mississippi next year on October 6 with the Golden Eagles returning the visit September 28 the following season.
Depending on the Hawai'i game in 2013, the Broncos have 1-2 openings for that season.

Simulation Football League Semi-Finals
The regular season has ended and four teams have emerged as the best of the last 10 years in college football.
We played a college format of 12 games in the regular season with two divisions. The first consisted of the national champions from the last 10 years, while the last 10 Boise State teams were in the opposite division. Each team played the other nine in their division with three games chosen at random against teams from the other division.
At the end of 12 weeks, the 2001 Miami Hurricanes won the Championship Division with an 11-1 record, losing only to the 2009 Alabama team on the final weekend. The 2004 USC and 2005 Texas teams finished tied with 9-3 records, with the Trojans earning the playoff berth on the basis of a head-to-head victory over the Longhorns. In the Boise State Division, the 2009 Broncos reigned supreme with an 11-1 mark. The 2010 Boise State team finished second with a 9-3 record and will be the other representative in the four-team playoffs.
In one semifinal, it will be the 2009 Broncos going against USC. Jeremy Avery had a spectacular regular season, rushing for 1,573 yards and 20 touchdowns and finishing second to kicker Kyle Brotzman with 162 points. Kellen Moore was accurate on 293-of-454 throws for 3,998 yards and 31 touchdowns against the best teams of the last 10 years, with only three interceptions. Titus Young was the fifth-leading receiver in the league with 65 catches for 933 yards and seven scores while Austin Pettis had 57 catches for 847 yards and five TD's and tight end Kyle Efaw chipped in with 42 grabs for 487 yards and three scores. Brotzman led all SFL kickers with 39 field goals. Defensively, Jeron Johnson and Kyle Wilson each had three interceptions while end Ryan Winterswyck had five sacks to lead the Broncos.
USC quarterback Matt Leinart led the Trojans with 294-432 passing for 3,867 yards and 23 touchdowns against just four picks. LenDale White paced USC with 1,012 yards (15th in the SFL) and 16 TD's. Leinart was able to distribute the ball well over the course of the season, with Steve Smith (55-767 and five touchdowns) and Dwayne Jarrett (46-532 and 4 TD's) his top two targets. Ryan Killeen had 20 field goals for USC while Matt Grootegoed had three interceptions and Collin Ashton had three sacks to lead the Trojan defense.
In the other semifinal this Saturday, the 2010 Boise State will challenge the 2001 Hurricanes. Miami was one of the most exciting teams in the league with a balanced attack that kept defenses guessing all year long. Ken Dorsey hit 278-of-467 passes for 3,920 yards and 19 touchdowns but also suffered 15 interceptions. Clinton Portis was third in the league with 1,684 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns. Ethenic Sands was Dorsey's favorite receiver with 57 catches for 887 yards and five TD's.
But Miami's defense was superb all year long. Darrell McGlover (eight sacks) and Maurice Sikes (seven) were 1-2 in that department and the Boise State line will have to be aware of them at all times. Edward Reed and John Square had four sacks each in the aggressive Hurricane attack defense. Phillip Buchanon was second to the 2002 Gabe Franklin in interceptions with five. Todd Sievers was highly reliable, as the senior was fourth in the SFL with 31 field goals.

Andrew Pint Commits to Boise State
I had heard speculation about this a week ago but wanted to confirm it. Andrew Pint, a linebacker for Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, has commited to play football for Boise State. Pint went to the Bronco Football Camp in June and fell in love with the school and the city. He was offered a scholarship following the camp and now, he's a Bronco!
Pint plays mostly inside linebacker at Valor Christian. Pint has good size already (6-2, 219) and had offers from UNLV and Northern Colorado but increasing interest from Air Force, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State and Colorado. Pint has squatted 450 pounds and lifts just short of 300 in the clean.
Pint recently returned from a two-week trip to Uganda, where he helped build a medical facility, worke with young children and helped distribute food in Kampala, the capital city. This is the third year that Pint has participated in the project.
Pint is the second of three linebackers the Broncos plan to get in the 2012 Recruiting Class. He is the 12th high school senior to commit to the Broncos already.

Boise State's Odds Have Changed
A week or 10 days ago, I told you I guessed Boise State's odds of winning a "national championship", based on the data inputted into EA Sports popular "NCAA Football" software were going to wind up at about 1 in 6. I am now at 69 simulations and Boise State finished #1 in 14 simulations. Last year, if memory serves me correctly, Boise State won in 13 of 100 simulations. We saw what happened in 2010 as Boise State let teams get back in games so 6-7% or so doesn't mean much if the players let inferior teams catch them.
When I get to 100, I will do a full report on all the games, the possible outcomes, outlook for each of Boise State's opponents, and a range of scenarios for Boise State's final season record.

Notes on Early Bronco Fall Practices
There are three specific things I'm noting in talking to people who have seen Boise State's practices.
1. The defensive line, the best the school has ever seen last year, is better this year and has more depth. They heard the talk that they couldn't hold Nevada last year when it counted. They have taken that criticism to heart and are eager to prove that won't happen this year...in any game.
2. The receivers are fired up to prove there's not going to be a drop-off with the departure of Austin Pettis and Titus Young. The buzz is that Matt Miller has been outstanding. The freshman receiver could make an impact this year. Troy Ware, Aaron Burks and tight end Gabe Linehan have also been impressive.
3. Malcolm Johnson, back with the team, could also make an impact this season. If Johnson can get up to speed with the Broncos' complicated offense and with the college game in general, Boise State might be able to redshirt Ajayi. Of course we won't know much more about that until later in fall camp. The counterpoint to that is with a guy as talented as Ajayi, do you really want to redshirt him or would you rather have him contribute towards Boise State's national championship run?

The Simulation Football League Playoffs
These four teams earned the right to meet in the Simulation Football League playoffs. The 2009 Broncos won the Boise State Division with an 11-1 record while the 2010 Broncos finished second at 9-3. Miami of Florida nearly capped a 12-0 season but lost to Alabama in the final weekend to finish 11-1. 2004 USC finished 9-3, in a tie with the 2005 Texas team, but defeated the Longhorns earlier in the season to win the tie-breaker.
Thus, it will be the 2009 Boise State team against USC and the 2010 Boise State team against Miami.
