Construction is well underway for the new Boise State Athletic Center, to be located on the North side of Bronco Stadium, as well as the new bleachers for the South end zone.

Broncos Begin NCAA West Regional Today
Seventeen student-athletes from Boise State will participate in the NCAA West Regional Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas beginning today. To qualify for Nationals, a competitor must finish in the Top 12 in his or her event. Decathlete Kurt Felix has already qualified for the NCAA National Championships as the fourth seed in the country and that event is not contested this week.
Eetu Viitala will be the first Bronco to compete; he's slated to participate in the Long Jump at noon M.D.T. Sasa Kampic will test her ability in the javelin while Rolando Trammel competes in the first of two events for him, the 400-meter hurdles, at 3:30. Drew O'donoghue-McDonald and Charlie Petrie will run in the 1,500 meters today while Will Lohman competes in the shot put and Racquel Jones takes part in the long jump at 4:30. Scott Foley is entered in the 10,000-meter qualifying at 8 p.m. tonight while Emma Bates challenges the field in the women's 10,000 at 8:40.

2012 Bronco Coach of the Year
It's time to consider the nominees for 2012 Bronco Coach of the Year. Review the resumes below and cast your vote at the top left of the web site!
Tina Bird & Neil Resnick, Gymnastics
The Bronco gymnasts did not participate in a conference, but they were invited to the NCAA Regional in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where they finished third. Boise State finished the season ranked #14 in the nation. Senior Amy Glass won the prestigious AAI Award, the gymnastics equivalent of the Heisman in football, and represented the Broncos in the all-around competition at the NCAA Championships.
During the year, the Broncos defeated #16 Washington and lost a narrow decision to #8 Oregon State.
Kristin Hill, Swimming and Diving
The Boise State swimming and diving team captured its third consecutive conference title and became the first sport in school history to win a Mountain West title. Down by one point entering the final event, the Bronco relay team set a new conference record in winning the event and securing the team championship for Boise State. The Broncos finished with 747 points to 742 for San Diego State in the closest meet in league history. Boise State advanced a record number of swimmers to the NCAA Championships, where they finished 47th.
Jessica Bottelberghe (100 and 200-yard backstroke), Amber Boucher (50 and 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly), Amanda Burnett (one-meter and platform diving), Jennifer Cahill (500 and 1,650-yard freestyle), Ciera Cortney (one-meter and platform diving), Heather Harper (100 and 200-yard breaststroke), Rachel Heaney (200-yard butterfly and 400-yard individual medley), Stevie Hughey (50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly), Emily Irvin (100-yard breaststroke), Sydney Johansen (100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley), Tana Loan (three-meter and platform diving), Chelsea Miller (200-yard breaststroke and 400-yard individual medley), Stephanie North (50, 100, and 200-yard freestyle) and Christine Raininger (200 and 400-yard individual medley) were named to the All-Mountain West Team.
Additionally, the Boise State 200, 400 and 800-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay teams were named All-Mountain West.
Greg Patton, Men's Tennis
The Bronco men's tennis team finished the season 26-7, having gone undefeated in the Mountain West regular season and then capturing the postseason tournament. Boise State traveled to the NCAA Regional in Athens, Georgia, where they lost 4-3 in the first round to Florida State. The Broncos finished the season ranked #37 in the country. During the year, Boise State outpointed Washington and Fresno State and took on Auburn, Mississippi State and Tennessee.
Damian Hume, James Meredith and Andy Bettles were selected to the All-Mountain West team in singles while Meredith & Nathan Sereke and Hume & Scott Sears were chosen to the All-MWC doubles team.
Chris Petersen, Football
The Bronco football team finished 7th in the BCS Standings, 6th in the Coaches' Poll and 8th in the AP Poll after finishing the season 12-1. Boise State was 8-1 in the Mountain West Conference, finishing second, with their only loss to #13 TCU. The Broncos opened the season winning at #20 Georgia.
Offensive tackle Chris Potter became just the second consensus All-American in school history. Quarterback Kellen Moore was selected as the MWC Offensive Player of the Year while Potter, running back Doug Martin, wide receiver Tyler Shoemaker, defensive ends Tyrone Crawford and Shea McClellin and safety George Iloka joined Moore on the All-Mountain West team.
Leon Rice, Men's Basketball
Rice guided his team to a 13-17 record including three conference wins in their first season in the tough Mountain West Conference. Boise State took on #1 seed San Diego State in the opening round of the MWC Tournament, losing on a three-point shot at the buzzer, 65-62.
Erin Thorpe, Softball
In only their fourth season, the Boise State softball team finished the year 34-20 overall and two games behind San Diego State in the Mountain West Conference. Boise State's schedule included Florida, UCLA, Washington, Notre Dame, Arizona State, two games with Minnesota, three games against Oregon and three games with #9 Texas A&M. Centerfielder Tara Glover was named Co-Mountain West Player of the Year and Western Region Second Team. Glover was joined by pitcher Aubray Zell, right fielder Devon Bridges and second baseman Kellie Caplan on the All-Mountain West team.

The Boise State Victory Flag
I wanted to share with you the latest project that I have been working on. As you know, I think it vitally important to honor tradition and past achievements at Boise State. We have been working with the Boise State R.O.T.C. to begin a tradition of honoring past conference champions, postseason tournament and bowl winners and national champions.
The great R.O.T.C. people at Boise State have agreed to carry the Boise State flag for all Bronco football games. It will follow the American flag and the state of Idaho flag to midfield for the presentation of colors prior to the playing and singing of the National Anthem. The flag will also include 36" banners saluting all national champions (both team and individual), postseason tournament and bowl winners and conference champions from all sports in the history of the school. The banners each have a grommet, from which they can be attached to the top of the flag. While not in use, the flag will be available for public display on campus.
The flag will make its premiere at Homecoming this fall. We will also kick off an annual Homecoming tradition prior to the football game, in which each sport that earns a banner from the previous year will be on hand to pin its banner to the flag. For this year, the men's tennis team will pin their banners for regular season Mountain West championship and postseason tournament championship, and the swimming & diving team will pin their banner for the Mountain West championship to the Victory Flag.

Bronco fans have seen some incredible football, being the passengers on one of the most high-energy, fasten your seatbelt rides of the last 100 years. Beginning with Lyle Smith, all the team has done is win. The BJC Broncos were 199-61-9 with a junior college national championship in 1958. The Four Horsemen of Boise State won the national title in Division I-AA in 1980. Since Boise State became a four-year school in 1968, it's been a climb to the upper echelon of college football, with the Broncos going 378-144-2 during that time.
That adds up to a sparkling record of 577-205-11, just 23 wins shy of 600 after only 79 years, and 22 wins shy of 400 wins as a four-year school after just 44 years.

Which Perennial Top 10 Team Right Now Is Left Out of "The Top Four Conferences"
"We're not getting the piece of the pie we used to be getting, so we're taking our ball and playing our own game."
That's what the SEC, Big 12, Big 10 and Pac-12 have decided. Tired of being beaten by Boise State, Utah, TCU, Fresno State and others, those four conferences are trying to form their own division at the exclusion of the other D-1 conferences.
With all the upheaval, here is the pertinent question. Understand that, and you understand everything.
Which perennial Top 10 team is left out?
Well, they already snapped up Utah and TCU, the other legitimate contenders for postseason play that weren't in the major conferences. But there's one left, that in fact has been more successful than either of those two. Yep, it's Boise State. The Broncos have made a home in the Top 10, or at least the Top 15, for the last decade. There's no other successful team that the big boys have to deal with.
So will the top four conferences include Boise State or leave them as "the glaring example" of a highly successful team that was kicked from the table?

But this isn't over. This kind of thing ultimately may come down to the courts and/or Congress. Then again, they too might look the other way.
NCAA West Regional Track & Field Championships
Boise State may have 17 qualifiers for next week's NCAA Outdoor Track & Field West Regional Championship, but unlike in years past, there are no Broncos expected to finish in the Top 5 in their respective events.
Mele Vaisima perhaps has the best chance to advance to the National Championships. Mele is ranked 12th in the West in the hammer. Teammate Alyssa Osai also qualified for the hammer and is ranked 26th. Emma Bates is running well and hopes to advance in the 5,000 after winning the Mountain West Championship. Bates is ranked #22 in the West in that event and #28 in the 10,000. On the men's side, Chase Sexton will be making his third trip to the Regional and is seeded 28th in the discus.
Other men competing next weekend are Allan Schroeder and Sawyer Bosch (20th and 23rd, respectively, in the steeplechase), Rolando Trammel (#25 in the West in the 400-meter hurdles and #30 in the 110-meter hurdles), Justin Malnes (33rd in the 110 hurdles), Drew O'donoghue-McDonald (#36 in the 1,500 meters), senior Trevor Kraychir (#39 in the hammer), Charlie Petrie (#44 in the 1,500), Eetu Viitala (#42 in the West in the long jump), Scott Foley (44th in the 10,000), Will Lohman (#47 in the shot put and #48 in the hammer)
Deb Johnson is ranked 33rd in the triple jump, Racquel Jones makes her second trip to Regionals in the long jump, where she is seeded 43rd, while Sasa Kampic is seeded 48th in the javelin.
The West Regional begins Thursday, May 24 in Austin, Texas. The top 12 qualify for the National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, June 6-9. Kurt Felix has already punched his ticket to the NCAA's in the decathlon, where he is ranked #4 in the country. The decathlon is not contested at Regionals.
Mele Vaisima perhaps has the best chance to advance to the National Championships. Mele is ranked 12th in the West in the hammer. Teammate Alyssa Osai also qualified for the hammer and is ranked 26th. Emma Bates is running well and hopes to advance in the 5,000 after winning the Mountain West Championship. Bates is ranked #22 in the West in that event and #28 in the 10,000. On the men's side, Chase Sexton will be making his third trip to the Regional and is seeded 28th in the discus.
Other men competing next weekend are Allan Schroeder and Sawyer Bosch (20th and 23rd, respectively, in the steeplechase), Rolando Trammel (#25 in the West in the 400-meter hurdles and #30 in the 110-meter hurdles), Justin Malnes (33rd in the 110 hurdles), Drew O'donoghue-McDonald (#36 in the 1,500 meters), senior Trevor Kraychir (#39 in the hammer), Charlie Petrie (#44 in the 1,500), Eetu Viitala (#42 in the West in the long jump), Scott Foley (44th in the 10,000), Will Lohman (#47 in the shot put and #48 in the hammer)
Deb Johnson is ranked 33rd in the triple jump, Racquel Jones makes her second trip to Regionals in the long jump, where she is seeded 43rd, while Sasa Kampic is seeded 48th in the javelin.

Boise State's Greg Patton Named Mountain Region Men's Tennis Coach of the Year
Legendary Boise State tennis coach was named the Mountain Region Men's Tennis Coach of the Year after rebuilding the Broncos into a national power again. Patton also won Regional Coach of the Year in 1994, 1997 and 2004.
Patton, in his 16th year leading the Bronco program, led Boise State to the 2012 Mountain West regular season and tournament championships and a berth in the NCAA Championships, their 15th overall. After a razor-thin defeat to favored Florida State in the tournament, the Broncos ended the season 26-7, but with high hopes for next season.

Glover, Bridges, Caplan and Zell Named to All-Mountain West Team
Centerfielder Tara Glover of the Boise State softball team was named co-Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, while teammates Devon Bridges, Kellie Caplan and Aubray Zell joined her on the all-conference team.
Glover, a transfer from the University of Utah, sizzled in her debut year in Boise, sparking the Bronco offense to new heights. Her .622 batting average, .638 on-base percentage and 1,067 slugging percentage all rank second in the history of the Mountain West for conference games. Glover led the conference in hits, batting average and stolen bases (six) while ranking second in runs (17), doubles (six) and slugging percentage. Glover shares Player of the Year honors with Hayley Miles of San Diego State.

Bronco Team of the Year
It's a tradition! Time to pay tribute to the Broncos of the Year in our annual poll. The first asks you to vote for Team of the Year. Review the information below and then vote in the poll at the top left-hand side on the web site.
Football
The Bronco football team finished 7th in the BCS Standings, 6th in the Coaches' Poll and 8th in the AP Poll after finishing the season 12-1. Boise State was 8-1 in the Mountain West Conference, finishing second.
Gymnastics
The Bronco gymnasts did not participate in a conference, but they were invited to the NCAA Regional in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where they finished third. Boise State finished the season ranked #14 in the nation.
Softball
The Boise State softball team finished the year 34-20 overall and two games behind San Diego State in the Mountain West Conference.
Swimming & Diving
The Boise State swimming and diving team captured its third consecutive conference title and became the first sport in school history to win a Mountain West title. Down by one point entering the final event, the Bronco relay team set a new conference record in winning the event and securing the team championship for Boise State. The Broncos finished with 747 points to 742 for San Diego State in the closest meet in league history. Boise State advanced a record number of swimmers to the NCAA Championships, where they finished 47th.
Men's Tennis
The Bronco men's tennis team finished the season 26-7, having won both the regular season and postseason tournament in the Mountain West Conference. Boise State traveled to the NCAA Regional in Athens, Georgia, where they lost 4-3 in the first round to Florida State. The Broncos probably deserved a spot, but as we told you in the last few weeks, Boise State needed to either sweep San Diego State or win two of three with #9 Texas A&M. They weren't able to close the door, and were thus left out of the field.

Without a finalist in the 200, all Boise State could do was sit and watch. What they saw was Air Force scoring nine points in the event, three over projection, and New Mexico 10, two over projection. Air Force and New Mexico About to Overtake Boise State at Mountain West Outdoor Track Championships
After the triple jump, it is very much going to be between Air Force and New Mexico with Boise State an outside shot. Here are the standings after 11 events:

Boise State Men's Track Team About to Be Overtaken
The lead after a couple days was a fluke lead, and the reality is now setting in. The Boise State men's 4x100-meter relay team finished fifth and Air Force is about to take over the lead. Plus, here comes New Mexico as predicted.

Boise State Women Still Fourth After Nine Events
After a third-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay today, the Boise State women are still in fourth at the Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Broncos have no chance for a team title but are doing better than expected.

Boise State Tennis Team Loses to Florida State 4-3
The Broncos won the doubles point and had a 3-0 lead on Florida State but couldn't shut the door. It was still 3-2 with James Meredith and Nathan Sereke still playing. One of them had to win. But, first Meredith went down and then Sereke lost a tight match in three sets and FSU won the match 4-3.
The Broncos finish 26-7 on the season.

Down to the Wire
All the matches are done except Sereke's.
Nathan Sereke lost a heartbreaking first set 7-6. He was down early 2-0, battled back to 2-2 but just lost another serve and is down 4-2. However, Nathan won the tiebreaker and stayed alive, winning the second set 7-6.
Lock leads 2-1 and had two Break points against Sereke in Game Four of the third set. But Nathan rallied to tie it up at two games apiece and stay alive for now.
My opinion was that if Boise State is going to win, it's up to Sereke. And in fact, Meredith did lose his match so the team match will be decided at #4 singles Nathan is getting a lot of first serves in.
To recap:
The Broncos won the doubles point, and Damian Hume was the first player to win a singles match so Boise State is ahead 2-0.
Andy Bettles won the first set 6-2 and the second set 6-3 to put Boise State ahead 3-0.
Fillipp Pogostkin lost 7-5, 6-4.
Scott Sears lost 6-3, 6-4.
James Meredith lost the first set, 6-1, but then took set #2, 6-3. However, he just lost the third set 6-4 and we are even at three matches apiece.

James Meredith and Nathan Sereke just clinched the doubles point for Boise State, by winning at #1 doubles, 8-5. Meredith served the final game and the fourth time was the charm. After opening up a 40-Love lead, the Broncos lost three consecutive Match points. After Florida State had two Advantages but Meredith and Sereke fought back, finally on Advantage Boise State, the Broncos captured the point, the match, and the doubles point for Boise State. Andy Bettles and Fillippe Pogostkin won at #3 doubles, 8-2.
Damian Hume and Scott Sears, Boise State's #2 doubles team, lost 8-3, so it is up to James and Nathan.

San Diego State Clinches 5th Straight Mountain West Softball Title
After Boise State lost to San Diego State on Sunday, it was just a pipe dream to still somehow win the Mountain West softball title. The Aztecs would have had to lose two of three to UNLV at Las Vegas.
San Diego State won its second game of the series last night with UNLV, 10-3, to clinch the crown and the two teams will play game three this afternoon.
Boise State, meanwhile, pretty much had to win at least two of three with #9 Texas A&M. The Broncos have stood toe to toe with the Aggies in two games, and probably deserve an at-large berth in the NCAA just because they have proven they are not too far behind the #9 team in the land. Unfortunately, close doesn't count with the NCAA, and the Broncos quite possibly will be left out of the field.
The Broncos and Aggies play game three today at 4 p.m. at Mountain Cove Field.
