Boise State Lets #22 Oklahoma Off the Hook

Boise State won a dramatic first set 25-22.  But the nationally-ranked Sooners have come back for a 25-19 win in the second.  Boise State won 25-18 in the third set.  Boise State needed one more set to get a signature win and wanted to win the fourth set.  Despite being ahead in the early going, Oklahoma won the fourth 25-16 and won it in 5 15-4.  Boise State let this one get away.

It was the only loss in any sport this weekend for Boise State.

Boise State Volleyball Team Wins Third Straight at Sooner Invitational

Boise State's volleyball team recorded its fourth consecutive sweep in defeating Arkansas-Little Rock 25-19, 2-16, 25-15 at the Sooner Legends Nike Invitational in Norman, Oklahoma.

Coach Shawn Garus' team is now 8-3 as Fiona Jones and Darlene Nwagbuo had 11 kills apiece.

That sets the Broncos up for a match against #22 Oklahoma (12-3), the host school in the tournament.  That match gets underway at 4 p.m. Mountain Time.

"I am really proud with the way the team has played this week," commented head coach Garus.  "We are developing consistent play across the board and have had numerous individuals step up and contribute to the team's success."

Breaan Nesselhug had 23 assists while Casey Rose had 20.  Amanda Remy had a team-high 12 digs for Boise State.

Paige Gantar led Arkansas-Little Rock with 11 points on 10 kills (.421) and two block assists, followed by Edina Begic with nine points on nine kills.

Boise State Records Second Sweep of the Day

Boise State came back from a 3-0 win over Texas Southern to sweep Arkansas-Pine Bluff 25-9, 25-13, 25-14. 

 

Breann Nesselhuf had seven kills to lead the Broncos to their third straight sweep and seventh win in 10 matches this season.

"I am really happy with the way the team played today with two solid performances heading into tomorrow's matches when the competition will pick up a notch with Little Rock (University of Arkansas-Little Rock) and Oklahoma," said head coach Shawn Garus.  "We had a lot of people step up for us today especially our young players. Leah (Stevens) had a great match against Pine Bluff (University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff) as did Taylor (Murphey). I thought our upperclassmen did a good job leading the team on the floor. Breann (Nesselhuf), Liz (Harden) and Darlene (Nwagbuo) were steady for us in this match which gave the team confidence. "

Boise State hit 43 percent for the match.  Stevens had 11 points and nine kills and Casey Rose chalked up a career high 26 assists.

 

UAPB was led by Alexis Lowe with 5.5 points on five kills and one block assist, followed by Rachel Hornbuckle with five points on four kills and two block assists.

Bronco Volleyball Team Gets Sweep in Sooner Invitational

The Boise State volleyball team is playing well, setting a school record for match hitting percentage in defeating Texas Southern 25-8, 25-15, 25-4 at the Sooner Legends Nike Invitational in Norman, Oklahoma.

Boise State hit 58.5% with freshman Brittany Reardon recording the second-best hitting percentage individually (11-13 or 84.6%).

"I was happy with the way the team played, it was a good way for us to start the tournament out," said head coach Shawn Garus.  "We hit the ball extremely well and capitalized on what they gave us. We were able to get some of our young players into the match for quality experience. I was real happy with the way Brittany (Reardon) and Taylor (Murphey) played in the match."

Reardon added three block assists to lead the team with 26 this season.  Breann Nesselhuf had six kills, two aces, two block assists, 19 assists and four digs.  Freshman Taylor Murphey had six kills while Casey Rose had 19 assists and three aces.

Mona Reed led Texas outhern with five kills.

Efaw Now All Alone for Tight End Receiving Record

Boise State tight end Kyle Efaw set the all-time record for receiving yards by a tight end last week.  This week, he moved out of a three-way tie for receptions by a tight end, grabbing his 79th career pass in the Broncos' 40-15 win over Toledo.

Kellen Moore Moved From #32 to #20 All-Time Last Night

In one night, Kellen Moore moved from #32 to #20 in NCAA history in career passing yards, as the Bronco senior sensation threw for 455 yards against Toledo.  

Moore passed great quarterbacks like Peyton Manning, Chris Leak, Daunte Culpepper, Max Hall and David Greene on a single evening and now has 11,583 in his career.  In Saturday's home opener in Bronco Stadium against Tulsa, Moore is on target to pass four more significant collegiate signal-callers:  #19 Carson Palmer, #18 Brady Quinn, #17 Drew Brees and #17 Chase Holbrook.

Moore doesn't run an offense that would allow him to set the record set by Hawai'i's Timmy Chang (17,072), for the Broncos are as tough and physical in their running game as they are innovative in their passing attack.  But if the Bronco offensive line can keep Moore healthy the entire year, #3, currently held by Brigham Young's Ty Detmer, who finished with 15,031 career yards from 1988-1991, is a reasonable target.

Boise State Soccer Team Squeaks By South Dakota 1-0

Freshman Shannon Schuren gave the Boise State soccer team all the offense it needed, booting a short kick to the back of the net to give the Lady Broncos a 1-0 victory over South Dakota this afternoon in two overtimes in Omaha, Nebraska.  Bronco senior goalkeeper Liz Ruiz tied Kim Parker as the winningest goalie in school history with her 26th career win.





Schuren headed in the game-winner just last week against Portland as well.  Katy Oehring juked past a defender and sent a cross to the waiting Schuren, who now has a team-leading three goals and seven points this season. 


Boise State outshot the Coyotes 10-4 in the first period but of course it's goals that matter and none found the mark.  


"We were really good in the first half," said head coach Steve Lucas. "We could have had one or two goals in the first 20 minutes and that would have changed the game but we let them stay in it."


Boise State is now 4-5 this season and will try to finally even its season mark when they go against Creighton Sunday at noon Mountain Time.

Broncos Get 40-15 Win Over Toledo on the Road

Quarterback Kellen Moore had a career night, leading Boise State to a hard-fought 40-15 win over Toledo in the Glass Bowl this evening.


Don't let the score fool you--the Rockets team that came within 16 yards of beating Ohio State in Columbus last Saturday (27-22) gave Boise State all they could handle.  Missed tackling by the usually reliable Bronco defense consistently gave Toledo third-down conversions and confidence.  It almost didn't matter the distance Toledo had to go on third down--the Rockets converted, especially in the first half.


But a team isn't measured by one or two possessions or one or two quarters but by 60 minutes of work.  Overall, the Broncos passed their road test, albeit with sputters and stops.  Toledo struck first with a 24-yard pass from Austin Dantin to tight end Danny Noble.  The extra point failed but the home team had drawn first blood.  Moore led Boise State on a nine-play 68-yard drive of their own, finishing with a 26-yard pass over the middle to Tyler Shoemaker, who had three TD receptions on the night.  On Boise State's next possession, Moore dumped a pass off to running back Doug Martin, who broke tackles and with some brilliant running, raced to the end zone for a 71-yard TD.  Dan Goodale's kick was wide left and the Broncos led 13-6.


Moore and Shoemaker hooked up again in the second quarter on a fade pattern.  The ball bounced off the Toledo defender's helmet but Shoemaker secured it just before going out of bounds for the score.  To Toledo's credit, they came back thanks to a super catch by All-American receiver Eric Page, getting his right toe down on the left sideline.  That prepared the way for Ryan Casano to boot a 35-yard field goal shortly before halftime and the teams headed into the locker room with the Broncos leading 20-9.


Moore led Boise State to another score in the third as he found tight end Kyle Efaw from 12 yards out.  At one point in the second half, the Bronco senior quarterback hit 15-of-17 passes, and he fired touchdown pass #5 in the fourth with a 17-yard strike to Shoemaker.  Reserve running back Drew Wright rumbled in from eight yards out for Boise State's final score of the night, shortly after Adonis Thomas scored the second touchdown for Toledo on a one-yard run.


Moore finished the night with a career-high 32 completions out of 42 attempts for 455 yards and five TD's.  Kellen's evening placed him in the single-game Boise State record book in four different places.  His performance places him third in completions (32), #4 in passing yards (455), tied for second all-time in touchdown passes (5) and fifth in total offense yards (457).  Moore broke out of a tie with former Bronco great Jim McMillan and is now #2 all-time with three games of 400 passing yards or more.  


Martin kept the Toledo defense guessing with an excellent display of all-purpose running.  Martin had 19 carries for 70 yards to pace the Bronco rushing attack, caught five passes for 122 yards and the touchdown and pushed his single-game all-purpose total to 252 with 60 yards on kickoff returns.  Martin moved into the #6 slot in career rushing at Boise State (2,316 yards), passing Jeremy Avery, who finished his career with 2,268 yards.  Martin passed K.C. Adams (490) and Jeff Carpenter (491) for sixth place all-time for receiving yards by a running back.  Martin now has 632 in his career. 


Shoemaker's hat trick enabled the senior receiver to tie Bronco great Kipp Bedard for 20th all-time with 13 career TD receptions.  Several members of the Bronco receiving corps got into the action as Mitch Burroughs had six receptions for 76 yards, freshman Matt Miller had six catches for 65, Shoemaker had four catches for 52 yards and Kirby Moore had four receptions for 46.


Terrance Owens finished the game 17-of-31 for 207 yards for Toledo while Thomas paced the Rocket ground game with14 carries for 65 yards and the touchdown.  Page led Toledo with eight receptions but the Bronco defense was able to limit his yards per catch, something Ohio State could not do, as Boise State held Page to 59 yards (7.4 yards per reception)


Boise State improved to 2-0 with the road win while Toledo is 1-2 with both losses coming against Top 15 teams.  The victory marked the 40th career victory for a Boise State senior class for the 10th straight year.  After three weeks, the Broncos finally have their home opener next Saturday against Tulsa.

Doug Martin #6 All-Time in Receiving Yards by a Running Back

With an exceptional game tonight (122 yards receiving), Doug Martin is now at least #6 in Boise State history for career receiving yards by a running back with 632 receiving yards.  The Boise State staff did not produce receiving yards in the 1980 season, and I believe David Hughes had enough that year to keep him ahead of Martin.  In fact, Hughes could be as high as #2.  I am trying to ascertain the 1980 yards for Hughes by digging into the past Bronco games myself and will try to have an update soon.

Search Committee Set for New Boise State Athletic Director

Boise State President Bob Kustra has appointed a 14-member search committee to recommend candidates for the vacant athletic director position at Boise State.

Tommy Gallarda Signed By Atlanta

One of the many great young men Boise State is fortunate enough to have passed through its ranks is Tommy Gallarda, and I am happy to announce that Tommy has been signed by the Atlanta Falcons to the practice squad.  Atlanta had a unfortunate injury at the tight end position and they have Tommy a call to come to Atlanta.

Cedric Febis Back With Boise State in Toledo

Very good news for the senior.  For the other two young men who have done nothing wrong, the NCAA is still asking questions but Boise State hopes to get the matter cleared up next week.

The real shame here is that a booster of another team sent information to the NCAA that forced Boise State to not bring Cedric Febis to the Georgia game, obviously a game that would have been a highlight of his career.  It turns out that the booster was incorrect--Boise State in fact did nothing wrong regarding Cedric, his host family did nothing wrong, and he shouldn't have missed the game, his first start of his career. 

What should happen is that the team connected with the booster should have violations for reporting incorrect information about Febis to the NCAA.  But we know that will never happen.  And we don't know if the other two are OK or not but we do know that there was nothing involving Febis that should have led to him missing the game and yet this booster of the other team reported there was.

Boise State Football Season Is Sold Out

The word I get is that all tickets for the 2011 home football season at Boise State are gone.  Of course, with the ridiculous student ticket policy, several will go on sale at the last minute before the game and likely go unsold.  Of course, a new Athletic Director very well could change that policy.

Three Recruits Set To Visit Boise State

According to Scout.com, three football recruits will visit Boise State and be on the sidelines for the game with Tulsa.  One, Andrew Pint, has already committed to the Broncos.  The other two are highly-regarded safety Reggie Daniels (6-2, 185) from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona and talented defensive tackle Aaron Curry (6-3, 272) from Fossil Ridge High School in Keller, Texas.

Student-Athletes Coming From All Over the Globe to Play at Boise State

Defensive end Elliot Hoyte of Tavistock, England has accepted a scholarship offer to play at Boise State and will enroll in school this coming January.  Hoyte, who has been called the best defensive line prospect in ten years, joins an already stellar 2012 recruiting class at Boise State.  Meanwhile, Rory Connop (6-4, 265) from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada has chosen to play at Boise State over offers from Kansas, Pittsburgh and Tulsa.

Hoyte's father, Nigel, played in the World Football League in the 1990's and is now a national team coach in the U.K. 




“I still wake up in the morning and read the letter they sent me — it still feels pretty surreal,” Elliot Hoyte told the Tavistock Times Gazette. “It’s really the opportunity I’ve been waiting for. I’m really looking forward to it — I’m a bit apprehensive, I don’t think there’s anything I can’t handle from the sporting side, the only thing I think I will struggle with is not seeing my family for such a long time.”




Connop never played high school football but played with the West Edmonton Raides football club.

Travis Stanaway Earns Start at Safety

Travis Stanaway, who played much of the second half against Georgia, has earned the starting nod for Friday's game with Toledo.  The game will be televised nationally on ESPN Friday night at 6 Mountain Time.

NCAA Report on Boise State Violations

The report went about as expected.  The men's and women's tennis programs and track programs were the hardest hit, with the women's tennis program ineligible for post-season play following this season for one year.  That latter penalty is the harshest of the investigation, but it is a reminder to boosters and the university to toe the line or pay the penalty.

The football program loses three scholarships per year for three years because players bought other players tacos at Taco Bell.  Boise State essentially imposed this penalty on themself for this year, and the NCAA extended this penalty for two more years.

I've told people for years not to talk to potential recruits and not to buy current student-athletes so much as a Coke.  This is why.
