Felix 3rd in the World in the Decathlon Long Jump at the 2012 Olympics

Boise State's Kurt Felix may not medal in the competition, but he's already accomplished a major feat, taking third place among decathletes at the 2012 Summer Olympics with a long jump of 7.63 meters.  Felix scored 967 points for his effort and now has1,801 points total, good for ninth place after two events.

At the NCAA Championships, Felix registered a 7.40 in the long jump for 910 points.  After two events earlier this summer, Kurt had 1,793 points.

As expected, Blue Through and Through is first in Idaho with this information.  A check of all media sites shows that the competition is sleeping...Keep that in mind when you select who you want to get your Bronco news from.

Felix Runs 11.12 in 100

Kurt Felix of Boise State ran an 11.12 in the 100-meter dash, the first event of the decathlon at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.  That gave Felix 834 points to start the competition; he's in 23rd place after the 100.

At the NCAA Championships, which Felix won, Kurt ran a 10.90 for 883 points.

Kurt Felix Set to Compete in 2012 Summer Olympics Tomorrow

Boise State's Kurt Felix will begin competition in the decathlon in London at the Summer Olympics.  Felix is the defending NCAA Champion and will compete for his native country of Grenada.

The first event is the 100-meter dash, set for 3:10 A.M. Boise time.

Rome Finishes 31st in Discus at London Summer Games

Former Boise State standout Jarred Rome finished 31st in the discus at the 2012 Olympics earlier this morning in London.  Rome recorded fouls on his first two throws before landing a throw of 195-5 on this final attempt.  The top 12 advanced to tomorrow's finals.

Defending gold medalist Gerd Kanter of Estonia led qualifying with a throw of 218 feet.

2012 Boise State Soccer Preview

Fall camp is underway for the Boise State soccer team as they prepare for one of the earliest openings ever August 17 against New Mexico State.  The Broncos were 2-4-1 in their debut season in the Mountain West Conference and 8-11-1 overall.  Boise State finished fifth in the conference during the regular season, dropping a 2-0 decision to UNLV in the conference playoffs.  Seven of the Top 10 scorers and 10 players who started five or more games last season return for Coach Steve Lucas.


But the defense took a major hit when star goalkeeper Liz Ruiz and defensemen Lindsay Roberts and Serena Montoya graduated.  The departures of leading scorer Kati Lucas (7 goals and 15 points) and middle fielders Lauren Hickok, Ashley Walsh and Chelsea Robinson also left big holes in the Bronco lineup.

Erica Parks returns to the Boise State lineup at forward after starting 11 games last season.  Parks scored just once last year but she has 15 career goals (sixth all-time at Boise State) and was a key part of the 2009 WAC championship team.  


"Erica is ready to breakout again," Lucas said. "The thing about Erica is we just need her to be dangerous in whatever way. If she's not scoring goals she can help us to score goals. It's not so much that we need her to finish with 10 or 12 goals. we just need her to be in dangerous spots and get chances. If we are getting chances we are doing the right things."


Eble Harris, a transfer from UC Riverside, is expected to battle for the other starting spot with junior Ashley Hruby, redshirt freshman K.T. Clayton and true freshman Anna-Marie Popma.  Harris did not score last season but did provide an assist and had nine shots on goal.  Hruby had two goals and five shots on goal for the Broncos in 2011.


Clayton started for the state championship club team and scored 12 goals her senior year as an all-conference performer at Kent Mountain View High School in Kent, Washington.  Popma was a four year starter at Tualatin High School in Oregon, leading her team to a 6A state championship last season.  Popma was an all-conference performer in each of her four seasons including being named player of the year as a junior and a senior.  Popma was named Oregon State 6A Player of the Year as a senior, when she scored the 100th goal of her high interscholastic career in the state championship game. 


The Broncos are loaded at middle fielder; six players with more than five starts return for Coach Lucas.  Katie Oehring, Tylyn Hughes and Gabby Garcia form a strong nucleus and Boise State is hoping to have a healthy Brandy Hickcox as well.  In addition to that foursome, Shannon Schueren was second on the team in goals (3), points (8) and corner kicks (12), despite only starting three games. 

Oehring started 18 games last season and had three assists and led the team with 20 corner kicks.  Garcia started 13 games while Hughes started 10.  Lucas would like to see both take more shots this fall.  Hickcox started all 23 games as a freshman on the WAC championship team, but played just once in 2010 and just six games last year.  


Rebe Wolverton also scored twice for the Broncos and will see a lot of action.  Other middle fielders vying for playing time include Jenna Griggs, Brianne Favatella, Kallie Neimann, Janelle Jin, Ali Clarkson and Noelle Kolb.  In addition, Lucas secured the talent of Brooke Heidemann of Rocky Mountain High School in the 2012 recruiting class.  Heidemann was named the Idaho Girls Soccer Gatorade Player of the Year last season.  


"Our returning set is really good," Lucas said. "They had a great spring and they are starting to form some cohesiveness. Their fitness, willingness to work and knowing where each other are will play big roles in our success."

Mikhaila Bowden started in all 20 games last season and Mandy Nader started in 16, and those pair will be called upon to bring along their new starting mate on defense.  That is expected to be junior Kallie Neimann, who moves back to her natural position of defense after spending the first two years of her career as a midfielder.  Avery Salisbury is the only other returning defender, and freshman Dominique Banks will also fight for playing time.  

Salisbury, who started seven games last season for Boise State, helped her high school team win four league titles and she played on the same state championship club team as Popma.  Banks was an all-conference player for Los Alamitos High School all four seasons and helped her club team, Legends Breakway, reach the National Championships earlier this year.  Lucas brought in freshmen Kelsey Nicassio and Kelsey Witker and one or both of them could also play this fall.


"We have a good mix of experienced players and young players on that back line," Lucas said. "Between the recruits coming in this year and a few returners we will be in good shape back there."


Replacing Ruiz in the net won't be easy.  Ruiz holds career records in wins, shutouts, save percentage and goals-against average at Boise State.  Redshirt sophomore Maddy McDevitt will contend with senior Megan Blanchard for the starting spot.  Blanchard had a goal-against average of 1.88 last season while McDevitt's was an even 2.00.  


"We're a team that wants to keep the ball and that is never going to change," Lucas said. "Our athleticism and ability to do that has increased which is great. We want to be able to play faster while still keeping the ball."


The schedule may be the toughest in school history, and it is certainly one of the earliest.  The Broncos take on Seattle in an exhibition August 11, then open with New Mexico State at home on Friday, August 17.  The contest against the Aggies will be part of the Holiday Inn Tournament through Sunday, August 19.  


Boise State makes its road debut against Washington State, one of three opponents who qualified for the 2011 NCAA Tournament (the others are Montana and New Mexico).  The Broncos also have an exciting East Coast road trip to Navy and Pennsylvania.


It is a great mix of experience and talented youth, a combination that usually results in good seasons.  If an aggressive offense can play ball control and the new Bronco goalkeeper is solid, Boise State should join the upper echelon in the Mountain West.

Boise State at the Olympics

Boise State will enter two athletes in the Olympics in London.  It is the first time that two former Broncos are in the same Olympic Games.


August 6, former All-American Jarred Rome will begin competition in the discus throw while current National Decathlon Champion Kurt Felix will go for the Gold August 8-9 in that event in London.


Rome kicks it off for the Broncos with competition getting underway at 3 a.m. MDT Monday morning.

Just Over a Month Until School Starts

Boise State-Washington Game Moved

 Boise State's game at the University of Washington has been changed to August 31, the first game at the newly-renovated Husky Stadium.  Boise State has also announced the addition of Tennessee-Martin to the schedule.

In addition to those two games, Boise State will travel to BYU and play at Southern Mississippi, plus make their debut in the Big East Conference.  In the final 2011 college football polls, BYU finished #19 and Southern Miss #25.  While Washington wasn't ranked last season, the hope is that they will join those two in the rankings to give Boise State three out-of-conference teams in the Top 25, plus the tough Big East schedule.  The Broncos will likely need a minimum of five Top 25 opponents to have a shot at the national title.

Kurt Felix is the 2011-2012 Bronco Male Athlete of the Year

In close voting over the last two months, National Decathlon Champion Kurt Felix edged football quarterback Kellen Moore as the 2011-2012 Bronco Male Athlete of the Year.  Felix received 47% of the vote to 42% for Moore, while Doug Martin gathered 8% support.

Felix began the year winning the Jackson's Open long jump with a mark of 23-feet, 6.25 inches and took the high jump at the Blue and Orange Opener with a leap of 6-10.25.

Kurt won the high jump (6-10.25) and the long jump (24-6.50) at the Bronco Classic.  At the final tune-up before the Mountain West Indoor Championships, the Boise State Team Challenge, Felix won the heptathlon with 5,771 points, more than 300 better than his nearest challenger.

Felix won the heptathlon at the Mountain West Indoor Championships with 5,703 points, 295 more than the second-place finisher.  Felix was first among heptathletes in the 60-meter dash, the shot put, the long jump and the high jump and was second in the 60-meter hurdles.  

Kurt finished second in the long jump with a mark of 24-7.25 and was third in the high jump (6-10.25) and the triple jump (49-9.75).  Felix was named the Mountain West Outstanding Performer and the Top Point Performer after scoring 30 team points for the Broncos.


Kurt qualified for the National Indoor Track & Field Championships in Nampa, Idaho in the heptathlon, and was fourth in the nation with two events remaining--the pole vault and the 1,000 meters.  Felix's hopes were dashed when did not clear a height in the pole vault.  He did finish ninth in the long jump with a seasonal best of 24-feet, 10 inches.


Felix and the Broncos moved outdoors, and Kurt proved he was going to be a factor in the decathlon from the beginning.  In the first meet, the Texas Relays, Felix finished fourth in the event with 7,921 points.  Felix improved that score with 7,952 points to win the decathlon at the Mt. SAC Relays.  


Felix won the decathlon at the Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships with 7,757 points winning the long jump, the high jump, the shot put, the 400-meters and the javelin portions of the competition.   Felix also won the javelin throw with a mark of 207-feet, 3-inches, finished fifth in the high jump (6-6.75) and ninth in the long jump with a mark of 22-10.


Felix automatically qualified for the NCAA National Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the decathlon.  In third place with two events to go, Felix threw the javelin 227-feet, 6-inches to earn 880 points and take the lead by 147 points over Florida State's Gonzalo Barroilhet.  Felix had 7,400 points after nine events to 7,253 for Barroilhet and 7,233 for Romaine Martin of Texas-Arlington.  The final event was the grueling 1,500-meter run.  Felix crossed the finish line with a superb time of 4:42, seven seconds shy of his personal best.


That gave Felix a school record 8,062 points and he captured the national championship.  Kurt will represent his native country of Grenada in the Summer Olympics in London.

Boise State Has Withdrawn from Mountain West

Boise State has officially withdrawn from the Mountain West Conference, according to UNLV president Neal Smatresk.  The letter arrived ahead of the midnight deadline that the school had to notify the conference it was leaving.


Had Boise State not done this, it would have had to pay an additional $5 million penalty, plus forfeit its share of bowl revenue.

The deadline for notifying the Mountain West that Boise State is leaving is midnight tonight and as of yet, they have not done so.


My hunch is that the Broncos will keep all their sports in the Mountain West unless the Big East can come up with a better offer than it has to this point.

Another Week, Another Recruit

Boise State has received word that Mat Boesen, a tight end from Torrance, California, has committed to play football for the Broncos.  The word we are getting is that Boesen was recruited as a linebacker.  With 6-4, 220 size, he should work out there very nicely.


Boesen had 50 tackles last season and caught 31 passes for 419 yards and three touchdowns on offense.  As a defensive end, Mat reads, shreds, and attacks the ball carrier.  He has a great motor and good instincts.  Boise State's defense is becoming known for swarming to the ball and Boesen is right up that alley.

Rome Earns Spot on U.S. Olympic Team

Former Boise State All-American Jarred Rome is going to London!

Rome placed second in the discus at the United States Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon, no less, to qualify for the U.S. team this summer.  Rome threw the discus 207-10 to earn his second trip to the Olympics, having competed in 2004 in the discus.

Rome was a six-time All-American at Boise State and will compete August 6-7 in London.  Jarred joins Boise State senior Kurt Felix as this year will mark a new first--the first time two Bronco athletes will compete in the same Olympic Games.  Felix will represent his native country of Grenada in the decathlon.

McFarland Will Join Boise State Gymnasts

Molly McFarland, who finished 13th at the 2012 Junior Olympic National Championships, has signed a letter of intent to join perennial national contender Boise State.

McFarland, from Costa Mesa, California, competed as a Level 10 gymnast for Team OC Gymnastics.  She finished sixth at the 2012 regional and fourth in the 2012 SoCal State Championships in the all-around.  

In addition to being a top gymnast, McFarland is an Honor Roll member, the winner of the 2007 Norman Stillwell Award, the 2011 Daughters of the American Revolution Award winner and the U.S. Marine Distinguished Athlete Award winner.  

"Molly will bring great character and work ethic, as well as many high level skills to our team," said Boise State co-head coach Neil Resnick. 

McFarland joins Krystine Jacobsen and Maddie Krentz, who signed NLI's in the fall of 2011, as freshmen on the Boise State gymnastics 2012-13 roster.  

Mountain West Conference Denied Automatic BCS Berth

Despite the fact that one of its teams (Hint:  they play on a blue field) has been one of the most successful BCS teams since its existence, the BCS denied the Mountain West Conference an automatic berth in one of its four major bowls.  


Let's see:  Play in a conference that doesn't get an automatic berth in the next two years or play in a conference that does get an automatic berth the next two years.  Hmmm.

Boise State Student-Athletes Excel in Classroom

The Mountain West Conference announced that 70 Boise State student-athletes received the 2011-2012 Scholar-Athlete Award.  The 70 Broncos represented 83 total awards.  Boise State was second to New Mexico's 106 awards in the conference, while TCU was third with 65, not too far behind the level of Boise State.

Erin Kohlbeck (swimming and diving) and Will Lohman (track and field) are on top of the Mountain West list with 4.00 grade point averages.

Hume competed in four tournaments during the fall, going 13-4 in singles.  He was 4-1 in singles play at the All-American Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada, advancing to the round of 32.  Damian won the ITA Mountain Regional Championship in Las Vegas in October, going 7-0.  Hume defeated Jadon Phillips of New Mexico 6-1, 6-3 in the championship game.  Damian advanced to the ITA National Indoor Tennis Championship at New York City, where he was 0-2.  Hume lost to #20 Alex Musialek of Kentucky, 6-0, 6-7, 6-3 and #16 Daniel Nguyen of USC 6-3, 6-4. 

Hume and the Broncos moved to the Spring, and Damian did his part in the Blue-Gray tournament against #21 Tennessee.  He defeated Tennessee's Brandon Fickey 6-2, 6-1 but unfortunately none of his Bronco teammates followed suit and Boise State lost 4-1.

In a match with Arizona of the PAC-12, Hume and his doubles partner Scott Sears won 7-6 (7-2) and Damian defeated Giacomo Miccini of Arizona in singles, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (10-4), as the Broncos had no trouble in a 7-0 victory.  Hume helped Boise State win the Spring Break Classic 6-1 over UAB.  Hume & Sears won their doubles match 8-6 to secure the doubles point for the Broncos, then defeated David Zimmerman in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.  

Hume was selected as the Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week after going 3-1.  He defeated J.T. Sundling of TCU 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 after teaming with Sears to win the doubles match 9-8 (7-3).  Hume also defeated Ben Dunbar of New Mexico 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.

Hume and Sears fell in their doubles match in the Mountain West semifinals 8-3 and Hume's singles match was unfinished when Boise State clinched the team victory 4-0.  In the conference championship game, Hume and Sears lost 8-6 to Nick Chappell and Will Stein of TCU and Damian's singles match was unfinished with Damian leading 7-5, 5-3 when the Broncos clinched the championship 4-0.

Hume and Sears were named All-Mountain West in doubles as the duo had an 8-4 record.  Hume was an amazing 17-2 in duals this season, including a perfect 5-0 conference season.  Hume finished the year as the highest-ranked Bronco player at #69.

Boise State automatically qualified for the NCAA National Tennis Championships and the Broncos were sent all the way to Atlanta, Georgia for the opening round.  Boise State won the doubles point and Hume helped the Broncos get off to a 3-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Florida State's Blake Davis in singles.  However, FSU won the remaining three singles matches to eliminate Boise State 4-3.

Doug Martin

Martin started 12 games for Boise State at halfback and played in all 13 games for the Bronco football team.

Martin had 1,299 rushing yards last fall, fourth-most in Boise State history.  His 263 carries rank third in the single-season list and Martin's 16 rushing touchdowns also rank third all-time.  Doug averaged 99.92 rushing yards per game, second in the Mountain West and 23rd nationally.  His scoring average of 8.77 points per game was also second in the MW and 23rd in the country.

Doug had seven 100-yard rushing games and rushed 20 times for a career-high 200 yards against Colorado State.  Martin was chosen as Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week for his effort against the Rams.  Martin's 36 carries against San Diego State are tied for second-most in school history.  

Martin also had 28 receptions for 255 yards and two touchdowns.    Doug had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Arizona State in the Las Vegas Bowl, as Martin had a school-record 301 all-purpose yards (151 rushing, 26 receiving and 124 on kickoff returns) against the PAC-12 team.  

Martin had 10 kickoff returns last fall for 338 yards and the touchdown, an average of 33.8 per return.  Doug had 145.54 all-purpose yards per game to rank 20th in the nation.

Martin was named to the All-Mountain West football team.

Shea McClellin

McClellin started in all 13 games for Boise State and had 50 tackles, third-most on the Broncos.  Shea led the team with seven sacks and was second with 12.5 tackles for loss.  McClellin also intercepted two passes, deflected two passes, forced a fumble and blocked a kick.  He was sixth in the Mountain West in both sacks and tackles for loss.  McClellin was named to the All-Mountain West team.

Kellen Moore

Moore started all 13 games for Boise State, completing 326-439 passes for 3,800 yards and 43 touchdowns against just nine interceptions.  Moore led the nation in passing percentage (74.3%) and was third in passing efficiency (175.19) with the 16th-best mark in NCAA history.  Kellen set school records for single-season completions and touchdown passes.  He was second in the nation in TD passes and also established a Mountain West record.  

Kellen was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week four times.  He had multiple touchdown passes in 26 consecutive games, finishing the season with the longest active streak in the nation.  Moore's games against  and Colorado State (26-30, .867), New Mexico (28-33, .849) and Georgia (28-34, .824) rank fourth, sixth and ninth, respectively, on Boise State's all-time single-game completion percentage list.  Moore's games against Colorado State and New Mexico are the two highest single-game performances of any Bronco quarterback with over 30 attempts.  

Moore was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year and first-team All-Mountain West and honorable mention All-America by the Associated Press.  The Touchdown Club of Columbus named him as the nation's best quarterback for the second straight year, and announced that the award would now be called "The Kellen Moore Award".

Moore broke Texas quarterback Colt McCoy's record of 45 and finished as the all-time winningest quarterback with a record of 50-3 (.943).  Moore finished his career with 142 touchdown passes, second in NCAA history, and his 14,667 career passing yards ranks fifth all-time.  Moore is the first player in college football history to record four seasons with both 3,000 yards of total offense and 3,000 yards passing.  Moore's 16 300-yard career passing games set a new Boise State record.  He posted his third career 400-yard passing game, second-most in school history.    

Nate Potter

Nate started all 13 games at left tackle, extending his streak of consecutive starts to 34.  He led an offensive line that helped the Broncos finish first in sacks allowed (.62 per game).  Boise State was fifth in the nation in scoring (44.23), ninth in total offense (481.31), 11th in passing (309.38) and 40th in rushing (171.92).  

Nate was named to the Capital One Academic All-America team, the first Boise State football player to earn first-team academic honors since 1978.  He became Boise State's second consensus All-American (after Ryan Clady), as Nate was selected to All-America teams by The Sporting News, the Football Writers' Association of America, CBSSports.com and Yahoo Sports.  Potter was second team Walter Camp All-America.  He was one of two unanimous first-team All-Mountain West selections.

Tara Glover is the 2011-2012 Bronco Female Athlete of the Year

Tara Glover received the most votes in a poll of Bronco fans and is the 2011-2012 Bronco Female Athlete of the Year.


Glover, a sophomore sparkplug for the Boise State softball team, received 31% of the vote to edge senior gymnast Amy Glass, who garnered 23%.  Outfielder Devon Bridges was third with 13% followed by swimmer Amber Boucher at 10%.


Glover batted .481 this season (2nd in the Mountain West) for the Broncos with a .515 on-base percentage (3rd in the conference) to help Boise State finish second in the Mountain West Conference.  She led the MWC with a school-record 88 hits and 18 stolen bases, Tara's slugging percentage of .708 was second in the league and her 54 runs ranked third.  Tara established a new Mountain West sophomore record in hits, breaking the record set by San Diego State's Kellie Nordhagen in 2000, and her total is fourth all-time in conference history.  Glover reached base in a school record 37 consecutive games, and she finished the season by reaching base in 49 of the Broncos' 51 games.  Glover also hit in a record-tying 13 consecutive games.


In conference play, Tara hit an unbelievable .622 with an on-base percentage of .638.  Both rank second in conference history and her 1.067 slugging percentage is third-best all-time in the Mountain West.  Glover's 28 hits against MW foes ranks seventh all-time, cracking the list with only 12 games when all other spots are occupied by players with at least 18 games.  Tara recorded a hit in 11 of the 12 games, including 10 multi-hit games.  In conference games, Glover led the league in hits, batting average and stolen bases (6), while ranking second in runs (17), doubles (six) and slugging percentage.  Tara also hit four homers and a triple.  

Glover was named Co-Mountain West Player of the Year and was also honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Pacific Region Second Team.  One week later, Glover became the first softball All-American as she was named to the Third Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

There is one more update to come in two weeks.  It involves other sports that Boise State does not sponsor, so #67 is the best that Boise State will finish in Athletic Director Mark Coyle's first year at the post.


New Mexico had a good year at #45, the highest rank for a Mountain West school.  Departing TCU and San Diego State at #64 rank just ahead of the Broncos at #56.


Boise State is ahead of Utah, the PAC-12's newest member, as well as Texas Tech, Oregon State, Georgia Tech, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Washington State.  

Del Toro and Dewey Sign to Wrestle at Boise State

Boise State has been one of the premier wrestling spots in the nation for several years.  Last year did not work out so good, as the team found itself in a rebuilding phase.  Coach Greg Randall took steps to strengthen the program with the signing of two student-athletes to letters of intent.

Austin Dewey and Kadyn Del Toro will join the Broncos next season.  Dewey was the 2012 5A State Champion at 160 pounds from Centennial High School in Meridian.  He finished second at the 2011 FILA Nationals, which enabled him to qualify as an alternate for the United States World Team.  Del Toro is a three-time All-State wrestler at 171 pounds from Curtis High School (4A) in University Place, Washington.

 "We're excited to have Austin and Kadyn join our lineup next year," said Randall.  "Both are strong students and will add depth to our lineup in the future. These two have very strong work ethics and love to wrestle, which fits perfectly with our program."


Boise State returns 10 starters from last squad's team, including four who went to the NCAA Tournament.  All-American Jason Chamberlain also returns this year after redshirting as season.

Bronco Gymnastics Program Returns to WAC

Boise State has announced that its nationally-ranked gymnastics program will return to the Western Athletic Conference beginning this year.


The gymnasts did not have a conference last year, when they were ranked 13th in the nation.  The Broncos competed in the WAC for 10 years, winning two regular season championships and three postseason tournament.


"We are thrilled to be back in the WAC and look forward to some exciting competition in the 2012 season," said co-head coach Tina Bird.

The 2012-13 WAC gymnastics team members include: Boise State (affiliate), Sacramento State (affiliate), San Jose State, Southern Utah (affiliate), University of Denver and Utah State. The 2013 WAC Championship gymnastics meet will be hosted by Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah.
