Nathan Sereke Earns Mountain West Tennis Player of the Week

Nathan Sereke became the third Bronco to be honored as the Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced.

Sereke helped Boise State defeat #25 Fresno State and #48 San Diego State last week, earning the Broncos a new ranking of #30.  Sereke defeated Hunter Nicholas of San Diego State 6-3, 6-1 at #4 singles and his victory against Fresno State was the deciding match, a 6-2, 6-2 win over David Ayoun.

Boise State hosts a doubleheader at Appleton Tennis Center this Saturday, with a 10:30 MWC match against Air Force and a 5 p.m. tilt against Weber State.

More Bronco Softball Heroics

Allie Crump's home run in the ninth inning gave Boise State a 7-6 win in Pocatello tonight, the latest in a series of dramatic victories for the Lady Broncos.


Boise State found themselves behind 6-0 after two innings, but rallied for the win behind four long balls.  The Broncos ripped three homers in the third to score five runs and cut the deficit to one.  Christina Capobianco sent a shot over the left-field fence, and Tara Glover and Devon Bridges each clobbered two-run shots in the inning.


Boise State tied the game in the fifth with an unearned run, forcing extra innings and allowing Crump to deliver her shot in the ninth.


Boise State is 26-13 on the season while Idaho State falls to 4-25.  Aubray Zell tossed a complete game for the win, retiring the last 16 batters she faced.


Boise State hosts UNLV in their historic Mountain West Conference opener.  The Rebel girls are in for a three-game set Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Mountain Cove Field.

Bronco Nation Loses Amy Dunn to Cancer

Former Bronco soccer player Amy Dunn has died from cancer.  

Dunn, 29, played defense for Boise State from 2000-2003 and still ranks eighth all-time with 73 games played.  Dunn was giagnosed with Stage IV Melanoma in July 2011 and passed away last Saturday.  The Bronco soccer team held an exhibition fundraiser for Dunn before the 2011 season, raising over $12,000 to help offset some of her medical expenses.


A memorial service for Amy will be Monday, April 9 at the Simplot Ballroom in the Boise State Student Union Building.  Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with the service from 6-7.  Parking is free in the Lincoln Parking Garage.    In lieu of flowers, donations can be made at www.getitdunn.org

Lady Broncos on the Road in Final Tuneup before MWC Season

The Boise State softball team has one more non-conference battle before their initial season in the Mountain West Conference.  The Lady Broncos travel up the road to Idaho State for a 4 p.m. game tomorrow, then kick off their conference season next week.

Boise State Captures All-Idaho Cup Title

The Boise State track and field team captured 11 individual titles in running away with the All-Idaho Cup at NNU today.  The Boise State men scored 259 points while the women earned 210 points.


Idaho State, which is picked to finish seventh in the Big Sky Conference, finished second this weekend with 173.50 points on the men's side and the Bengal women's attempt to score a huge upset over the Boise State women nearly succeeded, with ISU falling short by just four points.  NNU was third in both the men's competition (108 points) and the women's (111 points) while the College of Idaho was fourth with 36.50 and 61 points, respectively.


Although the University of Idaho is of course, in Idaho, the Vandals chose not to come down and compete this weekend.



Chase Sexton won the discus and shot put, heaving the discus a lifetime best 178' 11" and posting a mark of 55' 9.75" in the shot put.  Trevor Kraychir won the hammer throw with a mark of 188'8".  Justin Maines won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.76 while Manoah Wesson took the Cup title in the 400 with a time of 47.73.  Rolando Trammel sprinted in first to take the 100 meters (11.04) while the Bronco 4x100-meter relay team won its event with a time of 41.44.


The Bronco women's 4x100-meter relay team was victorious with a time of 46.99.  Tajanee Simmons won the 100-meter hurdles (15.11) while Debra Johnson won the triple jump with a career-best 40'2" and Shea Hanson captured the 3000-meter steeplechase in 11:17:63.


Boise State will be in Provo, Utah next Saturday for an important clash with BYU and USC.

Boise State Has Defeated #25 Fresno State

Andy Bettles, Fillip Pogostkin, Scott Sears and Nathan Serenke have all won singles matches to lead Boise State to a huge 4-3 upset over #25 Fresno State today in Boise.


Fresno State won the doubles point with a thrilling 9-7 win at #3 doubles.  The action then moved to the singles courts, where Coach Greg Patton's team would have to win four of the six contests.


Bettles prevailed over Jean-Charles Diame 6-1, 6-0 to even the match.  Pogostkin was right behind Bettles with a 6-2, 6-1 win of his own and both turned cheerleaders for their teammates.  Sears dominated his opponent 6-2, 6-1, then Sereke followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory to give the Broncos a much-needed win over a highly-regarded opponent.


The win over rival Fresno State, plus other matches that the Broncos have played this season, such as against #1 USC and Stanford, have set the foundation for a run at an NCAA tournament berth.  There's lots of tennis to be played first, namely getting through the Mountain West Conference season unscathed.  Boise State would like nothing better than to capture the Mountain West in their first season.


But still, you can bet the Broncos are savoring this great victory tonight.  They try to preserve their 22-match home winning streak next Saturday against Air Force and Weber State.

Fresno State came into the day with a #25 national ranking and won the doubles point over Boise State.  But as of now, the Broncos have a 3-1 lead.  Could come down to the wire.

Boise State Tennis Team Takes on #25 Fresno State

Boise State's tennis team takes on its main rival today at the Appleton Tennis Center as #25 Fresno State is in town for a showdown with the Broncos.


Coach Greg Patton's team has shown great improvement since the beginning of the season, but they will have to play their best tennis to knock off the Bulldogs.  Not long ago, it was Boise State that was on top and Fresno was trying to pull the upset but now the shoe is on the other foot.


The match begins at 11 this morning.

Boise State Track Team Gets Five Wins at Idaho Cup

The Boise State women won four events as the Idaho Cup got underway at Jackson's Track in Nampa.  The Bronco men weren't as fortunate, as Edidong Essien was the lone member of the men's squad to win against competition from other Idaho student-athletes.

Mele Vaisima is on a tear.  The Bronco strength star who earned All-America status at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Nampa earlier in the year scored a career best in the hammer with a throw of 183' 0".  Emma Bates captured the 1500-meters in 4:29.18, also a career best, while Andrea Morones popped a career best in the javelin with a throw of 135' 7" and Shannon Jacobs won the long jump with a leap of 17' 4.25". 

Essien won the 200-meters in 22.39, but unfortunately had no company from his teammates on the winner's stand for the Boise State men.

Felix Breaks School Decathlon Record, Finishes 4th at Texas Relays

Kurt Felix of Boise State broke the school decathlon record by 209 points to finish fourth in the Texas Relays yesterday.  Felix broke his own personal best by 509 points in totaling 7,921 in the two-day event in Austin and now owns the fifth-best mark in the world this season.  Alexi Morton tied for 19th in the women's heptathlon with 4,805 points. Felix won two events among all decathletes in the prestigious meet and set personal bests in six of the 10 events.  The Boise State senior led on opening day, as he usually does, but fell back because his second day doesn't include his best events.   Felix finished eighth in the 110-meter hurdles yesterday to begin the competition with a career-best 14.78 seconds.  Kurt finished eighth in the discus with a career-best throw of 127' 4".  He then cleared 13' 9.25" in the pole vault, something he did not do in the recent NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.  He then moved on to one of his best events, the javelin, where Kurt won the competition with a career-best of 229' 3".  Felix completed the day with a career-best of 4:45.22 in the 1,600 meters to finish ninth in that event. I know that Boise State's hitters are every bit as good as Oregon's, but they haven't shown it in Eugene.

Felix Leads Decathlon at Texas Relays

Kurt Felix of Boise State leads after one day of the decathlon at the Texas Relays in Austin.  


Felix has 4,194 points, two points ahead of hometown favorite Isaac Murphy of Texas.  Duke's Curtis Beach, the runner-up last year at the NCAA Championships, has 3,911 points.


Felix also led the heptathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships, but a no-height in the pole vault sent him near the bottom of the field.

Boise State has now scored six runs in the fifth inning and lose to Oregon 14-6.

Time for the Lady Broncos to Step Up

With a 25-10 record, 11 straight victories and 23 home victories, plus giving then-#1 Florida a battle to the finish, the Boise State softball team has proven itself to be a team on the rise.


But despite their accomplishments in a short period of time, Boise State still has never received a vote in the Top 25 in college softball.  Now is the time.  


Boise State plays #16 Oregon in three games at Eugene.  The Broncos certainly aren't supposed to win all three nor even two of them.  But if Boise State wants respect, they need to win at least one of the three games and be competitive in the other two.  The two teams play a doubleheader today with games at 4 and 6 p.m. Mountain Time.

Boise State Wins It

Portland State advanced their runner to third on a sacrifice bunt.  With one out, a fly ball was sent to right fielder Devon Bridges.  Bridges snared it, then through the runner out at the plate and the game is over.


Bridges hit a two-run homer and threw out the tying run in the bottom of the eighth.  


Boise State is now 25-10 and now has a great opportunity.  If they can win a game or two against #16 Oregon, gotta' believe the Broncos deserve to be ranked.

Boise State's softball team travels to Oregon this week for five games, beginning with a doubleheader this afternoon against Portland State.  The Lady Broncos have won nine straight, eight of those at home.  Games are set for 2 and 4 p.m., Mountain Time.


Boise State then will be tested by the #16 Oregon Ducks in three games scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.  Boise State has never beaten a ranked team.

Boise State Gymnasts Will Go to Fayetteville

Just announced--Boise State will participate at the 2012 NCAA Regional Gymnastics Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.


The NCAA no doubt did this to intimidate the team. Arkansas was the team that the judges gave tremendous scores to last year while giving subdued praise to Boise State in last year's Regional, thus keeping the Broncos from reaching Nationals by .025 of a point.  Florida was #1 in the nation last year at Boise State's Regional and ended up being the team that beat out the Broncos by that .025 of a point.  And Arkansas? Well, they are the host team.

Lady Broncos Lead Weber State 7-0

Boise State decided not to leave this game up to one swing of the bat, and is leading Weber State 7-0 after six innings.  The Broncos are going for their 23rd straight home win.

Boise State Speech & Debate Team Wins PKD National Tournament

The Boise State Talkin' Broncos captured the championship at the 2011-2012 Pi Kappa Delta National Comprehensive Tournament in Overland Park, Kansas.

The National Comprehensive Tournament is a biennial competition that runs in the off-year of the biennial PKD National Championship Tournament. The Talkin’ Broncos beat out 69 other schools to take this year’s tournament championship in debate.

Sophomore Dalton Hellman was the tournament champion in open division public debate while juniors Taylor Bruun and Jon Agnew finished second in the nation in open division parliamentary debate and received the third and eighth place speaker awards, respectively.

“We have a unique situation with our program; we compete in multiple formats of debate at Boise State – something that many other programs don’t do,” said Manda Hicks, director of forensics. “When we get out of the region and have a chance to show off our versatility, it’s difficult for other teams to keep up. Boise State had six of the 16 octo-finalists in open public debate, and six of the 10 top speaker awards. We also had finalists in parliamentary debate and junior and novice divisions. Basically, out of 70 schools, we accounted for about 30 percent of the finalists in debate.”

Josh Watkins won first-place as the top speaker, was a semi-finalist in open division public debate and was recognized as the ninth best competitor in the nation with a pentathlon award. Senior Norell Conroy and junior Sabonn Dammarell reached the quarterfinals and Conroy was named as the ninth-place speaker. Robin Jensen was a quarter-finalist in open division public debate and finished as the fourth top speaker.

Lauren Bramwell finish as an octo-finalist in open public debate and garnered the second-place top speaker award. Cassandra Sullivan and Monica Cutler were octo-finalists, taking fourth and seventh-place top speaker awards. KayCee Babb and Skyler Bagler were octo-finalists in novice public debate, with Bagley earning a fifth-place top speaker award.

Watkins led Boise State with sixth-place finishes in communication analysis and after-dinner speaking, was a semifinalist in program oral interpretation and reached the quarterfinals in informative speaking.

Sullivan placed fourth in impromptu speaking and was a quarterfinalist in informative speaking, Jensen was a semifinalist in informative speaking, Tanya Medukha reached the quarterfinals in program oral interpretation while Bramwell was a quarterfinalist in poetry interpretation. Cuter reached the quarters in prose and the team of Cutler and Bramwell were quarterfinalists in duo interpretation.

Hellman, Sullivan,Agnew and Bruun won awards in extemporaneous speaking, Jensen, Bruun and Conroy took honors in improomptu speaking and Sylvia Forter was honored for her interpretation of poetry.

Individual members will compete at the National Parliamentary Debate Tournament, the International Worlds Debate Tournament and the National Individual Events Tournament.

NCAA Regionals Announced Next Week

Boise State will find out its seed and which of the nation's six Regionals the Broncos will compete in for the 2012 NCAA Regional Gymnastics Championships next week, most likely Monday. There are Regionals in both Salt Lake City and Seattle, although the Broncos could be sent elsewhere.  It appears Boise State will finish the regular season ranked either 14th or 15th.

Lady Broncos Win 22nd Straight Home Game, 2-1 Over Weber State

This one was a thriller.  After 5 1/2 scoreless innings, the fireworks ignited for both teams.  Devon Bridges hit a two-run solo homer in the bottom of the sixth and Allie Crump followed with a homer of her own to put Boise State up 2-0.  Crump's blow would prove vital.


Janel Cunningham came up and blasted a homer in the top of the seventh to cut the Bronco lead to one.  But Aubray Zell settled down and got two ground outs to win the game, Boise State's 22nd straight victory at Mountain Cove Field.


The two teams meet tomorrow afternoon at 2.

Boise State has allowed a leadoff home run to open the seventh. Three of the last four batters (two for Boise State and now one for Weber) have left the yard.  The Broncos now cling to a 2-1 lead.

Crump Follows With Solo Shot

Allie Crump followed Devon Bridges' home run with a solo shot of her own.  Both were to center field at Mountain Cove, and Boise State leads 2-0.

The Wildcat pitcher has allowed just one hit in two innings.  Boise State had something going in the first with runners on second and third and only one out but could not capitalize.  It is 0-0 after two.

Bronco Women Defeat New Mexico 6-1

The Boise State women's tennis team went to Albuquerque and conquered the Lobos 6-1 today.


Boise State won the doubles point, Morgan Basil won her match 6-1, 6-4 and then Sonia Klamcczynska won 6-3, 6-2 at #1 singles.  After New Mexico's Michaela Oldani won her team's only match, 7-5, 6-4 over Boise State's Kaitlyn Brown, Sandi Vo clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Kristin Eggleston, the Lady Broncos' first victory in its new conference.


Marlena Pietzuch followed with a straight sets win over Susanna Kouttila (6-2, 6-4) and Manuela Pietzuch also won her match.

Lady Broncos Go Up on New Mexico 3-1

After being in a slump for the last month or two, the Boise State women's tennis team picked a good time to rebound, their debut in the Mountain West Conference.


Boise State won the doubles point, Morgan Basil won her match 6-1, 6-4 and now Sonia Klamcczynska has won 6-3, 6-2 at #1 singles.  The Broncos are up 3-1 and trying to go 1-0 in conference action.

The Broncos have won their 19th consecutive home match over UAB, 6-1.

Boise State Sweeps Doubles Point

Boise State won all three doubles matches and now leads #73 UAB 1-0 in the championship game of the Boise State Spring Break Classic.

Boise State Tennis Team Wins 18th Straight Home Match

Now fully healthy, the Boise State tennis team downed Ball State 5-1, then topped Southern Mississippi 6-1 to reach the championship match of the 2012 Boise State Spring Break Classic at Appleton Tennis Center in Boise.  The Broncos are 12-0 at home this season and have won 18 consecutive matches going back to last season.

James Meredith was the first Bronco to leave the court with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Dalton Albertin of Ball State.  Damian Hume, Andy Bettles, Filipp Pogostkin and Garrett Patton all won as well.  No doubles point was played due to a rain delay.

Coach Greg Patton's team swept the doubles point as Hume and Scott Sears combined for an 8-0 win, Bettles and Pogostkin were victorious 8-1 and Meredith and Erik Sheldon prevailed 8-5.

Hume and Bettles then went to the singles courts and both emerged with 6-0, 6-0 wins.  Hume is now 10-0 since returning to the Bronco lineup.  Meredith then downed Paulo Alverado 6-1, 6-1 to give Boise State the win, and Pogostkin and Sears provided the final margin.

Boise State faces #73 UAB in the championship this afternoon at 1:30 at Appleton.

BYU Finishes with 194.300 Tonight

The Broncos have 196.2 and will win, but will be short of the mark they needed.  Looking at the team beam score, had they hit 49 in the event, like their coach wants them to do in each rotation, Boise State would have had, yes, a 197.100 and would have vaulted into #12 in the nation.

Potvin-Green Rolls Up a 9.950 on Floor

Star Boise State gymnast Brittany Potvin-Green scored a sensational 9.950 on floor tonight to wrap up the evening with an all-around score of 39.60.  


Potvin-Green's all-around ranks #2 in the history of Boise State gymnastics and just .025 behind Lindsay Ward's school record of 39.625 set on February 29, 2004.  Superb performance by the amazing Brittany Potvin-Green!!!

Boise State Collapses on Beam

The Broncos roared through the first two rotations with scores well over 49, then slumped to a miserable 48.45 on beam.  Boise State now needs all perfect 10's on floor to reach 197.100.

Boise State's Two Stars Carrying Them

Amy Glass and Brittany Potvin-Green are keeping the Broncos above 49 right now in each rotation.  Both have scores of 9.925 and 9.900 in the first two events.  However, two sub-9.8's by teammates on the beam have the Broncos in danger of falling below the score they need.

Things got a little interesting in the seventh, thanks to a wild pitch, two errors and timely hitting by the visitors.  Boise State finally put out the fire and the Broncos won 5-3.

Boise State Records a 49.275 on Vault

Boise State scored a 49.275 in the first rotation on vault tonight in their gymnastics meet with BYU at Taco Bell Arena in Boise.  That is almost exactly what they need in each of the four rotations to get 197.1, the score they need to move into the Top 12.


BYU received 48.825 in their tougher rotation on bars and is right there in their competition with Boise State.

The Score to Watch for the Boise State Gymnasts

Boise State needs a score of at least 197.100 tonight against BYU to reach the Top 12 in the nation.  That is significant because, in the judges minds at Regionals, they will deserve to move on to Nationals.  As the Broncos found out last year, extremely tough to qualify for Nationals if you are not already in the Top 12.

Boise State Extends Lead to 5-0

The Lady Bronco softball team now leads UTSA 5-0, thanks to a Devon Bridges solo shot.  Boise State is bidding for its 21st consecutive home win, third best in the nation.  Boise State leads UTSA 5-0 after five.

Nebeker Named Gatorade Player of the Year

Incoming Boise State Bronco Joey Nebeker was named  Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year after averaging 22.8 points, 9.9 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shorts for Melba High School.  Nebeker, 6-7, 200, led the Mustangs to the Idaho 2A championship.

Bronco Men's Tennis Team Leads Ball State 3-1

Play has resumed in the Boise State Spring Break Tennis Classic on the Appleton courts.  The Broncos lead Ball State 3-1.

Boise State-BYU Tonight

Don't forget Senior Night for the Boise State gymnasts, who need a score of at least 197.1 to move into the Top 12 in the nation.  The Broncos host BYU in Taco Bell Arena tonight at 7!

Pro Day

One NFL scout said today that the group that he saw today at Boise State was the best he's seen in 13 years of scouting.

Lady Broncos Sweep Seattle

Boise State exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning and the Broncos went on to defeat Seattle 8-3 for a doubleheader sweep at Mountain Cove Field in Boise.


Devon Bridges and Allie Crump led off Boise State's big inning with singles and Coach Erin Thorpe's team plated its first run on a fielder's choice by Kellie Caplan.  Mackenzie White singled and Jordan Krieger reached on an error.  Ashley Collier singled in two runs and Tara Glover's double to center drove in two more.  Caplan's fly out sent Glover to third.  Christina Capobianco was hit by a pitch and Bridges, the 10th Bronco up in the inning, reached on an error that scored Glover.  Crump singled in the final two runs of the inning.


Crump pitched four innings while Lela worked allowed two hits over three innings as Boise State prevailed.  The Broncos play UTSA tomorrow at Mountain Cove.

Boise State Defeats Seattle 9-0 in Five Innings

Boise State played up to the level it is capable of with an early 9-0 disposing of Seattle in the first game of a doubleheader at Mountain Cove Field.  


Holly Bourke was 2-2 with five RBI's to lead the Bronco hitting attack with a single and a three-run homer.  Aubray Zell and Kenzie Cole combined for the shutout.  The two teams will meet in the second game.

Kellen Moore Was 52-53 on Pro Day

Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore completed 52-of-53 in the passing drills before professional scouts at Boise State's Pro Day in Boise.  His only incompletion was a deep pass to wide receiver Tyler Shoemaker that he missed by about an inch.
