Key for Boise State Tomorrow is to Stay Loose, Aggressive

In my increasingly long life, I've seen several situations similar to the one the Boise State softball team is in.  The most memorable is one that my favorite baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles, went through.


Coming into a final four-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers in Baltimore, The Orioles were three games behind and needed to win all four games to win the division.  To the shock of everyone but me and Orioles fans, Baltimore took the first three games.  That put the two teams tied and the winner of the final game would take the title.  Very similar to Boise State.  They came into the weekend needing to sweep San Diego State to win the title and in fact, the winner of tomorrow's game very likely will win the conference.


Well, Baltimore played the first three games on fire, they could do no wrong.  The pitching was great, they got tons of hits, and everything was going good.  Then on the fourth day, I remember seeing pictures of the stands with fans who had brooms, indicating a sweep.  Never want to get cocky, especially since you're fortunate enough to even have a shot on the last day, given you predicament.  


But the magic ran out that final day, as Milwaukee clubbed the Orioles to win the division.  The thought I had was that Baltimore played the first three days totally relaxed, because they had nothing to lose.  Milwaukee played tight, because they knew they were one game away and with each passing day, they were desperate to win.  Well, on the last day, the tables were turned.  Now, both teams had to win that final day and I think Baltimore got tight.


Point is, tomorrow, the Bronco players have to approach the game with the same intensity that they have.  Go out and swing at first pitches, take the extra base, go all out to win, because there's nothing to lose.  Everyone favored the four-time NCAA Tournament team San Diego State--nobody expects Boise State to win so stay loose and aggressive. 


To this point, the team has played magnificently.  But they have to have confidence and they have to have the hunger.  That is their only chance.

Boise State Finds a Way to Win Again

Boise State rallied from a 3-0 deficit to pull out a 4-3 win over San Diego State in San Diego this afternoon.


Tara Glover started things out in the sixth with a beautiful surprise bunt.  Kellie Caplan followed with an equally nice bunt and after Christina Capobianco moved both runners along and then a second ground out, Allie Crump stepped up and blasted a three-run homer to tie the score.  Holly Bourke, now known for home run hitting, promptly did just that in her back-to-back act that proved to be the winning run.


Armed with that first lead of the game, Lela Work was brilliant the last two innings, retiring all six batters.  Devon Bridges made a diving catch in right field to help keep the Aztecs off the bases, coming all the way from the warning track to snare a looping would-be double.  Third baseman Jordan Kreigner also had another beautiful diving catch in the infield.


Glover went 3-4 in the leadoff role for Coach Erin Thorpe.  She is now batting close to .500 and has reached base safely in 37 consecutive games.  Work allowed just six hits in her complete game victory.


Boise State is still seven innings away from doing what they need to do.  The final Mountain West Conference game of the year for the Broncos is tomorrow at 2 p.m. Mountain Time.  It's really simple at this point--the winner of the game will win the Mountain West.  San Diego State, being already in first place, can tie the Broncos with a three-game sweep of UNLV next weekend.  However, they would lose the tiebreaker.  If the Aztecs win tomorrow, they have the luxury of knowing that the only way they could lose the title is if they are swept by UNLV.

Lela worked a brilliant sixth for Boise State.  Armed with a 4-3 lead, she aggressively pitched through the sixth.


She'll have to do it again.  Work will now pitch the seventh.

Bourke Follows With Solo Homer

Two swings of the bat have erased a 3-0 San Diego State and given Coach Erin Thorpe's Broncos a 4-3 lead.  Boise State batting in the top of the sixth.

Crump Ties the Game

Allie Crump just hit a shot over the center field fence with two out to drive in three and tie San Diego State.  Boise State was getting towards the end of its chances with just four outs left.  

San Diego State Grabs Lead

Boise State needed to control the weekend series.  Today, the Broncos are having big trouble stringing hits together and now trail San Diego State 1-0 after four innings.

Broncos Still Scoreless with San Diego State

Tara Glover got another hit, stole her 17th base of the year, and was stranded.  After 2 and a half, Boise State is scoreless against San Diego State.

Scoreless After Two Innings

Tara Glover just made a great running catch to halt San Diego State's business in the second.  Boise State & the Aztecs are scoreless after two.  The Broncos have to win or will be effectively eliminated from the MWC Championship.

Boise State Golf Team Tied for 5th

The Boise State golf team is tied for fifth at the MWC Championships in Tucson, Arizona.  The men are just underway and are now three over, about to play hole #6.  #7 UNLV and #14 San Diego State are tied for first, four under par.  #16 New Mexico is one under while TCU is two over.  Wyoming is tied with Boise State, while Colorado State has fallen a bit and is four over.  Air Force is currently six over par.  


The teams will finish today and then have one more round tomorrow.

Boise State Feasts on San Diego State, 6-1

Two home runs from Devon Bridges, her 12th and 13th of the season, and 13 hits helped propel Boise State to a 6-1 win tonight over San Diego State.


Still, Boise State isn't close to halfway what they need to do this weekend.  Fourteen innings remain in the conference season and the Broncos will have to match their aggressiveness tonight in each of them if they want to wrest the crown away from the Aztecs.  Boise State bunted, they took the extra base, they stole bases, and played exactly how they needed to play if they are to win all three.


The steady Tara Glover was 3-4 tonight with two runs and a run batted in for Coach Erin Thorpe.  Holly Bourke was 2-4 while Jordan Kreiger, whose bat has really come alive lately, was 2-3.  But Bridges got the action going in the first inning with a blast that plated two and set the tone.  Five singles in the second scored two more.


Aubray Zell didn't waver tonight in a complete game victory.  Zell scattered six hits and walked just one.  To put the pressure on San Diego State tomorrow, it will take another dominating performance.


Tomorrow's game will be nationally televised on the Mtn.  How will Boise State react to being seen all over the country?  How will the Aztecs react?  That is a definite unknown.  But it will certainly be a factor.


Seven innings down and 14 to go for the Broncos.  Time to let it loose!

Zell Passes the Test

Aubray Zell has it tonight.  And the Broncos are thankful.  With runners on second and third, no one out, she got a strikeout, a pop to the catcher and another strikeout to end the inning with no damage done.  It remains Boise State 6, San Diego State 1 after 6 and a half.

San Diego State Puts Pressure on the Broncos

Here is where the game is going to be won or lost.  SD State batting in the home half of the sixth, trailing 6-1.  They have runners on second and third after a double and a runner taking second on a slow throw in.  No one out.

Boise State Leads 6-1 Through Five

Boise State has done what it needs to do this weekend through five of at least 21 innings (Shows how far they have to go.)

The Broncos continue to lead San Diego State 6-1 through five complete in San Diego.

Bridges Blasts Another Moon Shot

Devon Bridges has hit another home run in the fifth, and Boise State now leads San Diego State 6-1, the Broncos still batting.  Bridges now has 13 home runs on the season.

Two Innings are in the Books

Two innings are complete out of the minimum of 21 that Boise State must win this weekend, and the Lady Broncos are ahead of San Diego State 5-0.

Bridges Works a Walk

Fearful of another homer, the San Diego State pitcher didn't give Devon anything to hit, and that's fine too, because she has such a great eye that she took the walk and it's now Boise State 5, San Diego State 0.

Caplan Joins Hit Parade

Kellie Caplan's single, the fifth of the inning, has brought in another run in the second.  Boise State still has the bases jammed with one out.

Glover Single Drives in a Run in the Second

Tara is 2-2.  Bourke, Kreiger and Whyte singled and after a strikeout, Tara drove a pitch to right, driving in Holly.  3-0 and there will never be enough runs.

Bridges Launches Initial Blast

Many people in America are awaiting the "supermoon" tomorrow, but actually, it was Devon Bridges' homer that you just saw go off into space.  Bridges' two-run shot drove in Tara Glover, who had singled and stolen second.  The Broncos strike first for two in the first.

The Moment of Truth

Action underway in San Diego and we will know soon if Boise State has a chance at a softball championship or if they will be an also-ran.


The Broncos realistically have to sweep this weekend so one loss and their hopes are pretty much over.  I would hope the team is all-out aggressive, for they don't have anything to lose.

Boise State Golf Team in 6th After One Day

All the shots have been fired and all the balls are in the holes, and Boise State sits 6th after one day at the Mountain West Golf Championships in Tucson, Arizona.

Boise State Golf Team Slips to 7th

If all you've seen are the results, it's a ride down the escalator for the Boise State golf team, which has now fallen to seventh.  The Broncos have slipped to eight under par, just one stroke ahead of last-place Air Force.


There are four teams in the clubhouse--San Diego State at four under, New Mexico at 3 under TCU at 2 under and UNLV at one over.  Colorado State is currently golfing over their heads at one under par with two holes to play.  The Rams are Boise State's partners, while Wyoming (6 over) and Air Force have five holes to play.

Boise State Slips to 6th

The Broncos are now sixth at the MWC Golf Championships.  Boise State is four over with six holes to play today in this, the first of three rounds.  #14 San Diego State is in the clubhouse at four under, #7 UNLV is also done with one over.  #16 New Mexico and #45 TCU are three under and Wyoming is three over.  Colorado State is five over and Air Force has improved to 8 under.

Boise State Still 5th in Mountain West

The Boise State golf team is still in fifth as the Broncos play through holes 9-12.  Boise State is three over so far about to tee off on hole #9 in Tucson.


#14 San Diego State has taken the lead and the Aztecs are just about in the clubhouse with four under par.  #7 UNLV, #16 New Mexico and #45 TCU are tied with even scores with Boise State three over.  Colorado State is four over, Wyoming is five over and Air Force has slipped to 10 over.

Broncos slip to 5th

Boise State is now through six holes and has slipped to fifth at the Mountain West Golf Championships.  The Broncos have not had a great year so anything avoiding last place would be a good finish for the team.


#7 UNLV and #14 San Diego State lead with four under and they are playing the last few holes of the day.  #16 New Mexico is one under while #45 TCU is two over.  Wyoming is tied with Boise State at three over while Colorado State is four over and Air Force is six over.

Boise State Gets Decent Start at Mountain West Golf Championships

Boise State is underway at the 2012 Mountain West Golf Championships.  The Broncos have played three holes and are one over par.  That is tied with #16 New Mexico and Air Force for third place of the moment, but the toughest holes are just ahead.


#7 UNLV leads with 7 under par while #14 San Diego State is three under.

Boise State Golf Team Competes in Mountain West Championship

The Boise State men's golf team has had its share of bad luck this year.  As a golfer myself, I can completely identify--sometimes the ball just doesn't go where you want it to go.  But the team competes in the Mountain West Championship beginning tomorrow, and hopefully the team will peak at the right time.


The tournament gets underway tomorrow morning in Tucson, Arizona.  Teams will play 18 holes each day, Friday through Sunday.

Boise State Coach Greg Patton Named Mountain West Tennis Coach of the Year

Legendary Boise State tennis coach Greg Patton has earned another conference Coach of the Year honor, according to the Mountain West.

Patton helped reinvigorate the Boise State tennis program, leading the #38 Broncos to the regular season Mountain West title and the tournament championship as well.  Patton, in his 16th year as the head man at Boise State, earned his 10th conference coach of the year award.  Patton has won the honor in the Big Sky, the Big West, the Western Athletic Conference and now the Mountain West.

Patton will lead the Broncos into their 15th NCAA Tournament next weekend, as the Broncos take on Florida State in Athens, Georgia, May 12.

Do or Die for the Lady Broncos

The Boise State softball team dug a hole with two losses to Colorado State, then dug deeper with a home loss to New Mexico.  To find their way out, the Lady Broncos have to sweep a weekend series in San Diego against four-time defending NCAA Tournament participant San Diego State.


Boise State, 32-16 on the season and 6-3 in Mountain West Conference play, must win at least two games of the three-game series to keep their conference championship hopes alive.  San Diego State finishes the season with three games at UNLV.  


The first game is set for Friday at 7 p.m. Mountain Time with Saturday and Sunday games scheduled for 2 p.m.  Saturday's game will be televised live on The Mountain, the first Bronco softball game ever to be televised nationally.

Sereke is the MWC Player of the Week

Nathan Sereke of Boise State has been recognized by the Mountain West Conference as the Tennis Player of the Week.


Sereke was 4-0 in singles and doubles at the Mountain West Championships in helping #38 Boise State to the conference title.  He defeated Daniel Sanchez of TCU (6-3, 6-2) as Boise State defeated the Horned Frogs 4-0 and downed Conor Berg of New Mexico, 6-0, 6-4.  Coach Greg Patton's Broncos also defeated New Mexico 4-0.  Sereke and James Meredith won both doubles matches, 8-3 and 8-4.

Klamczynska and Pietzuch Twins Named to All-Mountain West Tennis Team

Sonia Klamczynska, Marlene Pietzuch and Manuela Pietzuch were named to the All-Mountain West women's tennis team.


Klamczynska was 17-13 this season while Marlena and Manuele were honored for their doubles play after going 11-8 this spring.

Five Broncos Named to All-Mountain West Men's Tennis Team

Five Bronco tennis players were honored on the All-Mountain West Team, announced by the league office.


Andy Bettles, Damian Hume and James Meredith were named to the singles team while the duos of Hume & Scott Sears and Meredith & Nathan Sereke were named to the All-conference doubles team.


Meredith has a 16-10 record this spring while Hume is 17-2 and Bettles 20-7.  Sears & Hume are 8-4 in doubles action this year while Sereke & Meredith are 15-7.


Boise State takes on Florida State Saturday, May 12 in the opening round of the NCAA National Tournament.

Boise State sophomore outfielder Tara Glover has been named Mountain West Player of the Week, according to the league office.

Glover went 8-12 (.667) against New Mexico as Boise State won two of three from the Lobos.  Glover had two home runs and two doubles, scored seven runs and drove in three.  Tara also picked up her league-leading 15th stolen base of the year and played an errorless center field.

Boise State takes on conference-leading San Diego State for three games in San Diego this weekend.

Geographically Challenged

Once again, geography skills in the U.S. are questioned.  This time, the NCAA placed Boise State in a sub-Regional tennis tournament in Georgia May 12.  Yeah, Florida State, Boise State's opponent, is close to Georgia.  Boise State?  Not so much.


The NCAA also put the Boise State gymnastics team in the Southern Regional in Fayetteville, Arkansas.  


The confusion could lie in the fact that there is a Boise City, Oklahoma and perhaps the NCAA thinks Boise State is in Oklahoma.  Someone needs to tell the NCAA that Boise, Idaho is in fact where Boise State is, and that that is a different place that Boise City, Oklahoma is--that Boise State is not in the South but in the Northwest.

28-Game Winning Streak Down to Last Out

Boise State has a runner on first but two out in the bottom of the eighth.  Mackenzie Whyte is up for the Broncos, trailing 6-5.

Lobos Strike For Sixth Run

These Lobo women like to go deep--lots of homers in the three-game series.  It seems like they have gotten nearly all of their runs from the long ball.


#1 Florida couldn't hit homers but New Mexico is blasting them right and left.  Go figure.


Pressure now on Boise State to hold them here and come up with a run in the eighth to tie.

Broncos Get Two Leadoff Hits But Do Not Score

Boise State had a lot going on in the seventh, even getting runners on first and third with two out but could not plate a run.  Extra innings we go.

New Mexico Ties it Once Again

A two-out homer by New Mexico in the seventh has tied the game at 5.  Boise State was two strikes from winning and now they will have to come up with more runs, as I predicted in my last post.

Kreiger Has Done It Again for Broncos

Just when it looked like Boise State was going to blow a leadoff walk, Jordan Krieger's bat has breathed new life to the Lady Broncos.


Devon Bridges led off the sixth with a walk but two outs later, Boise State still had a runner at first.  Then, Jorday Krieger lined a 2-2 pitch over the fence and Coach Erin Thorpe's team is up 5-4.  You can bet the pesky Lobos will be battling in the seventh though and the Broncos may still need more runs.

New Mexico Scores Again

New Mexico is trying to be the team that breaks Boise State's home winning streak.  The Lobos have scored again in the sixth, getting runners or second and third with no one out.  A sacrifice fly has given them the lead with still that runner on second and one down.

New Mexico Ties Game in Fifth

The Lobo women have tied it once again, meaning the Broncos need something to keep their conference championship hopes alive.  Boise State has two outs with nothing going in the fifth and the game tied at three.

Projections for Men's Mountain West Track

Two Weeks before the Mountain West Outdoor Track Championships and Blue Through and Through has the only projections you can find on the web.


The Boise State men are right now slotted for fourth.  With some major things breaking their way, they could be in the hunt for the title as they were in the Indoor season.  Boise State is crippled in the running events, where they are projected to score just 44 points to 114 for New Mexico and 111 for TCU.  That's a lot of points to make up.  The Broncos fare very well in field events but the runners are going to have to get it done for Coach Hardy's team to have a shot.  But right now, here are the projected totals:

5.  Colorado State 102

Jordan Kreiger Singles in Go-Ahead Run

It didn't take long for Boise State respond to the New Mexico score.  Allie Crump singled to lead off the Bronco fourth and advanced to second on a grounder.  Then Jordan Kreiger laced a single to score Crump and Boise State is still batting with a 3-2 lead.

BREAKING...Boise State Wins Mountain West

Coach Patton's boys have done it again and Blue Through and Through is the first source in Idaho to break the good news.  Boise State blanked New Mexico 4-0 to win the Mountain West and advance to the NCAA's.

Broncos Continue to Play Well at Mountain West Championship

Meredith playing better tennis this week.  He's up 5-2 in second set after winning first set 6-2.  Bettles needs one more game to win his match; he's up 6-3, 5-2.  Sereke lost one of his breaks but is still up 4-3 in second set after winning first set 6-0.  Pogostkin ran into a tough customer in Sam Iftikhar of New Mexico--he's down 6-4, 3-0.

Boise State needs this one to keep their conference championships hopes alive.  Boise State is up 2-0 in the second over New Mexico.

Three Broncos Win FIrst Sets

This is proving to be more of a struggle then when these two teams met.  Nathan Sereke won his set 6-0, James Meredith won 6-2 and Andy Bettles won 6-3.  Pogostkin just lost his serve and the first set 6-4 and Hume went down 7-5.  The three Broncos who won first sets may need to win to get Boise State the match.


Meredith is also up a break, 3-1, in second set.  Bettles too is now up a break 3-0 in the second set and now Sereke is up 3-1 in his second set.

Boise State Wins Doubles Point at Mountain West Championship

Coach Greg Patton led his team to the doubles point.  Andy Bettles and Filipp Pogostkin really came through at #3 doubles, first getting a break point, then losing it, then breaking again for the win.

Meredith & Sereke Win Doubles Match

Boise State's James Meredith and Nathan Sereke prevailed at #1 doubles 8-4 over their New Mexico opponents at the MWC Tennis Championship.  Each team has won a match and the #3 doubles match will decide the point.  In that match, Andy Bettles and Fillipp Pogostkin have earned a break and are up 7-5.

Hume and Sears Lose at #2 Doubles

New Mexico is playing good tennis right now.  Hume & Sears were shocked and beaten badly.  Meredith & Sereke are leading 6-2 but #3 doubles is tied at five.  The winner takes the MWC Championship and automatic NCAA berth.

Broncos and Lobos This Afternoon

While we all hope the Boise State tennis team can capture the second MWC championship for the school, those in town need to support the emerging Boise State softball team.  The gals have won 28 straight at home and must make it 29 to keep their MWC championship hopes alive.  I believe it can be done but the gals probably can't lose another conference game.  If they do, they leave it up to UNLV to beat SD State and you never want to let someone else do your bidding for you.  After this, it's off to San Diego to settle things once and for all!
