Boise State's Felix Tops Hobson of UCLA for High Jump Title
Lady Bronco Gymnasts Return to Form
#16 Boise State bounced back from a disappointing effort last week for a win on the road over tough BYU 195.750 to 194.750.
Boise State started out with a solid 48.875 on bars and impressed the judges with a 49.450 on vault, the second-best team total in school history. After a lower than expected 48.175 on floor, the Lady Broncos ended the day with a 49.250 on beam to clinch the victory. Even more important, the beam was the apparatus that prevented Boise State from winning last weekend and they came back with a score that is the seventh-best in school history in that event.
As co-head coach Neil Resnick said after the meet, the Broncos "have now scored 49 on every event this season." "We look forward to next week and the opportunity to do it all in one meet." That's really the only thing keeping Boise State from being one of the Top 10 teams in the country.
Senior Amy Glass won titles on the beam, floor and the all-around. It's good to have her back and performing at that level. Glass rang up a 9.90 on beam to earn her 11th career win, #3 all-time at Boise State for beam wins. Glass achieved a 9.850 on floor to win that event and her 39.450 overall score was the 15th-best ever at Boise State. Glass has now won 15 all-around titles, #2 in school history. Glass also scored 9.90 on vault to tie for second and finished tied for fourth on bars with an excellent 9.80.

BYU's Natalie Eyre-Pickard won the bars title with a 9.875 score, while Krysten Koval tied with Glass for the beam title. BYU's Raquel Willman placed second in the all-around (39.20), while Boise State's Potvin-Green placed third 38.725.
The Broncos continue on the road next week, traveling to Chicago, Illinois for the Chicago Style Invite next Friday, February 10. The Broncos know they can compete with the best in the nation. It's important for them to win so they know they can beat the best in the nation. Besides Boise State, the other top teams will be #7 UCLA, #17 Missouri and #19 Illinois.

Broncos Able to Close to 32-25 on New Mexico
It's halftime at Taco Bell Arena. Boise State was in danger of losing touch with New Mexico but they were able to cut the lead to 32-25 at halftime. Remember it is just days since Boise State held a 10-point lead on the road against a much better team, #17 San Diego State.

Boise State's basketball team can stay with the top teams in the nation, just not the others. Playing at home, the Broncos are down 10-4 to New Mexico.

Boise State Milers Take Top Four Places At Bronco Classic
Boise State long-distance men captured the first four places in the mile and five of the top eight. That's impressive enough, but when you have UCLA in the field, doubly so. Drew O'Donoghue McDonald missed by a bit over ten seconds of running a sub-four minute mile with a time of 4:10.27.

Boise State Tennis Team Hosts #26 Washington
Bronco tennis fans will have a chance to see one of the nation's top teams when #26 Washington visits Boise today.
The Huskies are 4-1 with their lone loss to #10 Duke. Washington is led by junior Kyle McMorrow, who is #15 in the nation in singles.
The match gets underway at 5:30 p.m. at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club on North Cole Road in Boise. There will be a Kid's Day Tennis Clinic free of charge before and after the match. Children 11 and younger are invited to come to the Racquet and Swim Club at 4 p.m. Youths 12 and up are welcome to take part in a clinic and games after the match.

The Boise State women's tennis team will host Weber State today. The match gets underway at 10 a.m. at the Boas Indoor Tennis Facility.
Boise State Track Team Hosts Bronco Classic Today
Another slate of top track teams will be at the Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa today for the Bronco Classic. Boise State welcomes 15 teams, including UCLA, Washington, Utah State, Nevada and Fresno State today in the fifth of six home indoor meets.
Boise State's men are ranked #72 in the latest rankings while the Bronco women are #119. The meet gets underway at 9 a.m. this morning with the women's high jump. The mixed 800-meter run will get track activities going at 10:10 a.m. Tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students.
Tickets for the NCAA National Indoor Track and Field Championships are also on sale in the ticket box at Jacksons Track. Boise State will host the Championships at Jacksons Track March 9-10. All-session passes are $50 for Adult Reserved, $45 for Adult General Admission, #7 for Senior/Student Reserved and 30 for Senior/Student General Admission. Steve Appleton Dies in Plane Crash
Micron CEO Steve Appleton, a former tennis star at Boise State, was killed at 9 a.m. this morning when his light plane crashed near the Boise airport. Appleton was piloting a single-engine experimental Lancair that caught fire. He was 51 years old.
Appleton came to Boise State in 1978 on a tennis scholarship. As a senior, Steve was captain of the team and won the Big Sky Conference doubles championship. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1982.
Micron has donated generously to Boise State over the years, providing the funding for the Micron Center of Technology on campus. Appleton himself donated the funds and helped design the state-of-the-art Appleton Tennis Center, one of the finest of its kind in the nation.
In 2001, Appleton received Boise State's prestigious Silver Medallion for his service to the university and in May of 2007, he was awarded an honorary doctorate. Appleton served as co-chair of the university's most recent comprehensive fundraising campaign for scholarships, programs and buildings known as Destination Distinction. He was also a Boise State University Foundation board member from 1995-2002 and a lifetime Chaffee Guild member.
Appleton was instrumental in the development of the College of Engineering at Boise State, which offered its first classes in 1996. In 1999, he established the Micron Foundation, which has led to several generous donations to Boise State programs and initiatives, including the Micron Business and Economics Building at the corner of University and Capitol, which is scheduled to open later this year, and doctoral programs in Materials Science and Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Bronco Nation will greatly miss Steve and remember all he did for Boise State.

Three Main Pieces of News at LOI Day

Boise State's Bridges Named to Watch List for USA Player of the Year
Boise State sophomore Devon Bridges was named to the Watch list for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year today, according to the Amateur Softball Association of America. Bridges is the first player from Boise State to earn that distinction and just the seventh in Mountain West Conference history.
Bridges shattered school records for batting average (.393) RBI's (53), walks (37), on-base percentage (.531) and slugging percentage (.785) in her freshman season. She also led the Lady Broncos with 16 home runs and tied for the national lead with three grand slams in earning All-Western Athletic Conference honors and second-team All-Pacific Region.
The 25 finalists for the Collegiate Player of the Year will be announced April 11. That list will be narrowed to 10 on May 9 and three on May 23, with the Player of the Year announced May 29.

Repeat of UNLV--Boise State Loses Heartbreaker
Once again, I'm a little suspicious of a team that takes #12 UNLV to the wire, nearly beats #17 San Diego State on the road and then loses to other Mountain West teams.
Broncos Continue to Lead SD State but Unraveling
Boise State led 33-25 at the half but nothing going their way at the moment. 13:25 left and Boise State leads 37-35.

Boise State Swimming Team Wins Again
The talented Boise State swimming and diving team captured all 16 events in defeating Colorado State 186-105 yesterday at the West Family YMCA in Boise on Senior Day.
Amazing seniors Amber Boucher and Stephanie North each won two individual events and two relays in leading the Broncos. Jennifer Cahill and freshman Heather Harper also had two individual wins for Coach Kristin Hill.
Boise State now prepares for its first Mountain West Conference Championships February 22-25 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Boucher won the 50-yard freestyle by more than half a second with a time of 23.51 and also was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly (55.28). North touched first in the 100-yard backstroke (57.07) and won the 100-yard free by nearly a full second. Boucher and North helped bring the Broncos home in the 200-yard medley and freestyle relays.
Sydney Johansen and Stevie Hughey were the other members of the winning freestyle team and Johansen was a winning member of the medley relay team.
Cahill won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:28.21 and then won the 500-free with a time of 5:05.03. Teammate Brooke Balogh finished second. Harper fought from behind to win the 100 breaststroke (1:06.12), overtaking Colorado State's Kelly Matthews. Harper beat Matthews by four seconds in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:22.05.
Emily Irvin won the 200 free (1:53.65) to lead a Bronco sweep that also included Balogh and Jessica Bottelberghe. Bottleberghe won the 200 backstroke (2:04.97) for her eighth win of her freshman year.
Rachel Heaney led from start to finish in the 200 butterfly, touching in 2:05.94. Christine Raininger won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:09.17.
Amanda Burnett placed first in the three-meter diving with the third-highest score in school history--285.15. Ciera Cortney won the short dive with a score of 271.25, a seasonal best. Shayna Solomon of Colorado State finished second in both events.

Boise State Gets Five More Wins at Jacksons Invite
Despite the presence of Georgia, Utah, and other track powers, Boise State won five more titles today at the Jacksons Invite in Nampa, making nine for the weekend.
Eric Capelle led start to finish to win the 60-meters with a time of 6.91. Manoah Wesson captured the 400-meters (48.11) while Andy Robertson came from behind to win the 800 with a personal best of 1:55.96. Kenny Roseman won the triple jump in his first competitin of the year, clearing 47-3. Freshman Will Lohman took the shot put itle with a mark of 53-7.75.

Senior Bowl Recap
Boise State's Doug Martin led all running backs on the North team with a 4.8 yards-per-carry average. Kellen Moore of the Broncos was the only QB on the North team not to throw an interception. Although the North coaches greatly limited his ability (for example, calling a running play on a third-and eight at the South nine-yard line), Moore finished 6-12 for 50 yards with a long of 23 yards. This despite not getting good protection from his offensive line and having his receivers drop several passes thrown right between the numbers.

"Doug Martin: The Best Running Back This Week" at Senior Bowl
The North coaches aren't letting All-American quarterback Kellen Moore get too many plays, but Boise State running back Doug Martin is shining. Three carries for 18 yards.
North Offensive Line Not As Good As Boise State
Kellen Moore was sacked on consecutive plays by the same guy. Obviously, the North badly needs Nate Potter, Joe Kellogg and the rest of the Bronco offensive line. Boise State's line would never allow that.

Both "starting quarterbacks", Brandon Weeden and Russell Wilson of the South and North, respectively, have thrown interceptions. And we're just in the first quarter.

Kurt Felix of Boise State has dropped out of the Heptathlon. He did not run in the final event, the 1,000 meters. He was well behind Romain Martin of Texas-Arlington, who was having a great meet. Martin was more than 400 points ahead of Felix when the Bronco star withdrew.

Vaisima Wins Weight Throw
Always good when a Bronco defeats a Pac-12 opponent. Utah, which was invited to the Pac-12 over Boise State, couldn't compete in this event as Mele Vaisima threw the weight 64-feet, 7-inches. Utah's top competitor was more than seven feet behind.

Wow. Boise State let nerves get to them in their first trip on the road and it cost them. The Bronco gymnasts needed a score of 195-196 to stay amongst the elite teams in the nation and they got a 193.525.
Southern Utah came from behind to win the competition with a 194.525 while homestanding Utah State scored194.050. Too many 9.1's and 9.2's tonight for the Broncos.

Two more 9.275's on bars by Boise State have allowed USU to take the lead again. Each team has three competitors left. Utah State is competing on the easier floor routine and has 174.50. Boise State is at 174.25.
Boise State Gymnasts Storm Back
Boise State may have started out bad on beam, but the 13th-ranked Broncos have come back with excellent vault and floor routines at the Utah State Triangular in Logan tonight.
The Broncos were down by over 8/10ths of a point after the disastrous beam routine, a lot in gymnastics. However, thanks to a team score of 48.85 on bars and 48.575 on floor, Boise State now is back in it after three rotations with 146.050. Southern Utah has 145.850, just 2/10ths behind. Derrick Harris and Donovan Toban of Cal State Northridge are two others with a chance to return to Nampa for Nationals; Harris has 2,825 points after four events and teammate Toban has 2,777.

Boise State's Alexi Morton beat Brianna LeRoy of the Pac-12 Utah team by 11 points to finish secondhas amassed 3,414 points to 3,403 for LeRoy. Olympia Jewett of Cal State Northridge won the event with a solid performance in all five events and a total of 3,604.

Boise State Wrestlers Host #20 Oregon State Friday
Boise State's young wrestling squad has been improving. Whether it's enough to give Oregon State, the nation's #20 team, a tough fight may be another story.
OSU put away the Broncos in Corvallis earlier this year 32-10 and features five nationally-ranked wrestlers. Sounds a lot like Boise State in past years.
Admission is just $6 for adults, $4 for youth and senior citizens. Action begins Friday night at 7 at Taco Bell Arena.

Boise State Tennis Team Travels for Annual California Trip
Once again, we'll have a good indication of how good #48 Boise State's tennis team is. When they've gone into California and won their matches, they make the NCAA Tournament. When they lose one or both, they don't. Lately, it's been that simple.
The Broncos are in Stanford, California for play in the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Boise State will play the Broncos of #50 Santa Clara Friday at 11 a.m. #6 Stanford meets #62 Saint Mary's in the other match. The winners of those two matches will meet in the Kickoff Weekend championships with the losers also squaring off.
Damian Hume is ranked#25 in singles while James Meredith is #31.

Mike Moser had 18 points and 21 rebounds as #12 UNLV held off a determined Boise State team for a 77-72 win in overtime last night in Taco Bell Arena.
Chase Stanback added 15 points and Oscar Bellfield had 13 for the Runnin' Rebels who couldn't shake the Broncos in the second half. Coach Leon Rice's team battled back to tie the game and send it into overtime. but UNLV took care of business in the extra period as good teams do. Bellfield netted a three-pointer that put Vegas up 70-65 with 2:03 left and Moser sank two free throws in the final minute to seal the win, UNLV's 19th on the season against just three defeats.
Boise State, meanwhile, is still seeking its first Mountain West Conference win, despite the fact that they can play well enough to take UNLV to overtime. They have the start of the game to thank, as UNLV ran out to a 12-0 lad while Boise State missed their first seven shots. Derrick Marks scored a career-high 21 to lead the Broncos and Thomas Bropleh came off the bench to score 17 points and added 13 rebounds.
Boise State had a brief lead 33-31 but Moser hit three pointers, Kendall Wallace buried a trey and Bellfield's layup on a fast break put the Runnin' Rebels up 48-39 with 12:51 left. Tre Nichols then scored nine points in the next five minutes as the Broncos went back on top 56-55. Another three from Bellfield with 4:39 remaining gave UNLV the lead 63-59 and Brice Massamba was able to hit one of two free throws on the next possession to build a 64-59 lead.
Once again, the Broncos battled back. Anthony Drmic hit a three pointer and Marks hit two free throws to tie the game at 64 with 59 seconds left. Both teams had shots in the final minute but couldn't break the tie.
Despite the poor start, Boise State proved that playing good defense can keep you in a game, even if it is against the nation's 12th-best team. A baseline drive that Marks finished with a punctuating dunk led his team back, and his jumper with 43 seconds left gave Boise State its first lead of the game 27-26. Just Hawkins gave UNLV the lead at halftime 29-27 on a three-pointer with eight seconds left.

Jacksons Invite Draws Top Talent
The prestige of hosting the NCAA National Indoor Track & Field Championships has its benefits.
Once again, some of the top talent in the country is coming to Idaho for a regular-season meet (They want to get a feel for the track they'll be competing on for Nationals.) Georgia is the top draw at the Jacksons Invite this week; the Bulldog women are #13 in the nation while the UGA men are #23. Other nationally-ranked teams include Utah, Utah State, Idaho State and Weber State, while 12 other collegiate teams will be in town. Over 600 student-athletes are scheduled to compete.
Kurt Felix, Boise State's all-around athlete and great guy, is ranked #8 in the nation in the heptathlon and 22nd in the high jump, while Eetu Viitala is #13 in the long jump and Trevor Kraychir is 16th in the weight throw. Mele Vaisima (#24 in the weight throw) and Alexi Morton (#25 in the pentathlon) are the only Bronco women in the Top 25.
The women's pentathlon will get things rolling Friday at 10:30. The 60-meter dash starts the men's heptathlon Friday morning at 11. Individual events kick off at 4 p.m. Friday. There is a full schedule for Saturday, with events beginning at 9 a.m. Tickets are just $5 per session with students and senior citizens admitted for $3. An even better is the All Sports Pass, which I helped initiate at Boise State. For only $50, the Pass entitles to a year's admission of all wrestling, softball, women's basketball, gymnastics, volleyball, soccer and outdoor track and field.

Great Effort By Boise State Falls Short in Overtime
Boise State can't play any better than they did tonight. They took #12 UNLV down to the wire and then some, before falling in overtime 77-72.
A five-point loss. To a team that is now 19-3 on the season. The problem with this of course is this: If they can take UNLV to overtime, they shouldn't lose to anyone the rest of the season except UNLV and San Diego State. Yep, the Broncos have let the cat out of the bag as to how good they are and how well they can play.
So we'll all be watching as you go on a long winning streak from here Broncos. Anything else would be a letdown after tonight.

Boise State Hosts #12 UNLV Wednesday Night
Boise State will host #12 UNLV tomorrow night (Wednesday) in Taco Bell Arena and will be trying for their first Mountain West Conference victory.
The Broncos downed the Rebels 84-69 the last time the two teams met in Boise. The occasion was the 2004 National Invitation Tournament. UNLV defeated Boise State 75-72 last year in Las Vegas.
Boise State is 4-6 at home against Top 25 teams, including two in a row, defeating #20 BYU (73-70) in 2007 and #21 Utah State (66-56) in 2009.
Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. Wednesday night.

Jimmy Lake is New Boise State Defensive Backs Coach
According to numerous sources, Jimmy Lake will be the new defensive backs coach at Boise State. He has some big shoes to fill with the departure of popular Marcel Yates to Texas A&M. Yates not only had a strong rapport with his players; he was also one of Boise State's best recruiters because of his connection to student-athletes.
Lake has been a coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL in a similar position.
Prior to that, Lake was the cornerbacks coach at the University of Washington and he coached DB's at Eastern Washington for four seasons. Lake is a 2000 graduate of Eastern Washington.

Tyler Shoemaker with 1 catch for 8 yards
We're in the second half of the East-West Shrine Game. Boise State wide receiver Tyler Shoemaker, who broke the school record for touchdown receptions this year with Kellen Moore throwing to him, has one catch for eight yards.
If they're not careful, they're going to realize that Kellen Moore is a much better quarterback than they think he is. The current West QB's aren't breaking any records.

Boise State Turns Back Oregon State 148-114
As promised, Blue Through and Through has the swimming results before anyone in the state of Idaho. The Broncos downed Oregon State today 148-114.
Broncos Falling Apart in Fort Worth
Something happened on the way to their first Mountain West win. The Broncos had a comfortable 31-21 lead at the half but now with 1:38 left, they trail 54-50 to TCU. Boise State is shooting just 37% from the field and just 65% from the free-throw line.

Lady Broncos Host TCU Tonight
Coach Gordy Presnell's team has fared well in the beginning of the Mountain West Conference season. Tonight, the Lady Broncos host TCU in a key battle. Tipoff is at 7 in Taco Bell Arena.
Boise State Swimming Team Hosts Oregon State Today
The talented Boise State swimming and diving team hosts Oregon State today at the Boise West YMCA. It is underway and Blue Through and Through will be first in Idaho to provide you with results.
Bronco Basketball Team Takes on TCU
Boise State's basketball team, reeling from a pair of losses to open the Mountain West season, have to rally around each other this afternoon. They are in Forth Worth, Texas for a meeting with TCU. Tipoff is at 1:30.
Bronco Gymnasts Score Resounding Victory
The Boise State gymnastics team turned in another solid performance in defeating Sacramento State 196.175 to 191.875 in the 10th annual Beauty and the Beast competition in Taco Bell Arena. And they even brought along the Bronco wrestlers for a win. The young Bronco wrestling team, which has yet to step into the shoes of graduating seniors who established Boise State as a then-national power, defeated North Dakota State 21-16.
Junior Brittany Potvin-Green had two career bests to lead the Lady Broncos to the impressive victory. Potvin-Green won he vault with a score of 9.875, placed second on the beam with a 9.80, placed third on the floor with a career-best 9.850 and finished third on the uneven bars with a mark of 9.825. Potvin-Green thus delighted the crowd of 2,845 and captured her first career all-around title with a sparkling 39.350.
Erica Oswalt finished second in the vault with a career-best 9.850. Senior Lindsay Kazandjian and freshman Kelsey Morris tied for the top uneven bars score, each notching career-bests of 9.850. The Broncos' biggest chance for improvement is on the beam, where Potvin-Green and Kazandjian tied for second with 9.80 scores. The Broncos, as a team, however, scored only 48.775 points.
Amanda Otuafi registered a career-best of her own of 9.90 to win the floor competition.
Sacramento State earned team scores of 48.625 on vault, 48.150 on bars, 46.625 on beam and 48.475 on floor.
The Broncos travel to Logan next Friday for a tough match against Utah State and Southern Utah.

Broncos Prevail over Utah State 5-2
The Boise State women's tennis team opened its 2012 campaign with a 5-2 win over Utah State at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center in Bose. Sonia Klamczynska, Marlena Pietzuch, Sandy Vo and Morgan Basil recorded singles wins to boost the Broncos to victory.
Basil and Vo got the afternoon started with an 8-1 win at #2 doubles. Boise State clinched the doubles point when Klamczynska and Kaitlyn Brown downed Monica Abella and Brianna Rowland-Harris 8-2 at #3 doubles. Utah State won the first singles match to be decided as Abella defeated Brown 6-0, 6-2. Vo came in next, winning her match 6-1, 6-1.
USU drew even again when McKenzie Davis downed Manuela Pietzuch 6-4, 6-2. But all three remaining Broncos won their matches to give their team a win. Marlena Pietzuch took care of business at #2 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win, Basil captured a 6-3, 6-3 victory and Klamczynska brought it home with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jaci West at #1 singles.
The Lady Broncos host Denver Sunday morning at the Boas Center off of Boise Avenue. The match begins at 9 a.m.
