2009 Broncos, 2001 Hurricanes Continue to Set the Pace

The 2009 Broncos and 2001 Miami Hurricanes have opened up two-game leads in their respective divisions after eight weeks of play in the Simulation Football League.


The Broncos turned back a game Ohio State team 26-22 while the 2006 Fiesta Bowl Champion Boise State team fell for the third straight week, suffering a 38-28 defeat at the hands of Texas.  That meant that the 2010 Boise State team now is in control of its own destiny with four weeks to play.  


The 2009 Broncos play 2008 Boise State this week, then fish their season with games against the 2007, 2003 and 2006 Bronco teams.  The 2010 Broncos must face the Leave No Doubt Broncos next Saturday, then take on the 2005, 2007 and 2008 Boise State teams in succession.  After suffering three upsets in a row, the 2006 Fiesta Bowl team must win against the 2001, 2003, 2002 and 2009 Broncos to boost their playoff hopes.


In the Championship Division, USC and Texas will fight it out down the stretch for the wild card berth with Alabama and the 2008 Florida team close behind.  A Trojan loss to Miami caused the second-place tie.


Congratulations are in order for the 2001 Broncos, who downed the 2005 team to earn their first win of the season.

Barbara graduated from Boise State in 1991.  Recently, she was awarded the Albert Einstein Educator Fellowship by the Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education.  The program is administered by the U.S. Department of Energy.  Gardunia is a math teacher at Frank Church High School in Boise.

Congratulations to Vickie Rutledge Shields

Vicki graduated from Boise State the same year I did (1986), with a degree in Communications.  Vicki was recently elected President of the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences in New Orleans.  Vicki has been the Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Social Work at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington.

Where Are They Now? Ted Henry

Henry played left guard for Coach Lyle Smith on the 1956 and 1957 Bronco football teams.  Both were ranked in the JC Top 10 and the 1956 team was a perfect 8-0. 

Henry married his college sweetheart, Elsie, on September 6,1958.  He enrolled at Linfield College that fall and played middle guard for two seasons.  As a senior, Henry was named second team Little All-West Coast.  He earned a bachelor's degree from Linfield in December of 1960 and a master's from Oregon State.  He then was hired at a Hillsboro High School to be the freshman football coach and teach mathematics.  The following year, Henry was promoted to varsity line coach.  Hillsboro won the 1966 Oregon State Championship and went to the semi-finals in 1967. 

When his Hillsboro coach (Ad Rutschman) was hired by Linfield, Henry came to Linfield to teach math and be an assistant football coach for his mentor.  He was an assistant coach for 23 years from 1969 to 1991 and also served as the head wrestling coach for five years. 



In 2000, Henry was elected to the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame.  In his Linfield bio, Henry is praised as an individual of "competence and character".  He developed a relationship of trust, based on respect, credibility and integrity with players and fellow coaches.

"Henry is a very honest person with great respect, credibility and integrity," said Rutschman.  "He is very loyal, unselfish, dedicated and determined.  His strong relationship with players and coaches is built on trust."

After finishing his career in 1991, Henry continued to work at the school as director of the Linfield Academic Computing Center.  Of his coaching career, Henry said "I am most proud of being a part of a program that emphasized building character and teaching players how to be successful in life."

Congratulations, Ted, on your great career, and for living the kind of life that we all can be proud of.

2010 Broncos Down 2003 Boise State Team To Highlight Week 8 of the SFL

In a game matching the top two quarterbacks in the Simulation Football League, Kellen Moore threw four touchdown passes as the 2010 Boise State team pulled away in the second half to score a 41-19 win over the 2003 Broncos.


The Relentless Broncos got down to business early with a 71-yard pass from Moore to Geraldo Hiwat, setting up a Moore-to-Titus Young touchdown.

The Brick By Brick team had closed the margin to 17-10 when Tyler Jones booted a 34-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.  But Moore guided the 2010 Broncos on four scoring drives in the second half and the defense became a factor as George Iloka and Aaron Tevis snared Ryan Dinwiddie passes to end threats.

Moore finished 22-28 for 259 yards, throwing three scoring strikes to Titus Young.  Young moved into the SFL lead with 10 touchdown receptions on the season.  The Bronco defense was credited with six sacks of Dinwiddie, with Chase Baker getting two.

Tim Gilligan was able to catch five passes for 120 yards for the 2003 Broncos and David Mikell ran for 122 yards.


The win enabled the 2010 team to jump into second place as the rest of the league watched the 2006 Broncos fall for the third consecutive week.  The 2010 Broncos are 6-2 while the 2003 Broncos are now 4-4 after making an early run for the title.

2005 Texas 41, 2006 Boise State 38
Texas dealt another blow to the Fiesta Bowl Champions with a 41-38 victory this afternoon in Simulation Football League play.


In Johnson ran for 184 yards and two scores for Boise State as the Broncos piled up 261 yards rushing and 554 yards of total offense but couldn't punch it in when they needed.  Johnson went over the 1,000-yard mark for the season with 1,132.  Boise State lost for the third straight week after opening the season 5-0 and now find themselves in third place behind both the 2009 and 2010 Boise State teams.


 Boise State marched 64 yards to answer a Texas score with Johnson running it in from three yards out.  Texas came roaring back with Ramonce Taylor's short run and a 9-yard pass from Vince Young to Quan Cosby.


Thinking they had gained the upper hand, the Longhorns kicked the ball off the Boise State.  On the first play from scrimmage, however, Johnson burst through the Texas line for 74 yards, finally getting horse-collared at the 4.  Jon Helmandollar took it in from there as IJ had to have his neck adjusted.


Texas would come back scarcely over a minute later as Young found a streaking Billy Pitman on the sideline for a 78-yard bomb.  The Longhorns' David Pino kicked a late field goal and once again Texas had a big lead 31-14.  Texas was going to put the game away on the first drive of the second half but Marty Tadman stepped in front of Pittman and took the ball to the Texas 48.  Jared Zabransky hit Legedu Naanee later in the drive as Boise State pulled closer.  Young found Pittman again for 45 yards on the next possession and Jamaal Charles scored from seven yards out to put Texas up 38-21.


Offensive Coordinator Bryan Harsin called a screen pass to his tight end and Boise State capitalized beautifully as Derek Schouman turned the play into a 71-yard score.  "I was impressed by that call by Harsin," Texas Coach Mack Brown said afterward.  "That guy's going to go places."  The Longhorns got to Boise State's 42 on their next drive but Young fumbled the snap.  Zabransky had the Broncos on the move with a 39-yard pass to Drisan James but Boise State had to settle for a 20-yard field goal from Anthony Montgomery.


After forcing a punt, the Broncos drove 78 yards for the tying score as Ian Johnson ran untouched into the end zone from the 8 with 6:45 left.  Young's 31-yard draw play keyed a seven-play Texas drive, leading to David Pino's 30-yard field goal.


Boise State had a fourth-and-seven on the Texas 42 but the Longhorns held.  The Broncos would get one more chance but three Zabransky incompletions ended the game.


Zabransky had one of his better games of the SFL season with 17-28 passing for 293 yards.    Jamaal Charles led Texas with 78 yards rushing.


Texas took advantage of a USC loss to once again tie the Trojans for second with a 6-2 mark.




2009 Boise State 26, 2002 Ohio State 22
Jeremy Avery ran for 135 yards and a score and caught three passes for 51 more yards as Boise State put away their rivals from Ohio State 26-22.


The two teams were knotted at 13 at intermission and traded field goals in the first two drives of the third quarter.  With 7:56 left in the third, Texas punted and on the first play following, Avery ripped off a 47-yard run to key a 13-play, 62-yard scoring drive, capped by Avery's three-yard touchdown run.  Ohio State came back with Mike Nugent's fourth field goal to make it 23-19, but Kyle Brotzman booted his third three-pointer to make it 26-19 with 10:55 remaining.


Quarterback Craig Krenzel led Ohio State back down the field once again and Nugent converted field goal number five.  Kellen Moore led his team down the field to the OSU 27 with 2:21 left.  Faced with a fourth and two, the Broncos elected to go for it but were stopped short.  Ohio State drove the Bronco fans crazy with a drive to the 29.  But, on a fourth-and-six, linebacker Tommy Smith shot through a gap and sacked Krenzel and Boise State could finally breathe a sigh of relief.


Pettis and Titus Young each grabbing five passes.  Krenzel had his greatest success of the SFL season, going 20-30 for 310 yards.  Maurice Clarett gained 87 yards for Ohio State, but the Broncos kept him out of the end zone.




2001 Miami of Florida 37, 2004 USC 20
Ken Dorsey threw for 376 yards and a touchdown, Clinton Portis ran for 132 yards and two scores and Todd Sievers booted five field goals as Miami won its seventh straight game with a 37-20 victory over the National Champions from USC.


Dorsey was 21-34 in engineering the victory, but his defense did their part with four sacks of talented USC quarterback Matt Leinart.  Had it not been for that, Leinart would have likely done more damage than he already did, going 31-41 for 339 yards.  Dominque Byrd (5-88) and Steve Smith (5-73) led 10 Trojan receivers while Reggie Bush had his best afternoon of the SFL season (92 yards) and LenDale White added 60.

2007 Boise State 29, 2004 Boise State 13

The 2007 Broncos continued to disrupt playoff hopes.  Last week the effectively ended the dreams of the 2002 team and now they knocked off the Liberty Bowl team 29-13.  

Kyle Brotzman kicked five field goals to lead the Hawai'i Bowl team, which is now 3-5 in the SFL season.  Taylor Tharp enjoyed a great afternoon, going 27-36 for 344 yards and a touchdown in outplaying his predecessor, Jared Zabransky, who was just 11-22 for 129 yards with a TD but also an interception.  Jeremy Childs hauled in seven Tharp passes for 93 yards and Sherm Blaser had three receptions for 82 yards, including a 55-yard scoring play.  

Ian Johnson led all rushers with 24 carries for 99 yards and a score while Lee Marks gained 96 yards on 17 tries.  The 2007 Broncos controlled the clock with 35:41 of posssession to 24:19 for the Liberty Bowl Broncos, who fell to 2-6 with the loss.

2009 Alabama 57, 2003 LSU 15
Mark Ingram ran for 197 yards and three scores and caught four passes for 47 as Alabama blitzed LSU 57-15 this afternoon.


LSU had cut the margin to 14-9 at the end of the first quarter but the Tide pulled away with Ingram scoring from 60 and 40 in the second half.  The talented Crimson Tide tailback went over the 1,000-yard mark and now has 1,081.  Meanwhile, the Alabama defense held Justin Vincent to 38 yards on 15 carries.


Alabama is now 5-3 and kept its playoff hopes alive while the Tigers slipped to 2-6.

2008 Boise State 42, 2002 Boise State 28

Titus Young hauled in a 74-yard touchdown pass from Kellen Moore on the opening drive of the second half, leading to a 42-28 win for the 2008 Broncos over their 2002 counterparts.

The 2008 Bronco defense established the tone early and Hunter White picked off 2002 quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie on the first play of the game.  Five plays later, Moore hit Jeremy Childs at the goal line and he fell into the end zone.

Moore threw four touchdown passes in going 22-33 for 366 yards for the winners.  Childs continued to shine this SFL season with seven catches for 87 yards and two scores.  Jeremy Avery led his team with 79 yards and a touchdown while Ian Johnson had 58 yards and a score.

Brock Forsey picked up 109 yards and scored four touchdowns in a superb performance.  Dinwiddie was 23-35 for 340 yards, with Billy Wingfield (five catches for 105 yards) and Jay Swillie (4-65) being his favorite targets.


The Poinsettia Bowl Broncos kept their faint playoff hopes alive with the win.  Both teams are tied for fourth with 4-4 records.

2001 Boise State 34, 2005 Boise State 31

Nick Calaycay's 40-yard field goal in overtime gave the 2001 Boise State team a 34-31 win over their disappointed 2005 opponents.  The thrilled Bronco team celebrated jubilantly on the sidelines after their first victory of the season.

The two evenly-matched teams were tied 17-17 at the end of the third quarter and traded four touchdowns in a wild fourth quarter to force the overtime.

The 2001 Broncos scored first on a 20-yard pass from Ryan Dinwiddie to Jay Swillie.  A 64-yard drive helped by a unnecessary roughness penalty and a 23-yard pass from Jared Zabransky to Jerard Rabb for the 2005 Boise State team evened the score when Lee Marks ran in from five yards out with 9:10 remaining in the half.  Jared Zabransky hit Rabb with a 21-yard score later in the quarter and Coach Dan Hawkins' team was trying to make it 21-7 but Drisan James fumbled on his own 37 after catching a Zabransky pass.  That led to a Calaycay field goal as time expired in the half.

The teams traded missed field goals then, with 7:24 left in the third quarter, Dinwiddie's passing and a 28-yard run from Brock Forsey gave the 2001 Broncos a first-and-goal at the four.  Donny Heck scored on the next play to give the 2001 Broncos a 17-14 lead.  The 2005 team came right back as Lee Marks netted a 44-yard run and Zabransky's 15-yard scramble gave them a first-and goal.  Three running plays later, Anthony Montgomery had to kick a field goal.

The 2001 team came back on the ensuing possession, driving to the 2005 14-yard line.  But Dinwiddie's pass was intercepted by Marty Tadman who ran it all the way to the 26.  Three plays later, Z hit Rabb for an 11-yard score.  The 2005 Broncos forced a punt, but were unable to capitalize when Montgomery's 47-yard field goal was wide right.

Given new hope with nine minutes left, the 2001 Broncos came back to tie the game at 24, with the key play being a 36-yard Forsey rumble and Dinwiddie fired an 18-yard scoring play to Billy Wingfield.  Zabransky led the '05 Boise State team to a quick score as Lee Marks ran it in from 17 yards with 5:03 left.  David Mikell put the 2001 team in excellent possession on the ensuing kickoff when he found a crease and ran 74 yards to the 14 yard-line.  Brock Forsey bulled over from the 1 four plays later to once again tie the game at 31.  

The 2001 Broncos got the ball back again with 1:43 left.  Forsey shocked the defense with a 57-yard run to give his team a chance for the lead but Calaycay's kick was wide left.  

The 2005 Broncos got the ball to begin overtime and moved to the 11.  But, Antwain Carter fumbled.  A couple of plays later, Calaycay redeemed himself by booting the ball true for the game-winner.

Forsey finished with 149 yards on 15 carries while Dinwiddie was 21-32 passing for 335 yards.  Marks had an osutanding game for the 2005 team with 159 yards and two touchdowns.  

2008 Florida 34, 2010 Auburn 18
Jeffery Dempts ran for 85 yards and caught a TD and the 2008 Gator defense did the rest as Florida topped the lowly Tigers 34-18.


Tim Tebow was effective, going 10-13 for 207 yards and the touchdown to Demps.  Lorenzo Edwards, Torrey Davis and Lerentee McCray recorded sacks of Auburn quarterback Cam Newton.


Coach Urban Meyer's team was able to remain in contention for a playoff berth with the win.  Florida is now 4-4, tied with Alabama in fourth place in the Championship Division.  Auburn slipped to 1-7.


2007 LSU 13, 2006 Florida 10
LSU ran out to a 13-0 lead after three quarters, then held on for dear life as the 2006 Gators tried to avoid the upset.


Florida rallied for 10 fourth-quarter points and tried to pull out the game in the closing minutes but a Chris Leak pass was picked off by Kirston Pittman.


Jacob Hester (21 carries for 101 yards and a score) led the way for the Tigers, who recorded just their this win in eight tries.  Florida fell to 3-5 with the defeat.


The Florida ground game was ineffective, gaining just 106 yards, putting more pressure on quarterback Leak.  Leak was 26-41 for 280 yards and the costly interception.
