Match 3

Match 3 is a new matching game on Blue Through and Through.  There are three columns below.  The first contains the name of a Boise State quarterback, the second column contains the name of a Boise State running back and the third column contains a Boise State receiver.  The object is to match the quarterback, the running back and the receiver that played in the same starting lineup.  There may be more than one match, so to get the correct answer, use a process of elimination so that in the end, you have five matches of three players each.

Early EA Sports Simulation Results

It took two simulations to tell Boise State fans what they wanted to hear.


I have run two simulations of EA Sports' popular video software NCAA Football.  In the past nine seasons, EA has predicted all but six Boise State games correctly.  I think the majority of the missed games have been more the fault of the Boise State team and not the software.


In one simulation, Boise State won their first eight games before a 24-17 loss to TCU.  The Broncos rebounded for three more wins to earn a Rose Bowl berth against Ohio State.  The Broncos lost that one 47-24 to finish the season 11-2.  In the second simulation, Boise State was victorious in all 12 regular season games, rising to the #1 ranking in the final week.  As a result, Boise State earned a berth to the mythical BCS "national championship" game.  The opponent?  Oklahoma!  Too much!  Boise State won the game 34-31.


I will have further simulations in the days and weeks to come.

First Football Commit

I was doing some research for the Tabs section of the blog and came across this nugget from 1999.  As Boise State was preparing for its first-ever bowl game on December 31, 1999 (which they won over Louisville), the Broncos received their first commit of the 2000 recruiting season when Donny Heck of Eagle High School gave his verbal.

Here we are still two months away from the start of football season and Boise State currently has 11 commitments.  How times have changed.

Leave No Doubt and Relentless Broncos Match Up

The final push for playoff spots begins in the Simulation Football League, which matches the past 10 Boise State football teams in one Division with the past 10 "national championship" teams in the other.  There is a 12-game schedule and we are approaching the ninth week.  


The battle between the 2002 and 2010 Boise State teams should be a good one; another to watch will be Miami of Florida taking on the 2003 Bronco team.

2009 Broncos, 2001 Hurricanes Continue to Set the Pace

The 2009 Broncos and 2001 Miami Hurricanes have opened up two-game leads in their respective divisions after eight weeks of play in the Simulation Football League.


The Broncos turned back a game Ohio State team 26-22 while the 2006 Fiesta Bowl Champion Boise State team fell for the third straight week, suffering a 38-28 defeat at the hands of Texas.  That meant that the 2010 Boise State team now is in control of its own destiny with four weeks to play.  


The 2009 Broncos play 2008 Boise State this week, then fish their season with games against the 2007, 2003 and 2006 Bronco teams.  The 2010 Broncos must face the Leave No Doubt Broncos next Saturday, then take on the 2005, 2007 and 2008 Boise State teams in succession.  After suffering three upsets in a row, the 2006 Fiesta Bowl team must win against the 2001, 2003, 2002 and 2009 Broncos to boost their playoff hopes.


In the Championship Division, USC and Texas will fight it out down the stretch for the wild card berth with Alabama and the 2008 Florida team close behind.  A Trojan loss to Miami caused the second-place tie.


Congratulations are in order for the 2001 Broncos, who downed the 2005 team to earn their first win of the season.

Barbara graduated from Boise State in 1991.  Recently, she was awarded the Albert Einstein Educator Fellowship by the Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education.  The program is administered by the U.S. Department of Energy.  Gardunia is a math teacher at Frank Church High School in Boise.

Vicki graduated from Boise State the same year I did (1986), with a degree in Communications.  Vicki was recently elected President of the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences in New Orleans.  Vicki has been the Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Social Work at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington.
