Kurt Felix Finishes 12th in Heptathlon 60-Meters

An historic day in the Treasure Valley as Boise State and Jackson's Track hosts their first NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.  Bronco Stadium has hosted the NCAA Outdoor National Championships previously.  Kurt Felix of Boise State is 12th after one event in the heptathlon.  He ran the 60 in 7.17, 13/100th's of a second slower than his time at the MWC Championships.

Boise State Women Play New Mexico in Mountain West Semifinal

By virtue of their 68-63 win over Colorado State Wednesday, the Boise State women's basketball team takes on New Mexico in the semifinals of the 2012 Mountain West Basketball Championships Friday in Las Vegas, Nevada.  New Mexico knocked off #2 seed UNLV 61-58.


Boise State swept the season series with New Mexico, downing the Lobo women 65-48 in Boise and then holding off a late rally to win 68-64 in New Mexico.  In the first game, Lauren Lenhardt led the Lady Broncos with 23 points and six rebounds while Kati Isham had 12 points.  Porche Torrance had 17 points and 12 rebounds for New Mexico.  In the second game between these two, it was a decidedly different game, when Boise State pulled out to a 63-48 lead with 4:17 left.  But the home team came storming back to make it interesting down the stretch.  Nicole Brady earned high-point honors for Boise State with a season-high 19 points and eight rebounds.  Lenhardt had 16 and Isham 13.  Caroline Durbin poured in 27 points for New Mexico  while Torrance contributed 17 points and 15 boards.


Boise State is an even .500 on the season at 15-15 while New Mexico enters the semifinals with a 10-19 record.  The Broncos lead the Mountain West with 68.2 points a game while the Lobos are averaging 54.8.  Defense is where New Mexico has the upper hand, allowing just 56.8 points while Boise State allows 67 a game.


Tipoff is set for 3:30 Friday afternoon Mountain Time.

Jamaal Franklin's Three-Pointer Sinks Broncos

Jamaal Franklin hit an off-balance three-point shot with one second left as San Diego State beat the Broncos 65-62.  In our article, we said that Boise State had to stop Franklin & Tapley to win.  Well, Tapley had 20 points and Franklin 19.

Essentially three Broncos have taken the team on their backs and led Boise State through the first half.  Kenny Buckner and Drew Wiley have eight points each and Derrick Marks has seven.  Amazingly, Boise State has a 17-10 rebounding advantage and to this point have not allowed an offensive rebound by San Diego State.

Franklin Leads San Diego State Comeback

Jamaal Franklin has gotten going, something Boise State wanted to prevent.  His dunk on a fast break has brought the Aztecs to within one at 28-27 with 1:45 left in the half.

The Aztecs have awakened.  San Diego State is up to 46.7% from the field and three-point shooting (4-6) and a rebounding advantage of 12 to 6 are keeping Boise State in the lead.  Broncos 26, Aztecs 22 with just over five minutes left.

Burnett & Courtney Compete at NCAA Zone E Diving Championships Thursday

Amanda Burnett and Ciera Courtney will represent Boise State at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships this Thursday through Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colorado.


Burnett and Courtney will compete on the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform events.  Seven divers will advance out of Colorado Springs to the NCAA Championships, where four Broncos (Stephanie North, Amber Boucher, Sydney Johansen and Stevie Hugher) have already qualifed.

Women's Mountain West Basketball Tournament Scores

In an upset, Wyoming sent TCU out of the Mountain West with a 61-44 victory and in the other final so far, San Diego State beat Air Force 68-58.


New Mexico and UNLV open up the night session in Las Vegas, while Boise State meets Colorado State at 7:30 Mountain Time.

Broncos Hope to Get Hot at Tourney Time

Boise State has played well in both games this season against San Diego State. If they are to win their quarterfinal matchup against the Aztecs in the Mountain West Tournament Wednesday afternoon, the Broncos must make someone other than Jamaal Franklin or Chase Tapley beat them.

That duo ranks #1 and #4 in the Mountain West Conference, respectively, in scoring. Franklin is hitting 17.1 points a game and averaging 8.0 rebounds (4th in the MWC). He has 30 steals, 19 blocked shots and has also hit 41 three-points this season. Franklin brings the complete package--he also is averaging 80.3% from the line and he gets there often (139-173). Tapley is averaging 15.2 points and 4.3 rebounds a game. He also has 53 steals and 15 blocks and is San Diego State's best three-point shooter at 42.1% (64-152).

San Diego State comes into the game with a 24-6 record, 10-4 in conference. In 25 of those 30 games, Franklin (14) and Tapley (11) have led the team in scoring.

This was supposed to be a year in which the Aztecs had a bit of a drop-off; they lost four key players from their sensational 34-3 team from last year. If you call six losses a drop-off, I can provide you with the names of several hundred coaches who would take that.

The amazing thing is that the Aztecs still are a deep team, with seven athletic players who play significant minutes. This is because San Diego State Coach Steve Fisher has three transfers who have caught on--Xavier Thames from Washington State (10.5 ppg, 118 assists, fourth in the MWC), James Rahon from Santa Clara (9.1 ppg) and Garrett Green from LSU (6.1 points, 4.7 rebounds per game) .

DeShawn Stephens (5.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game) and Tim Shelton (5.4 points, 4.9 rebounds) also play key roles for this team that almost assuredly will go to the NCAA Tournament no matter what happens this week. SD State has defeated three teams from the Pac-12 (USC, Arizona and Cal) and four of the six losses (UNLV, New Mexico, Colorado State and Air Force) have come to Mountain West teams. The only non-conference losses were to Baylor and Creighton.

You look at the season records and figure this matchup is a blowout. But when you break it down, you see why Boise State has hung tough. In nearly every statistic--scoring offense, turnovers, rebounding, assists, etc., these two teams are nearly even. San Diego State averages 71.6 points a game to 68.6 for Boise State. San Diego State is a +5.1 in rebounding while the Broncos are +2.6. Turnovers are essentially even.

San Diego State has a slight edge in field goal percentage (45.7 to 42.8%) and they are only slightly better at the free-throw line (70% to 68.8%).

Where San Diego State has won both games this season, pure and simple, is defense. This is the single biggest difference between these two teams. The Aztecs allow 62.9 points to 66.3 for Boise State and even a more telling statistic is this one: SD State allows opponents to shoot just 39.8% while the Broncos allow 45.3%. This isn't good if you're last in the MWC in shooting, as Boise State is, or if you're near the top of the conference in shooting, as San Diego State is.

Keep an eye on the Boise State defense Thursday--they'll need to contest every shot and not allow any easy baskets to win. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. in Las Vegas.

Anthony Drmic, Derrick Marks Named Honorable Mention All-Mountain West

Boise State freshmen Anthony Drmic and Derrick Marks were named honorable mention All-Mountain West Conference, according to the league office.  

Drmic, a 6-6 guard/forward who has started 28 games for Coach Leon Rice's Broncos, set a school record for three-pointers by a freshman (54), passing Coby Karl's record of 49.  Drmic is the highest-scoring freshman in 18 years, ranking fourth on the freshman single-season list.  Anthony is the only freshman ranked in the Top 20 in the Mountain West in scoring at 11.8 points a game, third all-time for Bronco freshman.  He also leads all conference freshmen in rebounding with 4.9 per game.

Marks, a 6-3, 206-pound guard, has pleased in all 29 games, starting the last 12.  Marks is eighth in scoring by a freshman at Boise State with 272 points.  His court-to-court runner with less than a second left led Boise State to a recent victory over Colorado State.  Marks leads the team in scoring in the conference with 9.6 per game and his 60 assists ranks third all-time for a Boise State freshman.

Lenhardt Named Second Team All-Mountain West

Lauren Lenhardt of Boise State has been named to the All-Mountain West Conference Second Team in a vote by league basketball coaches.  

Lenhardt, a 6-2 junior forward/center, has averaged 13.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game this season in Boise State's first year in the conference.  She is shooting 50%, 44th in the nation from the floor and 42.9% on three-point tries.


Senior Kati Isham was listed as honorable mention after a regular season campaign in which she has averaged 14.5 points, 3 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.  Kati may have a bit of extra motivation come tournament time.

Boise State Tennis Team Beats Montana 6-1

The Lady Broncos finally get out of the losing column.

Boise State Edges Wichita State 5-4

The Broncos finished 4-1 at the DeMarini Tournament in Tempe, Arizona with an impressive victory over Wichita State.  Boise State is now 13-7 on the season.

Lady Broncos Take Two

Lela Work earned her first win and her first save yesterday as Boise State downed Creighton 6-3 and then defeated North Dakota State 7-4.


Work was brilliant, allowing just one hit and striking out 10 in six innings against Creighton in the opening game.  After a leadoff single to open the game, Work was perfect, not allowing a base runner.  Lela left the game after the fifth inning, only to return when Creighton scored three runs in the seventh.  She then proceeded to retire the final three batters she faced.  Devon Bridges homered for the first time this season in the third inning and Allie Crump followed with a solo shot of her own as Boise State opened a 6-0 lead.  


Aubray Zell then won again in the nightcap, pitching a solid five innings and striking out eight.  Work came in for the final two innings to earn the save.  


Spark plug Tara Glover led off the first inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch.  Glover has already set the school record for triples in a year with three and she has now hit safely in 18 of 19 games.  The Bison came back in the third on an error, a sacrifice bunt, a groundout, and a two-out single that tied the game.


Coach Erin Thorpe's Broncos took charge in their next opportunity as Holly Bourke led off the fourth with a double.  An out and a walk later, Crump doubled her in.  Megan Harvey then laced a pinch-hit RBI single and Glover followed with a sacrifice fly to give Boise State a 4-1 lead.


The Bison came storming back in the fifth with two runs and had the tying run on third base with one out.  On a ground ball to shortstop Mackenzie Whyte, Whyte noticed that the runner was off the bag and alertly threw to third.  The runner was tagged out and the threat ended.  Knowing they would need more runs, Bridges again delivered for the Broncos with a leadoff homer to put her team up 5-3.  


Sure enough, North Dakota State came back to cut the margin to one again, then Glover, Kellie Caplan hit back-to-back singles in the sixth.  Christina Capobianco's sacrifice fly scored one and Bridges came through again with an RBI single to put Boise State ahead 7-4.


Boise State plays Wichita State Sunday morning to wrap up the weekend.

Light Schedule Today

The Lady Broncos, 3-1 so far this weekend, wrap up the DeMarini Softball Tournament in Tempe, Arizona with a clash this morning against Wichita State.  We'll try to get you a score as soon as possible.

Kraychir Wins Weight Throw at UW Last Chance Qualifier

Boise State strongman Trevor Kraychir bested the competition to win the weight throw today at the University of Washington Last Chance Qualifier Track Meet.


Kraychir, the champion in the Mountain West, was trying to qualify for next week's NCAA Indoor Championships in Nampa, Idaho.  He won the event with a throw of 66' 2.25", but was a little over four feet shy of automatic qualifying.

Schedule for Today

The Boise State men's basketball team closes the regular season at Mountain West power New Mexico; the Lobos have been playing well, beating both UNLV and San Diego State recently.  That game is set for 2 in Albuquerque.


Don't forget the women's tennis team hosts Utah, the team added to the Pac-12 instead of Boise State.  The match is slated for the Appleton Tennis Center at noon.  Still time to get down there and cheer on the Lady Broncos.


The track team is in Seattle for the UW Final Qualifier meet to try to secure times to compete at the first NCAA Indoor Championships held in the Boise State later this month.


The women's softball team has games against Creighton (1 p.m.) and North Dakota State (3:30) in Tempe, Arizona.

Bronco Women Netters Host #33 Utah and Montana

The weather is surprisingly nice for this time of year and the Boise State women's tennis team will take advantage of it, moving their matches against #33 Utah and Montana from indoors to the beautiful Appleton Tennis Center outdoors.

Boise State and Utah will take to the courts at noon Saturday while the Bronco-Grizzly match begins at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Potvin-Green Brings the Broncos Home

Brittany scored an excellent 9.925 on floor, ensuring the team's score above 196 at 196.125.  Had it not been for her and Ciera Perkins, the team would not have made it.  


The score won't be good enough to move Boise State up in the rankings, as both #13 Ohio State and #14 Auburn scored much better than the Broncos.

Ciera Perkins scored a brilliant 9.875 on floor for Boise State tonight.  She is the only Bronco so far to have three scores of 9.8 or better, showing her teammates what has to be done for Boise State to jump to the next level.  If Ciera had a beam score tonight, she'd have a great all-around score.  Since the Broncos did not score well on the beam, Perkins may want to add that event to her repertoire.

Stanford, #12 in women's gymnastics, has a home meet Sunday against Arizona and California.

#13 Missouri, a team Boise State is trying to catch in the national gymnastics rankings, is in Denver for a Quad-Meet tomorrow.

#14 Ohio State Scores 196.925 Tonight

#14 Ohio State, the team ranked two spots ahead of Boise State in the national gymnastics rankings, performed like a team that wants to make Nationals--the Buckeyes scored 196.925 tonight in beating Kent State.

#15 Auburn Scores a 196.7 Tonight in Beating Southern Utah

The team right in front of Boise State in the national gymnastics rankings, Auburn, scored a 196.7 tonight.  The Broncos need to pass at least four teams to have a chance to make Nationals.  Doesn't look like Boise State will do it tonight.

ASU Takes 1-0 Lead

Arizona State struck first, scoring a run in the top of the fourth.  The Sun Devils lead Boise State 1-0 with the Broncos batting.

Disaster Strikes Broncos on Beam

Not only did Boise State have sub-9.8's on beam, but a 9.1, a 9.675, a 9.725 and a 9.750.  This means a 48.750 team score.  The Broncos still above a 196 pace but just barely.  They have 147.025 after three rotations.  Utah State with a 147.625.

Broncos Do Well on Vault

Aside from the initial 9.750, the rest of the Boise State gymnasts scored well and the team did better on bars than on vault.  Lindsay Kazandjian scored a 9.825, followed by Caitlin Mann with a 9.875, Kelsey Black with a 9.80, Ciera Perkins scored a 9.850 and Brittany Potvin-Green an even 9.8.

The Aggies are not doing well on vault with five competitors under 9.7.  That's not very typical of them.  Their Regional Qualifying Score is going to take a hit.


USU rang up a team score of 47.925 on vault.  I was hoping they could push the Broncos to make them better but that's not going to happen.

Black gets the Broncos started on the bars in the second rotation.  Utah State struggling a bit on vault.  But Boise State should have one thing on their minds and that is 9.8 individual scores and 196 team scores.

Last Four Broncos Steady on Vault

Amanda Otuafi, Ciera Perkins and Brittany Potvin-Green have come through for Boise State with scores of 9.85, 9.825 and 9.90, respectively and Kelsey Morris finished with a 9.8.  No Amy Glass again for the Broncos.  Unfortunately, the Broncos are going to have to count one of those sub-9.8 scores.  They get a 49.125--we'll see if that will be enough to score 196.


Utah State doing fairly well with 38.925 on the bars with one competitor left.  If Boise State slips too much more, the Aggies are going to be right there to take advantage.


UPDATE:  Utah State scored 48.825, very respectable.

We're also watching Boise State & ASU in softball.  Broncos won their first game of the weekend 16-1 over Howard and hopefully they can continue to hit despite the tougher pitching.

Broncos Already with Sub 9.8's

The young Broncos continue to struggle as Kelsey Black (9.750) and Caitlin Mann (9.5) have completed their vault routines.  The Broncos have just a few weeks to tighten things down and move up in the rankings before the postseason.  And, as we found out last year, if you're not in the Top 12 by Regionals, you aren't going to be given the scores you need to qualify for Nationals.  That's not the way the system works.

Boise State Beats Howard 16-1

The Bronco softball team opened the weekend in Tempe, Arizona in a big way, defeating Howard 16-1.


Kenzie Cole pitched a complete-game three-hitter as Boise State opened the ASU Tournament.  Christina Capobianco clobbered two home runs and drove in three in a 2-3 performance to lead the Bronco hitters.  Holly Bourke hit a grand slam and Ashley Collier also homered.  Jordan Krieger went  2-3 for the Broncos.


Boise State, 10-6 on the season, faces Arizona State tonight at 7.

Boise State Rebounds for 6-1 Win Over Utah State

Boise State had a tough time at the Blue-Gray Tennis Classic, but they bounced back for a 6-1 on the road over Utah State today in Logan.


Sophomore Nathan Sereke once again led the way with a straight set win over Fredrik Peterson to move his season record to 9-0.  Filipp Pogostkin whitewashed his opponent, 6-0, 6-0.  Damian Hume (#59 in the nation), James Meredith (#60) and Andy Bettles also won their singles matches.  


The Broncos stay in Utah for a match against BYU Friday.

Four Bronco Swimmers Have a Chance to Do Themselves and Their School Proud

The ever-improving Boise State swimming team, which won the 2012 Mountain West Conference Championship in dramatic fashion Saturday, is sending four Broncos to the NCAA National Championships.

Seniors Amber Boucher and Stephanie North, junior Stevie Hughey and freshman Sydney Johansen will represent Boise State at the Championships, set for March 15-17 in Auburn, Alabama.  The quartet were timed in 1:29.73 in a time trial at the Mountain West Championships to rank 14th in the nation.  Boise State has provisional qualifying times in all five relay events, allowing them to assemble relay squads out of the four individuals.  The Broncos are ranked 17th in the 400-yard freestyle relay and 19th in the 400-yard medley relay.  Boise State is eligible to enter four relays, although with only four swimmers, they are somewhat limited in how many events they can enter.


Boucher is ranked 11th in the 100-yard butterfly, 15th in the 100-yard freestyle and 17th nationally in the 50-yard freestyle and was invited in all three events.  North is ranked 10th in the 100 freestyle and 19th in the 50 freestyle--she is also expected to swim the 200-yard freestyle.  Hughey is eligible to swim in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly while Johansen can swim in the 100 breaststroke, the 200 backstroke and 200-yard individual medley.


Coach Kristin Hill's Broncos finished #39 at last year's NCAA's and given the fact that four members will be at Nationals, they could significantly improve on that finish.  Boucher was 12th last year in the 100-yard butterfly to earn honorable mention All-America and score the first points ever for Boise State at the NCAA Nationals.


Divers Amanda Burnett and Ciera Cortney, who played a significant role in the Broncos' championship last weekend, can qualify for Nationals at the 2012 Zone E Diving Championships March 8-10 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Boise State will face Howard and Arizona State tomorrow in Tempe, Arizona, and will take on Creighton and North Dakota State Saturday.
