2009 Broncos Move Into First-Place Tie With 2006 Broncos

Right now, it appears to be a three-team race in both the Boise State Division and the Championship Division.  A costly 20-9 loss for the 2003 Broncos at the hands of the upset-minded 2005 squad dealt the Brick-By-Brick Broncos a setback that will be tough to recover from, especially since they have games against the 2010 Boise State team and the 2001 Miami team in back-to-back games coming up.


The Week Seven Standings show the 2009 Broncos in first place with a 6-1 mark; they lead the division with 311 points.  The 2006 and 2010 Boise State teams are within striking distance at 5-2--the '06 squad leads the division in defense, allowing just 154 points (22 points a game) thus far.


Miami of Florida continues to cruise along with a 7-0 mark.  The Hurricanes lead the SFL in both points (375) and points allowed (100), making for an incredible 39.3 average margin of victory.  USC (6-1) and Texas (5-2) trail.

2010 Broncos Stun 2006 Fiesta Bowl Champions to Highlight Week Seven Play

2010 Boise State 41, 2006 Boise State 7
Quarterback Kellen Moore tossed four touchdown passes and the 2010 Boise State (5-1) routed the proud 2006 Fiesta Bowl Champions this afternoon 41-7 in a key Simulation Football League game.  The 2006 team could not score until 3:37 remaining in the half when Jared Zabransky hit running back Ian Johnson for a 49-yard catch and run, and they would not find the end zone for the rest of the game.

Moore constantly kept the great 2006 defense off balance, finding eight receivers from various distances, connecting on 27-of-37 passes for 347 yards.  Titus Young had his best game of the SFL season with six receptions for 83 yards and 2 TD's while Austin Pettis had six catches for 80 yards and another score.  Doug Martin kept his legs churning on the ground for 158 yards and a score to aid the 2010 team's cause.  With the performance, Martin became the first rusher in the SFL to top 1,000 yards for the season--he now has 1,055.

"That guy (Moore) is something else," middle linebacker Korey Hall said.  "I'll be honest--we didn't know what he was going to do out there," safety Marty Tadman added. 

Ian Johnson topped the 2006 Broncos, but he found the 2010 Bronco defense tougher than the Oklahoma one that confronted him in the 2006 Fiesta Bowl.  Johnson finished with 64 yards on 20 carries.

"This was a great win for our guys," Coach Chris Petersen said of his team.  "To beat a team of that caliber--I'm just so happy for the student-athletes that have put in so much work preparing for the game."


2005 Texas 23, 2009 Alabama 20
Vince Young threw for two touchdowns and Jamaal Charles ran for 108 yards and another score as Texas turned back challenger Alabama 23-20. 



Young enjoyed a great game with 11-13 passing for 205 yards and 36 yards rushing to lead the Longhorn attack.  Mark Ingram had another solid game (106 yards and two touchdowns rushing) for the Crimson Tide.

This was a pivotal game in the race for a playoff berth and will go a long ways towards Texas's title hopes.


2001 Miami of Florida 40, 2010 Auburn 7
The wind continues to blow at the back of the 2001 Miami Hurricanes.  Miami won handily over the hapless 2010 Auburn team this afternoon, 40-7.




Clinton Portis showed no ill effects from an injury that kept him out of much of last week's game, running for touchdowns of 5 and 58 yards in the first quarter.  Portis finished with 127 yards for Miami.  Cam Newton's 11-yard pass in the second quarter for six provided Boise State with their lone offensive highlight.

It was a long day for the Tigers, as Newton threw four interceptions (with Edward Reed jumping in on two of them) and Michael Dyer was held to 24 yards rushing, his lowest total of the SFL season.  The Auburn line allowed six sacks, as Maurice Sikes incredibly had four of them by himself.

Quarterback Ken Dorsey completed 24-of-44 passes for 278 yards and a score, with favorite target Ethenic Sands (5-61) doing most of the damage.  "It was important for me to spot my receivers," Dorsey said.  "That defense was too good to be one-dimensional.  We knew Clinton was fine but when they started crowding the box to stop him, I opened it up a little bit."



2008 Florida 49, 2004 Boise State 46
In the most thrilling game of the Simulation Football League so far this season, the 2008 Florida team outlasted the 2004 Broncos 49-46 in five overtimes.







Tim Tebow's 10-yard pass to Louis Murphy gave the Gators the thrilling win over a talented but disappointed 2004 Bronco team that never gave up.  It was a dramatic final 7 1/2 minutes of regulation as Percy Harvin's 38-yards run gave Florida a 24-17 lead.  Boise State drove down the field with Tyler Jones kicking a 43-yard field goal to close the deficit to 24-20.  Florida hoped to run out the clock but a drive stalled at the Boise State 21-yard line and Jonathan Phillips kicked his second field goal of the game to make it 27-20 with 27 seconds left.


Florida (4-3) kicked a squib kick, but Chris Carr returned the ball to the 50 to put his team in great position.  Two plays later, Jared Zabransky's miracle "Hail Mary" pass to Lawrence Bady, who outjumped four Gator defenders in the end zone, tied the game with four seconds left.


Each team was held to a field goal in the first overtime.  Tebow ran around right end for 25 yards on the first play of the second overtime, but the Broncos got the equalizer as Zabransky found tight end Derek Schouman for a nine-yard pass in the end zone.  Each team matched field goals in both the third and fourth overtimes.  Tyler Jones kicked his sixth field goal of the game from 36 yards out to give Boise State a 46-43 lead in the final overtime but Florida was able to get six as the two exhausted teams headed off the field.

"I think I may retire soon," Gator coach Urban Meyer said.  "I don't know how much more of this I can take."


Johnathan Phillips kicked five field goals for Florida.  Percy Harvin topped the Gators with 67 yards and a TD while Chris Rainey added 61 yards and a score.


Lee Marks went over the 100-yard mark (30-106 and a TD) for Boise State while Zabransky was on target with 23 of 33 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns.  Boise State outgained Florida 499-354 but could not punch it in the end zone when it mattered.


"The guys showed a lot of heart," Boise State head coach Dan Hawkins said.  We felt we did everything to win the game; our hats off to Coach Urban Meyer and the Florida team."




2004 USC 31, 2008 Boise State 28
It has been a surprising last two weeks in the SFL.  A 2008 Boise State team fresh off an upset of the 2006 Fiesta Bowl Champion team went down this afternoon to the 2004 Trojans 31-28.



The 2004 USC team caught the Broncos napping as they ran out to 21-0 and 28-7 leads on three Matt Leinart touchdown passes. LenDale White's four-yard run, his second TD of the game with 14 seconds left, gave the 2001 team a 28-7 lead at the half.  Kellen Moore attempted to rally the Broncos with touchdown passes to Kyle Efaw and Vinny Perretta, the latter coming with 2:38 left in the game.


The 2008 Broncos were out of timeouts, however, and elected to try an onside kick which failed and the Trojans ran out the clock.

"It just goes to show you what can happen from week to week," said Bronco Coach Chris Petersen.  "We coaches preach the importance of playing four full quarters and taking every opponent seriously and this is why we do that."


Leinart threw for 297 yards and three scores (23-32) in leading the win while White helped control the clock with 127 yards rushing.  Moore finished 20-35 for 241 yards for the 2008 Broncos while Ian Johnson ran for 95 yards and two TD's in defeat.


2005 Boise State 20, 2003 Boise State 9
The 2005 Broncos won't finish among the leaders in the SFL, but they seem to enjoy their role as spoiler.  This afternoon, they no doubt squashed the playoff hopes of the 2003 Boise State team that was playing excellent of late.




It was defense that won this one, as the 2005 Broncos allowed just 353 total yards.  Lee Marks (38 yard) and Ian Johnson (44 yards) provided the only touchdowns with Tyler Jones providing all the scoring (three field goals) for the 2003 Boise State team.  Marks was able to register 85 yards on just 15 carries while Johnson finished with 61 on 14 carries.  David Mikell led the 2003 team with 81 rushing yards.

"This was a big win for us--I wanted to show that we could beat Dinwiddie and we did," said winning quarterback Jared Zabransky.

With the score 20-9 and five minutes remaining, quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie had the 2003 team on the 35-yard line of the 2005 Broncos, but Colt Brooks shot through and sacked Dinwiddie on fourth down to end the threat. 


2009 Boise State 38, 2001 Boise State 28
The 2009 Broncos kept their SFL hopes alive this afternoon with a 38-28 win over the 2001 team. 

Led by Ryan Dinwiddie's two touchdown passes (to Rocky Atkinson and Jeb Putzier), the '01 team had upset on their minds with a 21-14 lead at the 8:33 mark of the second quarter.  But Kellen Moore calmly guided his team down the field on the next two possessions with TD passes to Austin Pettis and Chris Potter to give the 2008 Broncos a 28-21 halftime advantage.  Moore tossed a pass to running back Doug Martin in the flat that the durable back took in from 18 yards to extend the margin to 14.  Brock Forsey came right back with a touchdown with 9:24 left in the game but the 2001 Broncos could not do anything after that.

Moore was a sensational 29-35 for 341 yards and 4 TD's for the game, distributing the ball to nine receivers.  Titus Young (6-66), Pettis (6-64 and 2 touchdowns) and Tyler Shoemaker (3-69) all benefited from Moore's precision passing.  Dinwiddie was 20-32 for 247 yards and 2 scores and Forsey accumulated 144 yards on the ground but the 2009 defense held when it mattered.

"We think we can still win this thing," said Young.  "This was an important win for us."


The 2009 Broncos are now 6-1 on the season while the 2001 team is still looking for that first victory.


2007 Boise State 51, 2002 Boise State 41
The Leave No Doubt Broncos are regarded as having one of the finest seasons in Boise State history, and the team thought they could parlay that into a playoff berth in the Simulation Football League.

Not so fast, said the 2007 team in showing that, even though they lost a few games in the season, they were still an improved Boise State team from five years previous.  The Hawai'i Bowl team led all but a few minutes of the contest, although the 2002 Broncos kept it close.  Ian Johnson's five-yard scamper into the end zone provided the '07 Boise State team with a 10-7 lead with 3:03 left in the first quarter and the 2002 Broncos would never lead after that.




It was too much Ian Johnson (28 carries for 173 yards and 3 touchdowns) and too much Jeremy Avery (44 yards rushing with a touchdown and 3 catches for 34 more yards).  The duo combined for three second-quarter touchdowns to open up a 31-14 lead, one of Johnson's on a 45-yard run to daylight.  But to their credit, Coach Dan Hawkins' 2002 team didn't give up.  Quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie led them on an 80-yard drive culminating in a Brock Forsey touchdown with 30 seconds left to salvage the half.

Dinwiddie and crew got the ball back to open the second half and Dinwiddie once again led them on a long drive (this time from 84 yards), spotting receiver Tim Gilligan in the end zone for a 7-yard pass to pull the Broncos within four at 31-27.  The 2007 Boise State team came right back, however, with a drive that ate up 4:46 and ended in Johnson's third touchdown.  Then, after an '02 drive stalled, Taylor Tharp fired his second touchdown of the afternoon to Vinny Perretta. 

Still, the 2002 Broncos did not surrender and Dinwiddie found receiver Jay Swillie for two fourth-quarter touchdowns to make it 48-41.  Kyle Brotzman booted home a 48-yard field goal on the next possession, however, to ice the game.

The 2007 Broncos (2-5) charted 591 yards of total offense to 429 for the 2002 team.  Rushing was the biggest difference between the two as Johnson and company ran for 221 yards to just 137 for the 2002 Broncos.  Forsey did manage to crack the 100-yard mark with 102 yards.  Dinwiddie had another outstanding game with 22-29 for 292 and 4 touchdowns while Tharp had one of his best games of the SFL season (28-38 for 370 yards and 2 scores).  Jeremy Childs continued to find no match for him in the secondaries of the league, hauling in 8 Tharp aerials for 132 yards.  Swillie led the 2002 Broncos with 4 catches for 72 yards while Forsey added 4 receptions for 44.

"You know, our losses in 2007 to Washington, Hawai'i and East Carolina stung," said Tharp.  "This is a quality win for us."


2006 Florida 21, 2002 Ohio State 17
Chris Leak led Florida on two touchdown drives in the final five minutes as Florida stole one from Ohio State 21-17.  The result left the two teams tied for fifth place in the Championship Division with 3-4 records.



Ted Ginn had electrified the Buckeye crowd with an 89-yard punt return that temporarily changed momentum in the third quarter.  Mike Nugent added a field goal later in the quarter as Ohio State went into the locker room with a 10-7 lead.




Craig Krenzel's pass to Michael Jenkins extended the lead to 17-7 with 9:59 remaining in the game.  But Leak's passing and running led the comeback, as Leak's 9-yard run with 4:51 left made it 17-14.  The Gator defense stiffened, giving their offense another opportunity, and Leak and company made the most of it, driving 75 yards for the game winner, a 7-yard pass from Leak to Andre Caldwell, with 1:04 left.

Leak finished 21-28 for 333 yards and two touchdowns, as five Florida receivers (Cornelius Ingram 3-66, Percy Harvin 4-62, DeShawn Wynn 2-59, Dallas Baker 4-58 and Jemalle Cornelius 4-57) were over 50 yards.  

Maurice Clarett was the star for Ohio State with 77 yards rushing.


2003 LSU 34, 2007 LSU 3
In a battle of "national champions" from Baton Rouge, this one wasn't close.  The 2003 Tigers pulverized the 2007 team 34-3 this afternoon in the SFL.

Ryan Gaudet ran for scores of 39 and 30, Joseph Addai rambled in from 53 yards and Justin Vincent added another rushing touchdown as the 2003 LSU team won the battle at the line of scrimmage.  While they racked up 320 rushing yards, the '03 Tiger defense held Jacob Hester to 56 yards and the 2007 team to just 73.  Meanwhile, Lionel Turner and Sammy Joseph snared interceptions of Matt Flynn, who was just 13-32 for the game. 

Addai topped the 2003 team, now 2-5 on the season, with 138 yards rushing while Vincent had 77. 

Boise State Commit Nick Patti Qualifies for Elite 11 Quarterback Camp

The endless series of firsts for Boise State continues.

Boise State recruit Nick Patti has been chosen to compete in the Elite 11 quarterback competition this month in Malibu, California.  Patti will enter a five-day competition with 23 other quarterbacks in Malibu to crown the 2011 Elite 11 Most Valuable Player.  The 24 QB's were chosen from more than 1,000 that were evaluated by the Elite 11 selection committee.

Patti comes to Boise from Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Florida and hopes to join the Bronco team for spring football next year.

Mountain West Welcomes Boise State with Open Arms

Whereas many schools and fans of the Western Athletic Conference bad-mouthed Boise State, the Broncos are getting quite a welcome as they enter a new conference and a new era.

The Mountain (Cable One channel 329 and DirecTV channel 616) will feature three half-hour shows dedicated to welcoming Boise State.  "Boise State Football, an Epic Ascent" will get things started tonight (Friday) at 7 p.m. Mountain Time.  That introduction will be followed by "Beyond the Blue:  Boise State Athletics" at 7:30 and "Welcome to Boise", a show dedicated to the community and university at 8 p.m.

The welcome mat is further extended Monday night as "Stories of the Mountain West" will feature Boise State at 7 p.m.  An Olympic sports salute to Boise State will be featured on "The Mountain Sports Report" at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, with "Around the Mountain", featuring an interview with Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and "It's a Numbers Game" Friday at 5:30 p.m.

In addition, some of Boise State's recent football games (Utah from 2006, Idaho from 2007 and Oregon from 2008) will be featured on the network.

Lindy's Selects Three Broncos for All-America Football Team

Offensive tackle Nate Potter was tabbed as a First-Team All-American by Lindy's, a preseason college football publication.  Quarterback Kellen Moore and Billy Winn were chosen for the second team. 

Running back Doug Martin, defensive end Shea McClellin and safety George Iloka were selected along with the three for All-Mountain West honors.  Wide receiver Tyler Shoemaker and center Thomas Byrd were honored as Second-Team All-MWC preseason players.

Malcolm Holland to Play for Los Angeles Dodgers Organization

Malcolm Holland was a late pickup for Boise State in the 2011 Recruiting Class, but due to a fantastic baseball season, Holland was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers and has decide to pursue a career in baseball instead.

Holland's decision will likely free up another scholarship for this season.

Boise State Lands Services of Texas Linebacker

We may all have to begin speaking with a Southern accent to make our Texas friends happy.  Blue Through and Through told you that Klein High School linebacker Ben Weaver (6-1, 225) was visiting Boise, and now we have learned that Weaver has chosen to take his skills to Boise State.







Weaver chose Boise State over offers from 14 other schools, including Texas Tech, Utah (which the Pac-10 mistakenly chose over Boise State for expansion), Arizona, Navy, Louisville, Air Force and California.  He also had interest from TCU, Oklahoma, Purdue and Texas A&M.


Weaver made the Dave Campbell Magazine's Super Texas Second Team.





In fact, Weaver's Sooner ties run deep.  His sister currently goes to OU and his mother graduated from the Norman, Oklahoma school.  He said that he grew up going to Sooner games and dreamed of playing there.  But he decided to go to Boise State instead.
