Texas Tech Wins Doubles Point
9-8 tie-breaker at #1. Boise State in same position as yesterday.
Bettles & Sereke Now Lead 8-7
The British Broncos have battled back and lead 8-7. Each team has won one doubles match so this is the decider.
Patton & Sears Win
Garrett & Scott got it done, winning 9-7. Now all eyes on the #1 court.
Bettles & Sereke Lose a Break
The #1 doubles team trails 7-6. Patton & Sears lead 8-7, no breaks at #2 doubles.
Mitchell & Pogostkin Lose
Texas Tech has won the first doubles match at #3, 9-7 over Toby Mitchell & Filipp Pogostkin.
Boise State Battles Back in Blue Gray Championship
Bettles & Sereke have gotten back to even (6-6) at #1 doubles. Toby Mitchell and Fillipp Pogostkin also have gotten a break and are tied at 7. Garrett Patton & Scott Sears still holding serve, leading 6-5 at #2 doubles.
Wanderley and Zambon Get Break
Now a break at #3 doubles and Texas Tech is up 5-4 there. Bettles and Sereke continue to trail at #1 doubles 5-3.
Bettles & Sereke Trail
Apparently early misinformation from the Blue Gray. Bettles & Sereke do trail at #1 doubles 4-2. The other two doubles teams are both holding serve.
Blue Gray Switch
At first, we heard that Andy Bettles and Nathan Sereke had a break at #1 doubles. Now, the score has been reversed and they trail 4-1. Which is it? This isn't tough.
They Are Underway In Montgomery
After Boise State's women took it to Michigan State, the Bronco men are now in action in the championship match of the Blue Gray Tennis Classic vs. Texas Tech. Stay tuned for the best updates in the state of Idaho.
Bronco Women Beat Michigan State At Blue-Gray
The Boise State women, seeing how the Bronco men made it possible to make some noise at the Blue Gray Tennis Classic, followed suit today and beat Michigan State 4-3.
They did it in the same way the men did yesterday, falling behind in doubles, then rallying for four singles wins.
Sandy Vo evened the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win. Then, after a Spartan win at #6 singles, Megan LaLone got it done with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at #4 singles. Morgan Basil followed by rallying 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 to win at #2 singles, and the Broncos were a point away. Michigan State prevailed at #5 singles to tie the match, and Marlena Pietzuch sent the Broncos home happy with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win at #1 singles.

Boise State Leads Portland State 2-1
Three hits in the PSU sixth, but only one run and Boise State still leads at Dona Larson.
Boise State Softball Team Loses 6-4 to Idaho State, Leads Portland State in Nightcap
Well, a second loss at home in their own tournament for the Bronco softball team. Boise State of the Mountain West lost yesterday to Utah State of the WAC, and they fell today to Idaho State of the Big Sky, 6-4.
The Broncos are trying to salvage some pride against Portland State, up 2-0 in the 4th. Rebecca Patton has a no-hitter through four.

UMass Loses
That's pretty much the last team that can take a bid away from Boise State. Mississippi is likely in by getting to the SEC final, but that shouldn't be enough to back the Broncos out of the tourney.
I am about 95% sure Boise State will be in the tournament. The main question is: will Boise State play in the opening play-in game or move directly to the second round. We'll know this time tomorrow.

Bettles Breaks Serve, Leads Boise State To Dramatic Win Over #22 Notre Dame
(An Idaho exclusive--brought to you here before anyone in the state...)
This was an exciting win for the Boise State tennis program. They lost the doubles point, and had to win four singles matches to knock off #1 seed Notre Dame at the Blue Gray Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Alabama. They did it.
The story revolves around #1 singles player Andy Bettles. Bettles fell behind when he lost the first set 6-4. He was then down 5-2 in the second set and, facing elimination each game, rallied to win five consecutive games and take the second set 7-5. Then, with a 5-4 lead in set #3, Bettles broke serve to win his match and lead Boise State to a 4-3 win over #22 Notre Dame, the favorite to win the Blue Gray.
The Broncos take on Texas Tech for the championship tomorrow afternoon.
Garrett Patton put the first Bronco points on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 win at #6 singles. Thomas Tenreiro then won his match at #4 singles, 6-4, 6-4. Nathan Sereke then topped his opponent at #3 singles, 6-3, 6-3 to make it 3-1. Scott Sears was unable to rally at #5, losing 6-4, 6-3.
Fillipp Pogostkin won his first set 7-5, but lost the second 6-4 at #2 singles. Fillipp and Bettles were the only two Broncos remaining on the courts. If one of them could emerge victorious, the Broncos would score the impressive upset. But Pecor of Notre Dame prevailed over Pogostkin in the third set, 6-4 to tie the match at 3, leading to the dramatic finish.

Pecor Stops Pogostkin
Pecor of Notre Dame rallied from a 7-5 first set loss to win the next two sets, 6-4, 6-4 and tie the match 3-3.
It's all up to #1 singles. Bettles just held serve and leads 5-4.
It's all up to #1 singles. Bettles just held serve and leads 5-4.
Andrews of Notre Dame Comes Back for Break
It's never over 'til it's over. So we're back to even, with Bettles and Andrews tied at 4. Pogostkin of Boise State will need to hold serve to continue his match, down 5-4 in second set.
Bettles Gets Break in Third Set
Andy Bettles has scored a service break in set #3 and leads 4-2. No breaks at #2 singles where Fillipp Pogostkin is behind 4-3.
Bettles Wins Second Set
Talk about determination. On the brink of elimination in the second set, being down 5-2, Bettles came back for a 7-5 win to even the score. Third set underway with Bettles leading 3-2.
No breaks in the only other remaining match at #2 singles. Pecor of Notre Dame leads Pogostkin of Boise State 3-2.
No breaks in the only other remaining match at #2 singles. Pecor of Notre Dame leads Pogostkin of Boise State 3-2.
Broncos Grab 3-2 Lead on Notre Dame
Nathan Sereke won his match at #3 singles, 6-3, 6-3, giving Boise State their third point of the afternoon. Scott Sears was unable to rally at #5, losing 6-4, 6-3.
So the Broncos lead 3-2 and trying to lay down that elusive point to finish the match. Bettles has rallied from being down 5-2 and now leads 6-5 in the second set. He lost the first set and his play has sparked the Broncos.
Filipp Pogostkin was unable to close out his opponent after winning the first set 7-5, or the match would be over. He lost the second set 6-4 and they are now playing in the third and final set.
Notre Dame needs both remaining singles matches, but the great teams always seem to get it done, no matter how much their backs are against the wall.

Tenreiro Makes It 2-1
A nice 6-4, 6-4 win for Thomas Tenreiro to put the score at 2-1 vs. Notre Dame at the Blue Gray Tennis Classic. Boise State only leads one other match of the remaining four, although no other breaks.
Garrett Patton Wins
Garrett has evened the score with #1 Notre Dame at the Blue-Gray Tennis Classic. Patton put away his opponent 6-4, 6-2 and will join his Dad as cheerleader for the other remaining five singles matches.
Boise State is winning one of the other five matches, but no break points as of the moment.
Boise State is winning one of the other five matches, but no break points as of the moment.
Bettles Tries To Rally
Bettles was down 5-2 but has won two games in the second set.
Bettles Down 5-2 in Second Set
Andy might be the first Bronco to go down. He lost the opening set as well.
It's rally time for the #1 seed in the tourney. Boise State leads just two of the six second sets, but they need four. Patton at #6 has the only break so far for Boise State and is up 4-1.

Scoreboard Malfunction
No updating of scores from the Blue-Gray. This usually happens when Boise State is ahead of an elite team and no surprise.
Tenreiro Wins At #4 Singles
Thomas Tenreiro has won, after one set at each singles battle, Boise State now has won four. Notre Dame won the doubles point, meaning Boise State needs 4 of 6--a split will do them no good.
Mixed Results in Montgomery
Pogostkin won his set 7-5 but Sears lost at #5 singles 6-4, so the singles matches are still split at 3-3 thus far.
Bettles Loses First Set
Andy Bettles, previously the #30 ranked singles player in the nation, lost his first set 6-4 today vs. Andrews of Notre Dame. The Broncos are counting on him to win to get the match.
Sereke and Patton have done their jobs, winning first sets at #3 and #6 singles, respectively.

Singles Action in Notre Dame-Boise State
Boise State leading in three sets, Notre Dame in three sets. Of course, that would produce a Notre Dame win in the match.

Notre Dame Easily Wins Doubles Point
A breeze for the Irish here. Andrews and Talmadge beat Andy Bettles and Nathan Sereke 8-2, while Bandy& Dooley of Notre Dame finished Mitchell & Pogostkin of Boise State 8-2.
Maryland and Vanderbilt Lose
Mississippi may have wrapped up a bid in the SEC with a win over Vanderbilt. Maryland fought to the finish before losing to North Carolina in the ACC, but the Terps' schedule is rated #111.
Boise State-Notre Dame Tennis
Just underway at the Blue-Gray Classic.
Utah, Southern Mississippi and Alabama Lose
Three underdogs have lost and are out of their conference tournaments. Utah lost last night to Oregon in the Pac-12 semifinal while Alabama lost today to Florida in the SEC semifinal and Southern Mississippi fell to Memphis in the Conference USA final in two overtimes.
Four teams remain in the hunt that could steal a bid from Boise State: Massachusetts plays in the Atlantic 10 semifinal vs. VCU while Maryland takes on North Carolina in the ACC semifinal. UMass and Maryland are teams on the bubble. Vanderbilt plays Mississippi in the SEC semifinal; both teams are alive for a bid and Ol' Miss may already have one.

Boise State Still On Pace To Set Free Throw Percentage Record
The Boise State basketball team is still on schedule to shatter the school record for best free-throw percentage in a season. And it's not close.
The Broncos have made 434-579 attempts this season for a sizzling 75.0%. That is significantly better than the 73.8% record set in the 2003-04 season. To show how great Coach Leon Rice's team has done, they could be 9-20 in the next game and still break the record.

Derrick Marks Four Free Throws Shy of Fifth-Place

Boise State Tennis Team Throttles #38 Nebraska
Boise State shocked Nebraska today, not just in beating the #38 Cornhuskers, but blanking them, at the Blue Gray Classic in Montgomery, Alabama.
Boise State won the doubles point as Andy Bettles and Nathan Sereke downed Andre Stenger and Marc Herrmann of Nebraska, 8-4. Garrett Patton and Scott Sears prevailed at #2 doubles, 8-3.
Filipp Pogostkin finished first with a win at #4 singles, his fourth straight victory. Thomas Tenreiro then scored a 7-5, 6-3 win over Tom Blackwell to bring Coach Greg Patton's team within one point of the upset. Then Andy Bettles won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to clinch the match.

Temple Loses
Yet another good result for Boise State.
That leaves Utah, Vanderbilt, Maryland and UMass as possible bid stealers if the four underdogs can win their conference tournaments. Barring all four of those winning, Boise State sitting good right now.

Things Continue To Go Generally Well for Boise State
Kentucky was pasted by a 16-16 Vanderbilt team today. Can't see anyone in their right mind choosing them for an at-large berth, defending champion or not.
Tennessee lost to Alabama, which has to diminish the Vols' chances. Alabama can still get in with one more win.
LaSalle lost to Butler but that was expected, so they could still get in.
Maryland winning definitely hurt Boise State but many feel the Terps need to win the ACC title to get in.
Iowa State lost to Kansas but most feel they are in anyway.
Iowa lost to Michigan State, as the Spartans made a furious comeback.
Utah, Maryland, UMass or Vanderbilt stealing a bid with a conference championship about the only thing threatening Boise State at this juncture. But most are not looking at "if" for Boise State but "when", in other words; if the Broncos will play the opening round of eight.

Things Breaking Boise State's Way
With California, Colorado, Cincinnati, Arkansas, Baylor and Illinois losing, and Virginia on the ropes, plus the fact that Utah and LSU (Boise State opponents) won tournament games, it's looking like Boise State could receive good news Sunday. Still plenty of basketball to go.
I think defending champion Kentucky is in if they beat Vanderbilt today. Tennessee is in if they beat Alabama. But Alabama may have to win one more to pass Boise State. LaSalle, Maryland, Iowa State and Iowa are others on the bubble and play today.

George Ivanov will take on Daniel Zilverberg of Minnesota at 157 pounds; Zilverberg was fifth at the Big Ten Championships. Brian Owen will meet Lehigh's Randy Cruz in the opening round. Cruz is 31-10 and won the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association championship.

Other Conference Basketball Results
Villanova beat St. John's in the Big East--a good thing for Boise State since 'Nova would have made the tourney anyway.

Boise State Golf Team Surprises in Sacramento
The Boise State golf team managed a fourth place finish at the Sacramento State Invitational over the weekend, the Broncos' best finish since October of 2011.
Junior Jordan Skyles finished the three rounds with 214, tied for seventh individually, while senior T.K. Kim was 17th with a score of 218. Kim's seven Top 25 finishes this year give him 15 for his career, tied for eighth at Boise State with Adam Choy (2002-06).

Broncos Score Dramatic Win In Regular Season Finale
Boy, what a way to close out the regular season. Boise State scored yet another impressive win in this outstanding basketball season with a 69-65 win over San Diego State. With the win, I believe Boise State just punched a ticket to the NCAA Tourney, provided they beat the Aztecs in the opening round of the MWC Tourney.

UNLV Free Throws: 26, Boise State Free Throws: 8
When one team has the lead the entire game, you would expect that team to get more free throws, since they are being more aggressive. Not so, Jack. And it wasn't even close.
Fouls Cost Boise State the Road Win
Boise State, in control of the game with UNLV nearly the entire game, boasting leads as much as 10 and 12 points, unfortunately was called for a lot more fouls in Las Vegas (with their top two scorers Anthony Drmic and Derrick Marks both fouling out), and as a result, the home team is going to win the game.

Boise State One of Nine Schools To Achieve Membership In 10/20 Club Three Times In Past Decade
Boise State's achievement of reaching the 10/20 Club was the third time in school history that the Broncos have done it. Boise State also reached the elite group in 2003-04 and 2007-08. The Broncos are one of just nine schools to attain 10/20 status three times since 2003.
The other schools are: Texas (five times), BYU, Ohio State and Florida (four each), and Louisville, Oklahoma, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
To achieve membership in the 10/20 Club, a school must win 10 or more regular-season football games and 20 or more regular-season basketball games. Playoffs, bowl games, and postseason conference tournaments do not count. Which is why membership in the 10/20 Club is elite. With the ever-growing conference championships and tournaments, it is much easier to reach 10 wins in football and 20 in basketball than it used to. Now, a team can be 16-16 and win four NIT games and get there. Hardly deserving.
Boise State is also one of just 15 schools that have reached the 10/20 Club three times since 1980. And the Broncos gave all the other schools in the nation a 15-year headstart since the school was only accepted as a major college football team in 1996.

Boise State Soundly Beats Colorado State 78-65
In most years, a win like tonight would be talked about for years. For the 2012-2013 Broncos it's just another in a growing list of impressive victories.
Derrick Marks and Boise State put on a spellbinding performance in dismantling second-place Colorado State 44-29 in the second half to win going away at Taco Bell Arena 78-65. Marks scored 33 of his career-high 38 points in the second half and at one point, had scored 26 of Boise State's 28 points in the period. He turned in the fifth-highest point performance in Boise State history, falling just four points shy of Ron Austin's 42, one of the oldest marks in the record book. Marks became just the third Bronco to score 30 or more points three times in a season, joining Austin (1971) and Tanoka Beard (1993). Marks scored 35 in Boise State's win over nationally-ranked Creighton.
Boise State won the game on defense and on the boards. CSU came into the game as the #1 rebounding team in the nation, but on this night the Broncos won that battle, 31-30.
Boise State advanced to 20-8 on the season and 8-6 in the Mountain West while Colorado State fell to and 9-5. The Broncos are now tied for fourth in the conference with idle San Diego State. Air Force is 7-6 and plays Fresno State tonight.
Boise State also became just the 15th school since 1980 to join the 10/20 Club three times. This despite Boise State becoming a major college football team in 1996, giving all other schools a 15-year head start. To achieve membership in the 10/20 Club, a school must win 10 or more regular-season games on football and 20 or more regular-season games in basketball. Playoffs, bowl games and postseason tournament games do not count, making membership in the Club all the more special. And Boise State has done it three times, all in the last decade.
The Broncos now take to the road for games against UNLV and San Diego State.

Marks with 38, just four shy of school mark of 42 set by Ron Austin.
Boise State Will Be Tied for 4th
It's all over but the final score. Boise State came to play tonight before another sellout crowd. Marks just hit another long try to give him a career-high 36.
Boise State will tie San Diego State for fourth in the Mountain West with 8-6 league marks. Air Force is 7-6 and plays Fresno State tonight.

This kind of phenomenon is always possible with Marks, who can get in an incredible zone and take over a game.
Marks has helped. Boise State grab a 62-52 lead.

Bates is now 7th in the nation with one day left and very likely punched her ticket to the NCAA's.

Oregon State Clinches Win
Owen's upset and too many head-to-head losses to Oregon State were the difference.
Cody Dixon Takes Third At 197
Dixon won 3-2 and will face Jake Meredith of Arizona State with an NCAA berth on the line.
Bronco Gymnasts Close Out Home Season With Win
Boise State finally topped the 196 mark again, with a 196.575-195.60 win over Southern Utah. It probably won't move the team much from 27th. The Broncos need a 196-plus performance on the road.
Colorado State With Run To End Half
The Broncos led the entire half until CSU took the lead 36-34 going into halftime.
Swartz Becomes 3rd Bronco Champion
Jake with a nice 3-1 win at 184 pounds.

Ivanov Wins At 157
George Ivanov upset R.J. Pena of Oregon State 3-2 to win the championship. The loss by Owen really hurts, but Boise State trying to make a run at the Beavers.
Chamberlain Wins PAC-12 Title
Jason out pointed Oregon State's Scott Sakaguchi to take the title at 149 pounds. An important win since head-to-head matches are crucial in a championship run.
Himmelman Takes Third
Travis Himmelman scored a reversal late to take third at 141 pounds.
Owen Loses To Lolito
For Boise State to take the PAC-12 title, the team needs a few upsets. They don't need to be upset, but that is what just happened. Brian Owen, defending champion and top seed, lost 4-2 to #3 seed Devon Lolito in the final at133 pounds.
Haddadin Goes Down
Rami Haddadin lost to Dalton Miller of Arizona State 15-6 in the match for fifth place at 125 pounds.

Chamberlain and Sakaguchi have split two matches this season.
Swartz defeated Sean Pollock and Ryan Davies this morning. And will face Arizona State's
Brian Owen (133 pounds), George Ivanov (157) and J.T. Felix (285) also will wrestle for PAC-12 championships tonight after a bye and a win each.

Swartz was the only other Bronco to wrestle two bouts in the morning session. The redshirt junior earned a pair of decisions against Sean Pollock and Ryan Davies and will face Kevin Radford of Arizona State in the finals. Swartz defeated Radford by major decision in a dual match this season. Owen, Ivanov and Felix each had byes to the semifinal round where each won by decision. Felix's semifinal match against Levi Cooper was highlighted as the last bout of the session while each of the other two mats were empty. The meeting lived up to the showcase as Felix won in the tiebreaker. After Cooper rode Felix for the first 30 second period, Felix chose a neutral position to start the second period, sacrificing a point and giving Cooper a 3-2 lead. The decision turned out to be a wise one as he first got a stalling point to level the score at three apiece immediately followed by a takedown to seal the win, 5-3 and punch a ticket to the finals where he will face top-seeded and fourth-ranked Chad Hanke of Oregon State. Ivanov will also see a Beaver in the finals as he gets a rematch against RJ Pena. The two have gone toe-to-toe eight times in the past two years and are even at a 4-4 record. Owen will see Devon Lotito of Cal Poly. Travis Himmelman (141) and Holden Packard each went 1-1 during the opening session. Himmelman gave his team a bonus point with a major decision against Josh Lauderdale in the first round before dropping a one-point decision to Timmy Box in the semifinals. The redshirt freshman made a charge from down 4-0 but was held off and sent to the consolation bracket. Packard entered as the two seed and defeated Connor King of Cal Poly by an 8-5 decision to start things off but fell against the No. 3 seed Bret Baumbach in the second round. Rami Haddadin (125), Scott Bacon (174), and Cody Dixon (197) each went 0-1 and will look for third-place finishes in the consolation bracket. Dixon held his own against the sixth-ranked Taylor Meeks of Oregon State and led most of the bout, but it was a last-second takedown that would give Meeks the 6-4 win. Consolation semifinals will get the second session started at 3:30 p.m. MT which will be followed by the first, third and fifth-place matches of going simultaneously starting at 5 p.m. |

The 10/20 Club
As promised, here's more information on the 10/20 Club, which I began keeping track of several years ago. My data goes back to 1980, and the further you go, the tougher it is to verify records, especially in basketball. But all of the following have been confirmed.
To achieve membership in the 10/20 Club, a school must win 10 or more regular-season games in football and 20 or more regular-season games in basketball in the same school year (fall to spring). Post-season playoffs, bowls and tournaments do not count, which is what makes the 10/20 Club a significant achievement. A conference championship in football, bowl games, and conference and other post-season basketball games merely add more games, making it easier to win 10 and 20 games, respectively. But it dilutes the achievement and not only that, doesn't compare favorably to schools in the past that achieved the 10/20 Club without playing extra games.
Here is the complete list of The 10/20 Club since 1980:

Boise State Can Join The 10/20 Club For Third Time In History
OK, we can now start talking about this. With one more win in basketball, Boise State can achieve the 10-20 Club for the third time in their history. To reach this elite club, a school must win 10 or more regular-season games in football and 20 or more regular-season games in basketball. Bowl games, playoffs and tournament games do not count, which is why it is such an outstanding achievement.
I'll have more on the 10-20 Club in the days to come if Boise State is able to get that 20th win.

Boise State Inks Deal With Virginia To Play Football
In an amazing move, Boise State Athletic Director Mark Coyle announced today that the school has agreed to a home-and-home series with Virginia, currently with the Atlantic Coast Conference. Boise State will travel in 2015, with the Cavaliers coming to Bronco Stadium in 2017.
Expect this to be just the first of many such announcements as ESPN will make it possible for such games in Bronco Stadium to occur.

Elorriaga Tied for 9th All-Time In Career Three-Pointers
Jeff Elorriaga's sharpshooting last night not only helped the Broncos score an important road win; it also moved Jeff up the ladder of the cream of the crop of Boise State long-range specialists.

Elorriaga nailed six three-pointers last night in Boise State's victory over Fresno State to give him 138 in his three-year career. That ties Elorriaga with Anthony Thomas for ninth-place in the history of Boise State basketball. Next up, a pair of legends that are tied for seventh: Chris Childs and Roberto Bergersen--both hit 163 treys among the other outstanding things they accomplished in their careers.
Elorriaga now has connected on 71 three-pointers this season, which moves him past Coby Karl (2005-2006) and ties him with Bergersen (2008-2009) for seventh for the most three-pointers in a season at Boise State. With a minimum of five games to play, Elorriaga has an outside shot at the school record of 92 set by Abe Jackson in 2001-02 and a realistic chance at tying Tyler Tiedeman (84 in 2007-08) for second.
