Battle In Mountain West Track is for 2-3-4
New Mexico has a seven-point lead heading into the final day of the Mountain West Conference Track & Field Championships in Nampa, but the Lobos are well on schedule to dominate the event.
In preliminary top times yesterday in the running events and seeds for the field events, the Lobos are slated to finish with 168 points, which would easily outdistance the field. Conversely, Wyoming, which is currently in fourth place, is on pace for 67 total team points, considerably lower than everyone else.
In between are Air Force, Boise State and Colorado State, which should battle it out for second, third and fourth. Currently, the Broncos are projected to get 112 points to 109 for Air Force and 108 for Colorado State. Of course, anything can still happen, and perhaps the home crowd can push the Broncos over the top.
Here is what Boise State must do to make up ground and win the championship:
1. The Broncos will have to take care of business in the events they are expected to do well just to hold their projected position of second. In the 400, Boise State is slated to score 25 points. The quintet of Jordin Andrade (47.78), Manoah Wesson (48.68), Bret Scheve (49.06), Jeff Daw (49.26) and Paul Robertson (49.48) did their part in qualifying. There are two Lobo student-athletes in the mix. If everyone runs as they did in preliminaries, Boise State will score a little under projection. The five Broncos mentioned above can do a lot for their team's chances if they can relegate the two New Mexico runners to the bottom, but they are both upperclassmen and it appears it will be tough to do that.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Rolando Trammel and Justin Malnes are seeded 2-4 for 12 team points. New Mexico isn't much of a factor here, so Trammel and Malnes need to at least do that well tonight.. In the 200, Daveon Collins, Wesson and Robertson are projected to score 19 points to 8 for New Mexico. Again, the Broncos will be doing well just to keep pace with that projection, but could pick up a few more points if they can finish ahead of the Lobo sprinter. Chase Sexton and Will Lohman are projected to score 14 in the shot put, a 2-3 finish.
Obviously, there's not much room for improvement when you're already expected to do as well as those four events. Realistically, there's only a net difference of 10 points either way in the three events. But Boise State must at least score 70 points in those three events to have any chance at a team title.

Head-to-head performance is the best chance to make a difference in a team championship but unfortunately, the events that New Mexico is best in are events in which Boise State has little chance, and vice versa. Johnasen Takes Second in Attempt to Bring Boise State Back
Sydney Johansen did her part, placing second in the 100-yard breaststroke tonight in San Antonio. Boise State is now 154 points behind San Diego State with 10 events remaining.

Hughey Finishes 4th in 100 Butterfly
Stevie Hughey finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly tonight, but Boise State is getting blown out of the water. The Broncos are second as a team, but trail San Diego State by a whopping 143 points. Kate Holman and Tajanee Simmons Do Not Qualify For 60-Meter Hurdle Final
Holman and Simmons both came up short on their home track in the 60-meter hurdles preliminary.
Bates, Lucas Qualify for Mile Final
Boise State's Emma Bates and Lauren Lucas both qualified for the final in the mile at Jackson's Track in Nampa. Morgan Mosby of Air Force (5:00.52) owned the top time as the Falcons also had two qualifiers while New Mexico qualified three distance runners.
First Final in Nampa
Roderick Townsend and Adam Ruggiero combined for eight team points in the first event of the weekend at the 2013 Mountain West Conference Championships. Townsend finished third in the heptathlon while Ruggiero was seventh. That ties the Broncos with Air Force for second, while Richard York put New Mexico in first with 10 points. Boise State and Air Force are once again expected to battle for the team title.

Three Broncos Roar On To 100 Breast Final

After two days of competition at the 2013 Mountain West Swimming & Diving Championships, the highly-regarded Broncos are in fifth place. That's the same position they were in yesterday, thanks to a disqualification in the 400-yard medley relay.

Boise State Wrestlers Rise To #19
Don't look now, but the Boise State wrestlers are looking more and more like they'll be a factor at the upcoming NCAA Championships. After a rebuilding year last season, Coach Greg Randall's Broncos are back.
They have been steadily rising up the ranks of the nation's best teams, and this week, Boise State moved from 21-19. The Broncos are getting ready for the Pac-12 Championships, which begin March in Tempe, Arizona.

Elorriaga Moves Into 10th All-Time for 3-Point Field Goals
Jeff Elloriaga passed Tyler Tiedeman (2005-2008) for 10th place all-time in three-point field goals at Boise State. Tiedeman made 129 in his four-year career, and tonight, Elloriaga pushed his total to 132. Elloriaga is now six treys behind Anthony Thomas for 9th place.

Boise State Swimming & Diving Team in Fifth Place at MWC Championships
The Broncos had to fight for their lives last year to win the conference championship. Now, they'll have to fight from way down after the first day this year. New Mexico has the lead with 60 points with Fresno State (55 points), Nevada (53) and San Diego State (53) close behind.
Boise State is all the way back with 52 points while UNLV has 50, Colorado State with 33, Wyoming has 33 first-day points and Air Force has 20.

Broncos Down Air Force 77-65
Good win for the team, pulling away in the second half with an 18-4 run that stood up the rest of the game. Boise State is now 17-8 overall and 5-6 in the MWC, one loss out of fourth place.

Broncos Finish Disappointing Fourth in 800 Free Relay
Boise State finished fourth in the 800 Freestyle Relay tonight. The bad news there: San Diego State, the team that battled the Broncos to the last event last year at the MWC Championships, won the event and the 40 points that go along with it.
Bronco Relay Team Smashes All-Time Mountain West Record
Today is the opening day of the Mountain West Swimming & Diving Championships, and the Broncos are off to a great start. Both Lexi Pfeiffer and Ciera Cortney qualified for the finals of the one-meter diving finals, though Cortney was 31 points under her seed of 284.85.

Bronco Wrestlers Destroy Cal Poly in Pac-12, 43-3
The surging Boise State wrestling team downed Cal Poly 43-3 in their final Pac-12 match of the season. Boise State faces Utah Valley next Wednesday in the regular season finale at Taco Bell Arena.

Broncos Win Their 16th Over Wyoming 68-61
Boise State had a 17-point lead, but Wyoming cut it to six late. Anthony Drmic had 21 points and seven rebounds to lead the Broncos while Derrick Marks had 17 points and five boards. Boise State is 16-7 on the season and 4-5 in the MWC. The Broncos are now half a game behind Air Force for fifth in the conference.
Lady Broncos Win 8-4
It's a final in Tempe, with the Boise State softball team winning. The Lady Broncos are now 2-1 and face two important tests tomorrow against Oregon and Arizona State.

Bettles Wins at #1 Singles, Broncos Beat Minnesota
The Boise State men's tennis team won on the road over a Big 10 team today, 4-2. They are still playing at #2 singles, but it won't matter; the Broncos have clinched a big win. Congrats Coach Patton and team!
Pogostkin Wins at #4 Singles
I'm able to determine the results of the singles matches, despite the best efforts of Minnesota to hide the score. Fillipp Pogostkin courageously battled back from a 6-3 loss in the first set to win the next two, 6-3 and 6-1 and take the match. Boise State leads 3-2. Boise State lost at #3 and #6 singles.

Wyoming found Boise State in a cold spell in the first half and the Cowgirls went on to defeat the Broncos 77-60 in Laramie this afternoon.

Treadway, Lucas Top Utah State Runners in Women's 3,000
The Boise State women's track team is showing a little life as a program. Competing against Nevada and Utah State, among others, Taryn Treadway of Boise State won the 3,000 meters today in Nampa. Treadway dominated the field with a time of 10:17.68, while teammate Lauren Lucas was second in 10:21.90.
Robertson Wins 200
Paul Robertson of Boise State won the 200-meter run today in the Boise State Team Challenge in Nampa. Robertson sprinted to the tape in 22.11, just ahead of teammate Jeff Daw, who finished in 22.38.

Rick Morrill of Boise State topped Nevada's Mariah Gramolini to win the 800-meter run this afternoon at Jackson's Track in Nampa. Morrill covered the distance in 2:12.21 while Gramolini was clocked in 2:14.80.

Cyntrail Pierce (56.64), Taryn Campos (56.70), Megan Kelley (56.72), Mackenzie Flannigan (57.01) and Chelsey Washington (57.63) finished 1-2-3-4-5 to dominate their counterparts from Nevada and Utah State in the 400-meter dash at the Boise State Team Challenge this afternoon in Nampa.
Lady Broncos Blast Northwestern 11-3
After a disappointing loss to Portland State, the Boise State softball team bounced back for an overpowering 11-3 win over Northwestern of the Big 10 Conference this morning in Tempe, Arizona at the Kajikawa Classic.
The Lady Broncos pounced on three Wildcat pitchers for all 11 runs in the final four innings after Northwestern had taken a 1-0 lead through the first three. Sarah Barnes got things going in the fourth with a walk. Brittany McCray doubled, scoring Barnes, and Brittany later scored on one of five errors today by the Wildcats.
In a stellar Bronco fifth, Holly Bourke singled, then Devon Bridges reached on a fielder's choice. Ashley Palmer followed with a blast over the wall in left center to give Coach Erin Thorpe's team its first lead at 2-1. Barnes followed with a homer of her own, but Boise State wasn't done yet. McCray and Jordan Kreiger both reached on errors, and Makenna Weir was safe on a fielder's choice leaving runners on first and second. Ashley Collier came through with a single that scored Kreiger. After Glover reached first on another error to load the bases, Bourke's single up the middle scored Weir and Collier.
Bridges ripped a homer in the sixth for a 9-1 Bronco lead. In the seventh, Glover singled, stole second, and came home on Bourke's single. Bridges followed with a safety of her own to drive in Bourke.

Sexton Wins Shot
Boise State's Chase Sexton captured the shot put title at the BSU Team Challenge Track Meet at Jackson's in Nampa. Sexton uncorked a throw of 56-9 1/2 to win the event.
Who Rushed for More Yards in Rookie Season--O.J. Simpson, Earl Campbell or Doug Martin?
O.J. Simpson averaged just 600 yards per season in his first three years in the NFL. Earl Campbell had 1,450 yards in his rookie year.
The winner of those three: Boise State's Doug Martin, who rushed for 1,454 yards this year for Tampa Bay. The all-time rookie record is held by Eric Dickerson, who exploded for 1,808 yards.

Bronco Gymnasts Jump From 21-16
I've laid it out for the Boise State gymnasts--score a minimum of 196 or give up any chance for Nationals. It appears they're listening, because they put up their first score above 196 this year against BYU Friday.
Lo and behold, the Bronco women jumped from 21-16 in this week's national gymnastics rankings. Imagine that. And imagine what a score of 196 in their next meet might do for them.

Cameron Hartsfield Commits to Boise State
A rash of late commitments for Boise State, later than usual. Earlier in the week, the Broncos got Tanner Shipley. We now have word that cornerback Cameron Hartsfield (5-10, 185) from Allen High in Texas has given his commitment to Coach Petersen and staff.

#20 New Mexico came from behind to blast the team that whipped Boise State, Nevada, by a score of 79-62.

Broncos Knock Off UNLV 77-72
Boise State's on-again, off-again 2012-2013 basketball team downed highly-regarded UNLV tonight, 77-72, in Taco Bell Arena.
That just happens to be the third highly-regarded team the Broncos have topped this season, as the Rebels join Creighton and Wyoming as Boise State victims. Perhaps no coincidence that Jeff Eliorriaga, the quarterback of the Bronco team, returned to action tonight after a serious concussion.
Whatever the reason, Coach Leon Rice's team didn't play at all like the team that was defeated by double digits by both Nevada and Colorado State. The Broncos led from start to finish in knocking off UNLV. Anthony Drmic led Boise State with 22 points, including three three-pointers and 9-of-10 shooting from the free-throw line. Yet another win for Boise State today at the Bronco Classic. Drew O'Donoghue-McDonald took the men's 800 meters wiht a time of 1:54.41.
Bates Wins 800
Emma Bates edged Utah's Rosalie Waller to win the 800-meters at the Bronco Classic this afternoon. Bates was clocked in 2:11.14 to 2:11.70 for Waller.
Rolando Trammel Wins 60 Hurdles
It took just 8.02 seconds for Boise State's Rolando Trammel to go from start to finish in the men's 60-meter hurdles as the Broncos are dominating the Bronco Classic in Nampa over Utah and Utah State.
Manoah Wesson Wins 400
Manoah Wesson led a 1-2-3 Bronco sweep in the 400 at the Bronco Classic. Wesson crossed the tape in 47.71.
Bennett, Pierce Go 1-2 in the 400
Chalk up yet another win by Boise State over the newest member of the Pac-12. Utah was chosen in conference expansion over the Broncos two years ago. Boise State's Yvonne Bennett and Cyntrail Pierce (both with 57.02) got the best of Utah's Alyssa Johnson today in the 400 meters at the Bronco Classic in Nampa.
VanderMalle Wins Mile As Broncos Take 3 of Top 4 Places
Marissa VanderMalle captured the mile today at the Bronco Track Classic at Jackson's Track in Nampa. VanderMalle ran the distance in 4:55.02, edging Utah State's Alex Litzsinger (4:56.12). Rick Morrill of Boise State was third (5:04.42) while Lauren Lucas (5:05.39) took fourth.

Boise State Gymnasts Top 196, Beat BYU
The Broncos topped the magic 196 number, defeating BYU 196.325 to 195.125.

The Broncos did it. They battled back from a 12-0 deficit with one of their best wrestlers down to injury and won 23-15 over Cal Bakersfield. The Broncos are now 7-5 overall and 3-1 in the Pac-12. Bakersfield falls to 7-4 and 1-2.

With Jake Schwartz's 14-6 major, the Broncos now lead Bakersfield for the first time tonight. Scwartz is now 24-3 this season. The Broncos have battled back from a 12-0 deficit early. Two matches remain at Taco Bell Arena.

The Bronco wrestlers are in the hole early. Brian Owen, the 15th-ranked wrestler in the nation at 133 pounds, was injured and unable to complete his match. That gave Bakersfield 6 points in the early portion of the match and Boise State has been fighting from behind ever since.

The Boise State wrestling team moved up a spot in the latest wrestling rankings. The Broncos are now #24 in the country.

Bronco Gymnasts Top BYU But Score Under 196
The Boise State gymnastics team edged BYU last night in Provo, Utah, but both teams scored under 196, the point total needed to be taken seriously as a Top 12 team. The Lady Broncos totaled 194.700 points to 194.425 for the homestanding Cougar women.
Sophomore Caitlin Mann won four titles, including all-around, while Brittany Potvin-Green and Amanda Otuafi each shared two titles on individual events. Mann won the all-around with 38.625, chalking up titles on vault (9.850), uneven bars (9.850) and balance beam (9.750). Otuafi shared the vault title with Mann, Potvin-Green shared the bars title with Mann, and Potvin-Green and Otuafi each scored 9.850 on floor exercises to tie for individual honors there.
"We are happy with our performance tonight," said co-head coach Tina Bird. "It was a great team effort."
The two teams will face off in one week at the first Boise State Beauty and the Beast competition of the season. The meet will be held in conjunction with the wrestling match on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7:00 p.m. in Taco Bell Arena.

Money at the Line
Boise State seems to play its best when the chips are down. With floor leader Jeff Elorriaga unable to play the second half, still feeling the effects of a concussion, the Bronco basketball team responded with a 74-67 victory over Fresno State tonight at Taco Bell Arena.
The Broncos have an incredible free-throw shooting performance to thank for their victory. Boise State shot 26-26 tonight to shatter the existing school record. The Broncos had a great stretch run after the two teams were tied at 64. Anthony Drmic hit two free throws with 1:53 left to break the tie and Coach Leon Rice's team did not let up. Ryan Watkins grabbed three key rebounds in the final minutes and Marks and Watkins each sank free throws to preserve the Bronco win.
Fresno State was the team that jumped out of the gate to grab a 14-6 lead with 12:27 left in the first half. A Rice timeout stopped that, as his team responded with a 15-4 run to take a 21-18 lead with 4:59 remaining. The Broncos then ran into the locker room with a 31-26 halftime lead.
Marks scored six points as the Broncos took their biggest lead at 39-28. Credit the feisty Bulldogs for chipping away at that lead, finally tying the game at 43 on Tyler Johnson's three-pointer. Marvell Harris sank a three of his own with 12:33 left to put Fresno up 46-43.
The teams traded baskets until Drmic nailed another three-pointer with 7:29 left to put the Broncos up 55-53. Fresno State tied the game at 59 on Allen Huddleston's three-pointer with 4:29 remaining.
Marks led Boise State with 30 points, while Drmic hit for 23 points including 5-8 from three-point land. Ryan Watkins achieved his third straight double-double with 18 rebounds and 10 points. Watkins threatened another school record, just four away from the mark of 22 set by Bill Otey in both 1968 and 1969 and Steve Wallace in 1972.
Huddleston was 6-10 from the field with five three-pointers to lead the Bulldogs with 20 points, while Johnson had 16 and Harris 10.

Chamberlain Scores Tech Fall
The big three for the Bronco wrestling team have taken charge. First a tech fall by Owen, then a great win by Strait in the final seconds, and now Jason Chamberlain scored a tech fall of his own in a 20-5 win. Boise State now leads Arizona State 13-7.
Strait Puts Broncos Ahead
Josh Strait scored a 2-point takedown with seven seconds remaining in the match for a 4-2 decision, enabling the Boise State wrestling team to take its first lead over Pac-10 rival Arizona State, 8-7.
Brian Owen Scores 23-7 Win
With his team down, Brian Owen scored a phenomenal 23-7 technical fall to bring Boise State to within two points of Arizona State in the Bronco wrestling squad's season opener.

Wesson Wins 200
Boise State's Manoah Wesson edged Brett Blanshan of Washington State to take the 200-meter run today at Jackson's Track. Wesson crossed the tape in 21.60, followed closely by Blanshan in 21.80.
Bronco Swimmers Lead Wyoming 166-94
With just a few events remaining, the Boise State swimming and diving team is taking it to their counterparts from Wyoming. The Bronco women lead the Cowgirls, 166-94 at the Boise West Family YMCA.
Seniors Stevie Hughey (56.29) and Rachel Heaney (57.16) were able to finish 1-2 in the 100 butterfly. Heaney also won the 200 fly with a time of 2:01.61. Emily Campbell (1:04.91) and Sydney Johansen (1:04.96) finished first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke while Chelsea Miller (2:18.96) and Campbell (2:19.40) were 1-2 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Seniors Devin Madsen and Sam Wicks were 1-2 in the 100 backstroke with times of 56.22 and 57.65, respectively.

Emri Moore took first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:03.88 while Madsen was first in the 200 backstroke in 2:01.86. Boise State also won the 200-yard medley relay.

Will Lohman captured the weight throw title at today's Bronco Invitational at Jackson's Track in Nampa. Lohman heaved the ball 56-feet, 7.50-inches.
Lauren Lucas won the women's mile in 5:09.03.
It has been a disappointing meet for the Broncos otherwise, with a few field events left and the track finals getting underway.

Boise State Gymnasts Top Utah State 194.875 to 191.250
A good start for an opener, but they'll never get to Nationals with less than 196 on a consistent basis:

Boise State leads Utah State in the season opener, 97.550 to 95.125. Broncos have to average 49 per routine to get to where they want to be, so they might as well pick it up tonight and start hitting 49's.

Boise State Tops Oregon at Blue and Orange Opener
The Boise State men's track team shocked powerful Oregon with seven titles at the Blue and Orange Opener at Jackson's Indoor Track in Nampa yesterday. The Ducks were able to win six events.
Will Lohman uncorked a personal best of 60-feet, 5-inches to win the weight throw, easily outdistancing Oregon's Miles Walk (55-10.25). Manoah Wesson set an indoor-best of 47.79 seconds to take the 400-meter title and finished second to teammate Daveon Collins (21.35) in the 200-meters in 21.81. Chase Sexton captured the shot put with a throw of 57-11.75, edging Oregon's Sam Crouser (57-9.75), while Roderick Townsend won the high jump (6-6.75), Allan Schroeder the Mile (4:20.96) and the Bronco men's 4 x 400-meter relay team won in 3:26.43.
Rolando Trammel was second in the 60-meters (6.97) and third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.03. Justin Maines captured second in the latter event with a personal best of 8.01. Kyle Brush (4:25.26) and Wyatt Diederickson (4:33.10) finished behind Schroeder to cap a 1-2-3 Boise State finish in the miles.
The Boise State women, meanwhile, won the 4 x 400-meter relay (3:54.15) to avoid being shut out for the day.
