Boise State wrestling well right now, and they are beginning to move up the ladder in the national polls.  Coach Greg Randall's squad is #23 in this week's poll.

Bronco Gymnasts Jump From 21-16

I've laid it out for the Boise State gymnasts--score a minimum of 196 or give up any chance for Nationals.  It appears they're listening, because they put up their first score above 196 this year against BYU Friday.

Lo and behold, the Bronco women jumped from 21-16 in this week's national gymnastics rankings.  Imagine that.  And imagine what a score of 196 in their next meet might do for them.

Bronco Wrestlers Outpoint Stanford 29-7

Boise State's wrestling team won a decisive 29-7 victory over their Pac-12 rival Stanford tonight in Palo Alto, California.

Cameron Hartsfield Commits to Boise State

A rash of late commitments for Boise State, later than usual.  Earlier in the week, the Broncos got Tanner Shipley.  We now have word that cornerback Cameron Hartsfield (5-10, 185) from Allen High in Texas has given his commitment to Coach Petersen and staff.

Other Mountain West Basketball Scores

#20 New Mexico came from behind to blast the team that whipped Boise State, Nevada, by a score of 79-62.
Air Force scored a 50-47 win over #22 San Diego State.
Colorado State blew away Wyoming 65-46.

Broncos Knock Off UNLV 77-72

Boise State's on-again, off-again 2012-2013 basketball team downed highly-regarded UNLV tonight, 77-72, in Taco Bell Arena.

That just happens to be the third highly-regarded team the Broncos have topped this season, as the Rebels join Creighton and Wyoming as Boise State victims.  Perhaps no coincidence that Jeff Eliorriaga, the quarterback of the Bronco team, returned to action tonight after a serious concussion.

Whatever the reason, Coach Leon Rice's team didn't play at all like the team that was defeated by double digits by both Nevada and Colorado State.  The Broncos led from start to finish in knocking off UNLV.  Anthony Drmic led Boise State with 22 points, including three three-pointers and 9-of-10 shooting from the free-throw line.  Derrick Marks added 17 while Ryan Watkins had 12 points and Elorriaga 11.

Anthony Bennett poured in 25 points to lead the Rebels while Anthony Marshall had 18.  

Boise State is now 15-6 with the win but just 3-4 in Mountain West Conference play.  UNLV falls to 17-5 on the season and 4-3 in the MWC.  Boise State faces a tough road conference next Wednesday against San Diego State before hosting Wyoming one week from tonight.  Rumor has it the Boise State students have something special planned--might be a good idea to be on hand to witness it.

Sexton Takes Shot

Boise State's Chase Sexton captured the prize in the men's shot put at the Bronco Classic in Nampa.  Sexton heaved the shot 56-feet, 8.75-inches.

Lohman Wins Weight Throw at Bronco Classic

Will Lohman of Boise State was the victor in the men's weight throw competition today at Jackson's Track in Nampa.  Lohman heaved the ball 59-feet, 10.50 inches.

O'Donoghue-McDonald Takes 800

Yet another win for Boise State today at the Bronco Classic.  Drew O'Donoghue-McDonald took the men's 800 meters wiht a time of 1:54.41.         

Bates Wins 800

Emma Bates edged Utah's Rosalie Waller to win the 800-meters at the Bronco Classic this afternoon.  Bates was clocked in 2:11.14 to 2:11.70 for Waller.

Rolando Trammel Wins 60 Hurdles

It took just 8.02 seconds for Boise State's Rolando Trammel to go from start to finish in the men's 60-meter hurdles as the Broncos are dominating the Bronco Classic in Nampa over Utah and Utah State.

Manoah Wesson Wins 400

Manoah Wesson led a 1-2-3 Bronco sweep in the 400 at the Bronco Classic.  Wesson crossed the tape in 47.71.

Bennett, Pierce Go 1-2 in the 400

Chalk up yet another win by Boise State over the newest member of the Pac-12.  Utah was chosen in conference expansion over the Broncos two years ago.  Boise State's Yvonne Bennett and Cyntrail Pierce (both with 57.02) got the best of Utah's Alyssa Johnson today in the 400 meters at the Bronco Classic in Nampa.

VanderMalle Wins Mile As Broncos Take 3 of Top 4 Places

Marissa VanderMalle captured the mile today at the Bronco Track Classic at Jackson's Track in Nampa.  VanderMalle ran the distance in 4:55.02, edging Utah State's Alex Litzsinger (4:56.12).  Rick Morrill of Boise State was third (5:04.42) while Lauren Lucas (5:05.39) took fourth.

Boise State Gymnasts Top 196, Beat BYU

The Broncos topped the magic 196 number, defeating BYU 196.325 to 195.125.

Bronco Wrestlers Win One for Owen

The Broncos did it.  They battled back from a 12-0 deficit with one of their best wrestlers down to injury and won 23-15 over Cal Bakersfield.  The Broncos are now 7-5 overall and 3-1 in the Pac-12.  Bakersfield falls to 7-4 and 1-2.

Bronco Wrestlers Take 16-15 Lead

With Jake Schwartz's 14-6 major, the Broncos now lead Bakersfield for the first time tonight.  Scwartz is now 24-3 this season.  The Broncos have battled back from a 12-0 deficit early.  Two matches remain at Taco Bell Arena.

Broncos With 49.025 on Beam

Boise State with 147.3 after 3 rotations, still ahead of the pace for a 196, the minimum score needed to have any chance at making Nationals.  Of course, the Broncos will have to exceed that 196 in the meets to come to make up for sub-par 196's in the first two meets.

Boise State Down to Cal State Bakersfield 15-12

The Bronco wrestlers are in the hole early.  Brian Owen, the 15th-ranked wrestler in the nation at 133 pounds, was injured and unable to complete his match.  That gave Bakersfield 6 points in the early portion of the match and Boise State has been fighting from behind ever since.

Boise State With 49.125 on Bars

Two rotations, and two scores over 49, which is the average Boise State needs for a 196.  The Broncos have 98.275 after two rotations.  BYU scored 48.975 on vault and has 97.775.

Bronco Gymnasts Take Early Lead

Boise State has the early lead on BYU and the annual Beauty and the Beast event, 49.150 to 48.800.  The Broncos just completed their first rotation on vault while the Cougar women were on bars.

Boise State has not been able to top 196 this season, and as a result have fallen from a preseason ranking of #15 to an actual ranking of #21.

The Boise State wrestling team moved up a spot in the latest wrestling rankings.  The Broncos are now #24 in the country.

Bronco Gymnasts Fall to #21

Boise State's gymnastics team now finds itself all the way down to #21.  The Broncos have yet to top the 196 team score needed for inclusion among the nation's elite teams in two meets this season.  

Boise State began the season as the #15 team in the nation in a preseason vote of the nation's coaches, but have yet to live up to those expectations.

Bronco Gymnasts Top BYU But Score Under 196

The Boise State gymnastics team edged BYU last night in Provo, Utah, but both teams scored under 196, the point total needed to be taken seriously as a Top 12 team.  The Lady Broncos totaled 194.700 points to 194.425 for the homestanding Cougar women.  

Sophomore Caitlin Mann won four titles, including all-around, while Brittany Potvin-Green and Amanda Otuafi each shared two titles on individual events.  Mann won the all-around with 38.625, chalking up titles on vault (9.850), uneven bars (9.850) and balance beam (9.750).  Otuafi shared the vault title with Mann, Potvin-Green shared the bars title with Mann, and Potvin-Green and Otuafi each scored 9.850 on floor exercises to tie for individual honors there.

"We are happy with our performance tonight," said co-head coach Tina Bird.  "It was a great team effort."

The two teams will face off in one week at the first Boise State Beauty and the Beast competition of the season. The meet will be held in conjunction with the wrestling match on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7:00 p.m. in Taco Bell Arena.

Ouch! Boise State Beat By 16 at Nevada

The Broncos, 14-4 prior to today's game, were beaten 75-59 by the 11-8 Nevada Wolf Pack.

Matt Post Wins Weight Throw at Jackson's Invitational

Post had a best throw of 58-8 to win the event this afternoon.

Boise State Tennis Team Crushed By Cal, 4-1

Boise State was only able to win one match today at #14 California.  The guys have a long ways to go to become a Top 15 team.

Nice Sweep for the Boise State Men in the 3,000

Barak Watson, Aaron Back and David Elliott completed a 1-2-3 Boise State sweep in the men's 3,000-meter run tonight in the Jackson's Invitational at Jackson's Track in Nampa.  Well done, gentlemen!

Boise State Swimmers Top Denver

Nice outing on the road today for the 2013 Bronco swimming team.  Coach Kristin Hill's group won eight of 11 events with Jessie Bottelberghe taking two individual titles and contributing to a relay win

Boise State meets Colorado State tomorrow, while the Bronco diving team is in action today and tomorrow at the Air Force Invitational.

Money at the Line

Boise State seems to play its best when the chips are down. With floor leader Jeff Elorriaga unable to play the second half, still feeling the effects of a concussion, the Bronco basketball team responded with a 74-67 victory over Fresno State tonight at Taco Bell Arena.

The Broncos have an incredible free-throw shooting performance to thank for their victory. Boise State shot 26-26 tonight to shatter the existing school record. Previously, the mark was set by the Boise State teams of 1981 (vs. Montana), 1995 (also vs. Montana) and 1996 (vs. Saint Mary's), all with 8-8 performances. Derrick Marks sank 12-12, just two shy of the individual mark of 14-14 set by Gerry Washington in 1998.

The Broncos had a great stretch run after the two teams were tied at 64. Anthony Drmic hit two free throws with 1:53 left to break the tie and Coach Leon Rice's team did not let up. Ryan Watkins grabbed three key rebounds in the final minutes and Marks and Watkins each sank free throws to preserve the Bronco win.

Fresno State was the team that jumped out of the gate to grab a 14-6 lead with 12:27 left in the first half. A Rice timeout stopped that, as his team responded with a 15-4 run to take a 21-18 lead with 4:59 remaining. The Broncos then ran into the locker room with a 31-26 halftime lead.

Marks scored six points as the Broncos took their biggest lead at 39-28. Credit the feisty Bulldogs for chipping away at that lead, finally tying the game at 43 on Tyler Johnson's three-pointer. Marvell Harris sank a three of his own with 12:33 left to put Fresno up 46-43.

The teams traded baskets until Drmic nailed another three-pointer with 7:29 left to put the Broncos up 55-53. Fresno State tied the game at 59 on Allen Huddleston's three-pointer with 4:29 remaining.

Marks led Boise State with 30 points, while Drmic hit for 23 points including 5-8 from three-point land. Ryan Watkins achieved his third straight double-double with 18 rebounds and 10 points. Watkins threatened another school record, just four away from the mark of 22 set by Bill Otey in both 1968 and 1969 and Steve Wallace in 1972.

Huddleston was 6-10 from the field with five three-pointers to lead the Bulldogs with 20 points, while Johnson had 16 and Harris 10.

Now that the Bronco two-game losing streak is history, Boise State can concentrate on getting back in the conference race. Boise State is one of six teams tied at 2-2 behind New Mexico, which has a perfect 4-0 mark. To break that logjam, the Broncos will need to defeat Nevada this Saturday in Reno.

Fresno State slipped to 1-4 in the Mountain West and 7-11 overall.

Doug was an alternate to the Pro Bowl and now, it appears that Martin is going to Hawai'i!

Chamberlain Scores Tech Fall

The big three for the Bronco wrestling team have taken charge. First a tech fall by Owen, then a great win by Strait in the final seconds, and now Jason Chamberlain scored a tech fall of his own in a 20-5 win. Boise State now leads Arizona State 13-7.

Strait Puts Broncos Ahead

Josh Strait scored a 2-point takedown with seven seconds remaining in the match for a 4-2 decision, enabling the Boise State wrestling team to take its first lead over Pac-10 rival Arizona State, 8-7.

Brian Owen Scores 23-7 Win

With his team down, Brian Owen scored a phenomenal 23-7 technical fall to bring Boise State to within two points of Arizona State in the Bronco wrestling squad's season opener.

Wesson Wins 200

Boise State's Manoah Wesson edged Brett Blanshan of Washington State to take the 200-meter run today at Jackson's Track.  Wesson crossed the tape in 21.60, followed closely by Blanshan in 21.80.

Bronco Swimmers Lead Wyoming 166-94

With just a few events remaining, the Boise State swimming and diving team is taking it to their counterparts from Wyoming.  The Bronco women lead the Cowgirls, 166-94 at the Boise West Family YMCA.

Seniors Stevie Hughey (56.29) and Rachel Heaney (57.16) were able to finish 1-2 in the 100 butterfly.  Heaney also won the 200 fly with a time of 2:01.61.  Emily Campbell (1:04.91) and Sydney Johansen (1:04.96) finished first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke while Chelsea Miller (2:18.96) and Campbell (2:19.40) were 1-2 in the 200-yard breaststroke.  Seniors Devin Madsen and Sam Wicks were 1-2 in the 100 backstroke with times of 56.22 and 57.65, respectively.     

Seniors Jess Bottelberghe (1:51.01) and Brooke Balogh (1:53.86) finished 1-2 in the 200-yard freestyle while Bottelberghe won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.37.  Emri Moore took first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:03.88 while Madsen was first in the 200 backstroke in 2:01.86.  Boise State also won the 200-yard medley relay.  

Two Wins for Boise State Track Team in Bronco Invitational

Will Lohman captured the weight throw title at today's Bronco Invitational at Jackson's Track in Nampa.  Lohman heaved the ball 56-feet, 7.50-inches.

Lauren Lucas won the women's mile in 5:09.03.

It has been a disappointing meet for the Broncos otherwise, with a few field events left and the track finals getting underway.

Bronco Gymnasts Lead Utah State

Boise State leads Utah State in the season opener, 97.550 to 95.125.  Broncos have to average 49 per routine to get to where they want to be, so they might as well pick it up tonight and start hitting 49's.

Boise State Tops Oregon at Blue and Orange Opener

The Boise State men's track team shocked powerful Oregon with seven titles at the Blue and Orange Opener at Jackson's Indoor Track in Nampa yesterday.  The Ducks were able to win six events.

Will Lohman uncorked a personal best of 60-feet, 5-inches to win the weight throw, easily outdistancing Oregon's Miles Walk (55-10.25).  Manoah Wesson set an indoor-best of 47.79 seconds to take the 400-meter title and finished second to teammate Daveon Collins (21.35) in the 200-meters in 21.81.  Chase Sexton captured the shot put with a throw of 57-11.75, edging Oregon's Sam Crouser (57-9.75), while Roderick Townsend won the high jump (6-6.75), Allan Schroeder the Mile (4:20.96) and the Bronco men's 4 x 400-meter relay team won in 3:26.43.

Rolando Trammel was second in the 60-meters (6.97) and third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.03.  Justin Maines captured second in the latter event with a personal best of 8.01.  Kyle Brush (4:25.26) and Wyatt Diederickson (4:33.10) finished behind Schroeder to cap a 1-2-3 Boise State finish in the miles.

The Boise State women, meanwhile, won the 4 x 400-meter relay (3:54.15) to avoid being shut out for the day.

The Boise State teams host the Bronco Invitational next Saturday, January 19 at Jackson's Track.

A sweep tonight--Broncos beat the Cowboys and the Lady Broncos top the Cowgirls!

Shorthanded Boise State Bumps #25 Wyoming From Unbeaten Ranks

For the four Boise State basketball players suspended prior to the big game with #25 Wyoming--they don't get to experience the thrill of knocking of one of just four undefeated teams in the nation.

For those Broncos who played by the rules, they were just fine, thank-you.  Jeff Elorriaga's three-pointer at the buzzer gave Coach Leon Rice's squad a 63-61 win in Laramie tonight.

Elorriaga finished with 18, including 6-10 from three-point range, but none bigger than the money shot to give the Broncos the win.  Wyoming's Josh Adams had put the home team up 61-60 with nine seconds left before Elorriaga's heroics.

The game was a see-saw affair in the wild last minutes.  Boise State took a 31-26 lead going into halftime.  But the Cowboys erupted for an 19-4 run to take a 45-35 lead.  Derrious Gilmore had eight of those points to lead the Wyoming surge.   

But a three-pointer by Thomas Bropleh and a steal and layup by Igor Hadziomerovic with 7:01 left brought the Broncos all the way back to tie the game at 45.  Leonard Washington's layup with 5:15 remaining gave Wyoming a 50-47 lead but Hadziomerovic hit a triple on the next possession for Boise State.

Rice's team played incredible in the next stretch and threatened to take command, with a three by Anthony Drmic, a jumper by Hadziomerovic and a layup by Bropleh with 2:48 left that gave Boise State a 57-50 lead.  

Riley Grabau gave Wyoming a much-needed basket on the ensuing possession and after a foul on Drmic scrambling for position on an inbounds play, Leonard canned a three for the Cowboys to make it 57-55, Boise State.  Washington then electrified the Laramie crowd with a steal and dunk to the score with 1:19 left.

Grabau sank two free throws to extend the Cowboy run to nine with just 44 seconds left.  But the Broncos found another gear.  Elorriaga nailed a three-pointer with 31 seconds left to put the Broncos up 60-59 leading to the fantastic finish.

Drmic finished with 18 points to tie Elorriaga for the team lead while Hadziomerovic finished with 11 for Boise State.  Ryan Watkins hauled down six rebounds to lead the Broncos in that department.  Gilmore finished with 17 points to pace Wyoming while Washington and Adams chipped in with 12 each and Grabau 10.

Wyoming fell to 13-1 with the loss while Boise State is 13-2.  The Bronco win sets up a meeting with another Top 25 team, New Mexico, in Taco Bell Arena next Wednesday.

If you don't already have tickets, you better pick them up pronto or you'll get shut out.

Boise State Cruises to 89-70 Win Over Previously Unbeaten LSU

Those who used to love the Bobby Dye-coached teams in the 1980's, and Bronco fans who have been thrilled by the Boise State football team for so many years--there's a new team in town.

That team would be Leon Rice's 2012-13 Bronco basketball team, which tonight scored what could be a program-building 89-70 win over LSU to knock the Tigers from the unbeaten ranks before 11,210 fans at Taco Bell Arena.

Sophomore guard Anthony Drmic was sensational for Boise State, launching howitzer after howitzer to drain the net for threes, then soaring high above the rim for jaw-opening alley-oop slam dunks, including a thundering dunk over LSU's 7'3" center for his final field goal.   A dual threat like that presents major problems for the opposition, and Drmic hit for a career-high 34 points tonight.  Anthony hit six three-pointers and rolled up 19 points in the first half as Boise State built a 43-30 lead at intermission.  Clearly, Boise State played as good a first half as they could play.

Drmic continued his barrage in the second half, while Derrick Marks lit it up for 19 of his 23 points in the second half and Ryan Watkins had 12 points and a career-high 17 points in cleaning up the glass.  

But make no mistake about it--defense won this game.  It would have been a different story otherwise.  LSU built a 19-11 first-half lead when the Broncos began to get after it defensively.  Boise State stepped up the "D" several notches to bother the talented Tiger team and knock them off their game. Plus, Boise State's hustle tonight was beyond compare, scrambling feverishly for every loose ball and, led by Watkins, battling for every rebound.  The Bronco defense forced 20 LSU turnovers, 10 in each half.  Boise State's tenacity led to 13 steals, 4 each from Marks and Jeff Elorriaga.  Bobby Dye himself would have been proud.  In short, the Broncos put on quite a show tonight.

Boise State's energy led to commanding leads in 1) points in the paint (36-26), points off turnovers (30-18) and second-chance points (22-6).

After LSU had tied the game at 27 with 6:17 remaining in the half, the Broncos went on a 16-3 tear.  Kenny Buckner scored six points in a row, and Jeff Elorriaga stole the ball with six seconds left and fed Thomas Bropleh for the basket and foul.  The turn of events brought the Bell crowd to its feet and set the tone for the rest of the game.

Together with Derrick Marks' 35-point effort in the win over nationally-ranked Creighton, Drmic and Marks are just the third set of Boise State teammates to score 30 points in the same season.  The point totals are the 10th and 15th-best by a Bronco in school history.  

Corban Collins netted 19 for LSU (6-1) while Johnny O'Bryant III contributed 15 points before fouling out with 8:59 remaining.

Boise State is now 7-2 on the season and will play Idaho next Thursday at Century Link Arena.

Boise State Football Team To Host Louisville and Rutgers in 2013

It's already the best home football season in school history and we only know two conference teams that will play in Boise.

According to information we've obtained, Boise State will host the top two teams in the Big East Conference this year, Louisville and Rutgers, in 2013.  We will report more of the Broncos' conference schedule when it takes shape, but wow, what a couple of great home games!

Boise State Second Since 1900 and 4th All-Time for 10-Win Seasons

With today's win over Nevada, Boise State became the second team in the modern era and 4^th in history to win ten or more games in 10 out of 11 years.  

The only year in which Boise State did not win 10 or more games in the current stretch was 2005 when they were a disappointing 9-4.  The Broncos were 12-1 in 2002, 13-1 in 2003, 11-1 in 2004, 13-0 in 2006, 10-3 in 2007, 12-1 in 2008,12-1 in 2009 and 12-1 last season.  

Florida State is the only team in history to win 10 or more games in each year of a decade--the Seminoles did that in the 90's. The Seminoles, in fact, strung together 14 consecutive seasons of 10 wins (1987-2000).  

The only other college football teams to accomplish this amazing achievement are Pennsylvania and Princeton.  Penn won 10 games in 11 of 12 seasons from 1890-1901, with 1899 being the only year they didn't win at least 10.  Princeton won 11 of 12 from 1888-1899, with 1894 being the lone blemish during that streak.

Texas won 10 games in nine straight seasons from 2001-2009, ending that streak just last season.  Yale won 10 or more games from 1888-1896, a streak of nine consecutive years.  

Oklahoma won 10 or more games in nine out of 10 years (1971-1980) and won 10 games in eight out of nine years from 2000-2008.  The highly-successful Miami of Florida teams won 10 or more games in nine out of 10 years from 1983-1992.  Alabama had nine out of 10 years in which they won 10 or more from 1971-1980.  

Nebraska won 10 or more in all but one year from 1993-2001.  Harvard was able to win 10 or more in all but one year from 1886-1894.

USC won 10 or more games every year from 2002-2008 but could not put together a streak of eight out of nine.  Florida has had 12 seasons since 1991 of 10 or more wins but has never had more than seven out of eight.  For all of its storied tradition, Michigan has never been able to achieve a better streak than seven out of eight years (1971-1978).  Penn State’s best streak was six out of seven from 1968-1974.  

Boise State 6th All-Time with 7 Straight 10-Win Seasons

The players returning for the Boise State football team were entrusted with the keys to the legacy and with a tradition that has stunned most of the college football world outside of Idaho.  Those players came through with another 10-win season, despite losing half of their seniors to the NFL, and despite the naysayers.

Boise State ranks sixth in the history of the sport for the most consecutive 10-win seasons.  The Broncos have won 10 or more every year since 2006.  Seven straight seasons, and probably not coincidentally, as long as Chris Petersen has been coaching the team.

Florida State holds the all-time record of 14 (1987-2000) that may never be broken.  Pennsylvania (1890-1898) and Texas are second with nine (2001-2009), and Virginia Tech had a shot to tie the Longhorns but came up short this season.  The Hokies won 10 or more every year from 2004-2011.  Miami of Florida put together eight in a row from 1985-1992, while USC won 10 or more from 2002-2008, and Yale had 10-win seasons from 1888-1894.  And now Boise State has tied those two historic schools.  Boise State has more current onsecutive 10-win seasons than every other school in the nation, including Alabama, Michigan, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.  But the Sooners have accomplished something no other school has done--win 10 games in five consecutive seasons three different times.  

Interestingly enough, the 12 schools that are at the top of this list pretty represent most of the powerhouses in the history of college football.  Two teams notably absent from this group of consistent 10-game winners are Notre Dame and Penn State.  The best the Nittany Lions did was four seasons (1971-1974), while Notre Dame strung three 10-win seasons from 1991-1993.  This list pretty much sums up how great these 12 schools are.

Boise State Scores Biggest Upset in School History

Derrick Marks scored a career-high 35 points, including 18 straight in the second half, as Boise State upset #11 Creighton in Omaha last night, 83-70.

Creighton represents the highest-ranked team the Bronco basketball team has ever defeated.  Boise State, now 5-1, played #13 MIchigan State down to the wire last week on the road before losing by four.  Creighton had a home winning streak of 42 games in the month of November.

Anthony Drmic had 17 points and Jeff Elorriaga added 12 points on 4-5 shooting from three point range.  Doug McDermott led Creighton with 21 points while Grant Gibbs had 17.

Boise State posted a 39-33 halftime lead after shooting lights out (64%).  The Bronco sharpshooting team made seven straght 3-pointers and were 9-13 from three-point land in the first 20 minutes.  

Boise State Extends All-Time Record for Best Winning Percentage

Boise State took over the all-time lead for the best winning percentage in the history of college football two years ago, and the Broncos aren't looking back.

As of now, sporting a 9-2 season record, Boise State is now 167-46, a sizzling winning percentage of 78.40%.  Michigan is the next-closest college football team with an overall record of 903-313-36 for a percentage of 73.56%.  

Notre Dame is in third with a percentage of 73.38% (864-300-42), Oklahoma has won 71.83% (829-309-53), while Texas stands at 71.69% (866-332-33), Ohio State is at 71.58% (836-316-53) and Alabama has won 71.17% of their games (824-321-43).

Boise State Breaks Florida State Modern Record for Most Wins In 15-Year Period

When you judge the top college football teams in history, certainly longevity has to rank among your most important factors.  

With Boise State's 42-14 win over Colorado State yesterday, Boise State has now eclipsed the modern record for the most wins in a 15-year period.  The great Seminole teams from 1987-2001 held the existing mark of 160-23-1, but the Broncos topped that mark with their win yesterday.  Since 1998, Boise State is now 161-29, and they have two games to play to try to add to their total.

Boise State Breaks Own Modern Record for Most Wins In 11-Year Period

With Boise State's 42-14 win over Colorado State, the Broncos broke their own existing modern record for the most wins by a college football team in an 11-year period.  Last season, Boise State set the modern mark with an 11-year record of 126-17 (from 2001-2011).  But the 2002-2012 Broncos have now won 127 games against 15 defeats with two games to play.

Boise State Sets Modern Record for Most Wins In 14-Year Period

When Bobby Bowden's Florida State Seminoles consistently were among the best teams in the nation from 1987-2000, and put together a 152-19-1 mark, it seemed like a safe modern record.  That is until Boise State came along.

Boise State tied that record last season when they put together a 152-27 record from 1998-2011.  Now, the record belongs exclusively to the Broncos.  The Broncos have now won 155 games over a 14-year period that began in 1999.  Boise State is 155-24 in that 14-year span with two games remaining.

Boise State Ties Alabama For Sixth Place All-Time for Most Consecutive Nine-Win Seasons

With Boise State's 42-14 win over Colorado State tonight, the Broncos have now won nine or more games in 11 consecutive seasons.  That ties Boise State with the legendary Alabama teams from 1971-1981 for sixth place all-time.  

Nebraska put together the sensational record of 33 straight years in winning nine or more games from 1969-2001.  The Cornhuskers are in the stratosphere in this category with a 19-season lead on the next best team.

Boise State Third Team in College Football History To Win Seven Consecutive Games in 11 Straight Seasons

One of the more interesting factoids about Boise’s successful football run is this one—the Broncos have put together streaks of seven or more wins in a row in their last 11 seasons. Boise State set the modern record back in 2012 and has extended that streak.  Boise State is the first team since 1903 to accomplish this and only the fourth team in history. 

Princeton holds the all-time record with 21 consecutive years of winning seven consecutive games.  The Tigers did it from 1883-1903.  Yale is second by achieving the feat from 1886-1898 (13 straight years).  And now Boise State is third.  Harvard did it 10 straight years (1886-1895) while Pennsylvania (1891-1898) and Michigan (1969-1976) had streaks of eight years. 

Boise State Sets All-Time College Football Record for Winning Seasons Percentage

Boise State has now become the only team in college football history to have a winning seasons percentage above 88%.  The Broncos have posted winning seasons in 15 of their 17 years in major college football, a percentage of 88.2%.  Alabama is next with 84.6% (88 of 104 seasons) while Notre Dame has enjoyed winning seasons in 91 of 111 seasons (82.0%).

For purposes of comparison, a team must have won at least six games and must have played at least eight games in a season for that season to count in compiling the statistics.

What has happened to the Boise State wrestling team?  This is the same squad that two years ago was a threat to win the national championship.  The Broncos lost to North Dakota State (ouch) last night 24-15.

Bronco Volleyball Team Wins Fourth Straight in Victory Over Nevada

The surging Boise State volleyball team captured its fourth straight win by sweep last night as the Lady Broncos downed Nevada 25-19, 25-17, 25-19 in Reno. All three sets were close until the Broncos pulled away.  Alyssa Gammel led Boise State with 13 kills while Taylor Murphey had 11 and Fiona Jones 9. Boise State is now 15-12 overall and 6-5 in Mountain West Conference play.  The Broncos take on San Diego State Saturday night.

Basketball Double-Header Tonight

The Boise State men's and women's basketball teams begin their seasons tonight with exhibition games in Taco Bell Arena.  The Bronco women host Lewis & Clark State at 5:30, followed by the men's game with Saint Martin.  Good luck to the Bronco hoopsters!

Boise State #19 in Projected BCS Standings

The BCS Standings are actually fascinating to watch if you know what to look for; it's really too bad they are shelving the computers in favor of a backroom committee.  The system in two years will be far less transparent and far less enjoyable for fans to follow.

One thing to look for is the difference in the three components.  Naturally, the two polls pretty much mirror each other because humans are prone to emotion and thus built-in biases.  But if a team is ranked right, all three components will match up rather nicely.  So when you see numbers beside a team like Florida State, you can easily spot that something is amiss.  Numbers that different mean that at least one of those components and more likely two are dreadfully off.  If Florida State is truly a Top 10 team, they would have to play about three more ranked teams to bring that computer rating up when the truth is, they have at most one (Clemson) on their schedule.  You will also note that that same team, Clemson, has zero computer points (They did get rated in one of the six computers.)

What this means is that Florida State is being artificially propped up by the voters when they haven't played a schedule deserving of a high ranking.  Their schedule strength will go up as they sift through the ACC, but it won't approach Top 10 in the computers.  Often what will happen is the team ranked too high will lose somewhere down the road, bringing the human polls more in line with the computers.  And, the computer rating will go up somewhat (as long as they keep winning) to get closer to the polls.  

Obviously if some teams are overrated you will have the exact opposite situation for other teams.  Case in point--Rutgers, which is #10 in the computers but much lower in the polls.  Rutgers has played a much-more worthy schedule in the tough Big East than either of the two ACC teams.  It doesn't mean they'll finish the season higher--they still have to win, but again it points out that something has to give.  Another such example is Texas Tech.

These projections are slightly different than the early morning projections, and differences of less than 12 points reflects the margin of error, so the official BCS Standings will deviate somewhat from the projections shown below.  They are simply meant to give you an idea what the official Standings look like.
