Bronco Men 5th at NCAA Regional, Will Play Waiting Game

SEATTLE, Washington--The Boise State men's cross country team finished fifth this afternoon at the NCAA West Regionals.

Boise State finished with 137 points, calculated by adding up the finishes of the top six Broncos. Washington won the title with 63 points to 83 for Stanford. Oregon finished 3rd with 99 points to 125 for Washington State.
Coach Corey Ihmels' team will now have to wait to see if they earn an at-large berth in next week's NCAA National Championships in Louisville, Kentucky. Only the top two teams at each of the country's nine regionals are guaranteed a spot, and there will be 13 at-large teams selected. Boise State was hurt today losing to unranked Washington State.


Michael Vennard finished 17th to lead the Bronco men with a time of 31:29.8. Chandler Austin was 26th (31:46.6), followed by Louis McAfee at #28 (31:48.1), Elijah Armstrong 30th in 31:49.9, Rhys Park 36th with a time of 31:55.7 and Addison DeHaven (31:55.7). Oregon All-American Edward Cheserek won the individual title with a time of 30:43.2.


The selection of the at-large teams will take place tomorrow.

Ostrander Wins, Bronco Women Take 2nd, Men 3rd at MW Cross Country Championships

Boise State's Allie Ostrander dominated a field that included six of the nation's Top 15 women's runners to win the Mountain West championship today in Reno.  Ostrander was named Outstanding Female Athlete, Freshman of the Year, and All-Mountain West Conference.

Ostrander led the Broncos to a second-place finish behind New Mexico, the #1 team in the nation.  Brenna Peloquin was 9th and Anna Holdiman finished 11th to both earn second-team All-MW.

Michael Vennard's fifth-place finish helped the Bronco men finish third behind champion Air Force and second-place Colorado State.  Elijah Armstrong, Chandler Austin and Rhys Park all earned second-team All-Mountain West.

Next year, the MW Championships are in Boise, and Bronco fans are already buzzing with excitement to see the Bronco team live.

Boise State Stops UNLV In Four Sets

BOISE, Idaho--The Boise State volleyball team spotted UNLV a first-set win, then exploded for a 22-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-19 victory in front of a spirited packed crowd in Bronco Gym.  After a tough road trip to open Mountain West Conference play, the Lady Broncos returned home for the first time in nearly a month and posted their first conference win of the season.

UNLV was ahead most of the first set, but the Broncos did battle back to take a 22-19 lead before the Rebels scored six unanswered points.  The Rebels used tenacious net play to gain the early advantage, with a seemingly tight Bronco team making several uncharacteristic errors.

Coach Shawn Garus' team evened the score in set number two.  Boise State jumped to a commanding 14-4 lead behind stepped-up blocking.  Maddy O'Donnell and freshman Phoebe Bell led the way for the Broncos in a 25-16 victory.

The Lady Broncos continued the momentum in the third set, grabbing a 10-6 lead which forced Rebel coach Cindy Fredrick to call a time out.  The TO did little to stem the tide, as Boise State again featured great defense led by Bell and Kaitlin Oliver.  Oliver was on fire in the set, and Katelyn Kinghorn chipped in to fire up her team with one of the best matches of her career.

Boise State once again gained the upper hand in the fourth set, going up 14-10.  Kinghorn, who was matched up several times with the UNLV setter, led the way at the net with blocks for the Broncos.  Although UNLV keyed on leading attacker Sierra Nobley, the Bronco sophomore came to life with an excellent fourth set as Boise State won the set 25-19 to wrap up the match.

Boise State advanced to 9-6 and 1-2 in Mountain West play while the Rebels slipped to 8-6 and 1-1.

Senior setter Sarah Baugh recorded 54 assists to pass Bronco assistant coach Breann Crowell (2009-2011) for fifth all-time in career assists with 3,076. 

Oliver finished with 17 kills and 4 blocks while Kinghorn had 14 kills and Nobley 13.  Maddi Osburn had 25 digs to lead the Broncos.  Boise State outhit the Rebels 20.8% to 9.7%, unusually low numbers for both teams.  

Ceannia Kincade, cousin of four-time Olympic gold medal sprinter Michael Johnson,led UNLV with 13 kills while Bree Hamell had 10.  

Boise State hosts Fresno State Saturday afternoon at 2 in Bronco Gym.  Parking will be available on the fourth and fifth floors of the Lincoln Parking Garage.

Boise State sophomore outside hitter Sierra Nobley returns home this weekend as the Lady Bronco volleyball team takes on Northern Arizona, UC Riverside and host Grand Canyon in Phoenix.

Nobley, a graduate and star at Horizon High School in nearby Scottsdale, Arizona, has led Boise State in kills every match this season.  She broke the school record for kills per set last season with 4.08 and ranks third for points (480.5) in a single season.  Nobley earned not only Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, but a spot on the All-Mountain West team as well.  Nobley also was named American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Region Honorable Mention and earned Academic All-Mountain West and MW Scholar Athlete for maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or above.

Bronco coach Shawn Garus has been impressed with Nobley's improvement in defense.  Last week in a key five-set win over North Texas, Nobley recorded a career-high 20 digs to go with 26 kills.

Nobley is off to a roaring start this fall, leading the Broncos with 4.83 kills per set and points (5.25 per set), is third on the team with 70 digs and has 14 assists, 13 blocks and 6 service aces.

Bronco teammate, senior setter Sarah Baugh, is confident that when she gets the ball to Nobley, Sierra will knock it home.

At Horizon, Nobley led her team to four consecutive conference titles and berths in the large-school state tournament, reaching the state championship three times and capturing the championship in 2010 and 2012.

Boise State has matches at 4 p.m. Mountain Time today and tomorrow against NAU and UC Riverside, before meeting Grand Canyon Sunday afternoon at 2.

Boise State Volleyball Team Gets Early Lead in Season Opener

The Lady Broncos scored a 25-10 win in the first set tonight in Portland against Portland State in the Northwest Challenge.  The going was much tougher in the second set, as the Viking grabbed an early 13-7.  Slowly but surely, Boise State rallied and came out on top 28-26.  Third set about to begin.

Jeremy Kipp Hired as Boise State Swimming and Diving Coach

Boise--Boise State Athletic Director Curt Apsey today announced the hiring of Jeremy Kipp as the school's new swimming and diving coach.  Kipp, who has 16 years of experience, including the past eight at USC, takes over from Kristin Hill, who resigned after eight years at Boise State.

“We are very excited to welcome Jeremy into the Bronco Family as the next head coach of our swimming and diving program,” Apsey said. “Jeremy’s body of work over the past 16 years has helped elevate the swim programs at both USC and UC Santa Barbara to great heights. We look forward to his leadership in continuing to build upon the winning tradition of Boise State women’s swimming and diving.”

Kipp worked primarily with the Trojan sprinters, directed the recruting for the men's team and assisted with recruiting for the women's program.  

Hill helped launch the Bronco swimming and diving team in 2006, and within four seasons, built the team into conference champions.  Boise State captured championships in 2010 and 2011 in the Western Athletic Conference, then continued that tradition with conference titles in the Mountain West in 2012 and 2014.  The Bronco women, who placed second in the Mountain West last season, return six of the seven swimmers who captured individual titles at the Mountain West Championships.

“I am both excited and humbled that Curt Apsey and his staff have chosen me to lead the Boise State women’s swimming and diving program,” Kipp said. “It’s hard to believe that the program has had only nine years in existence, which speaks to the excellent support and culture ingrained in the Boise State athletic department. Obviously, Kristin Hill had a large part of that success and I aim at pushing the program forward on all levels from performance in the classroom, pool and civic engagement. My wife Suzy and sons Jonathan and Patrick are proud to join the Bronco family and looking forward to calling Boise our home.”

In his eight years at USC, Kipp helped the Trojan women to seven consecutive Top 10 finishes at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.  USC is one of only four schools to achieve six straight Top Eight finishes, including third-place showings in 2011 and 2012.  The Trojan women won 12 individual national championships and 52 individual and 20 relay All-America honors during Kipp's tenure.

The USC men have scored five straight Top 10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, finishing fourth last season.   

Before securing the job at USC, Kipp spent eight seasons at UC Santa Barbara coaching the middle distance and stroke groups.  Over 20 of his Gaucho swimmers advanced to the Naitonal Championships, with one earning All-America honors.
