Fresno State Ends Broncos' Season
Unfortunately, the WAC Softball Tournament went exactly as I had projected it, with Boise State finishing third. Fresno State beat the Broncos tonight 3-2 to end their season. It will be hometown Fresno State against #1 seed New Mexico State in the final tomorrow afternoon.

WAC Softball Tournament: Fresno State Leading Lousiana Tech
Fresno has a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 7th. This is a rematch from their first-round game in which Tech won. Boise State awaits the winner tonight at 8. The winner of that game will meet New Mexico State in te championship tomorrow afternoon and must win twice to be crowned WAC Champion.

However, the Bronco defense is letting them down this time. Both teams had five hits, but Boise State committed three errrors, and New Mexico State had a 4-0 lead after 4 and a half. Still manageable. But, a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth had Boise State facing a 7-0 deficit. Boise State plays well against everyone in the conference but when they meet New Mexico State, they fall apart.
New Mexico State gets a berth in the championship. Boise State faces the winner of the Fresno State-Louisiana Tech game at 8 p.m. tonight in order to get there.

In the Cup Standings I posted earlier, I mentioned that if the Boise State men's track team finished ahead of Fresno State, Boise State would clinch the WAC Commissioner's Cup. I just analyzed all the data from softball and track and here is another path:
If the Boise State softball team wins today, Boise State will also all but clinch the Cup. This is because the Lady Broncos would get a minimum of 3.5 points for postseason in softball and the most Fresno State could get would be 4 for postseason. Fresno State is likely to get 6.5 points for baseball (second place in the regular season and first in the tournament). There are still two weeks left in that season--currently Hawai'i is 13-4 and Fresno State is 13-7. The highest that Fresno State can now finish in women's track is third place while Boise State could get last, resulting in a five-point advantage there. The lowest that Boise State can now finish in men's track is third and the highest Fresno State can finish is first, resulting in a two-point difference.

With Utah State and Hawai'i eliminated from the WAC Softball Championships, here are the up-to-date Commissioner's Cup Standings. As I mentioned in the other post, Utah State and New Mexico State have been eliminated from taking the Cup this year. The maximum that both schools can now reach will not catch Boise State.

Which Receiver (s) Will Now Hop Aboard Boise State?
Recruits have all kinds of reasons for choosing which school they want to go to, but if I'm a receiver, I jump all over Boise State with quarterback Nick Patti committed. The other things are all great, but if I'm a football player, I sure as heck want a great quarterback thowing to me. Patti is that guy.

Patti Commits to Boise State
Last Week, I told you that Boise State was interested in Florida quarterback Nick Patti. Now we know that the feeling is mutual as several sources have said that Patti has committed to Boise State. According to the reports, Patti will be the only quarterback in the 2012 Recruting Class.
According to my source in Florida, Patti is the top quarterback in the state. He won MVP quarterback awards at Nike camps in both Miami and Tallahassee. He completed 66.9% of his throws for 28 touchdowns and just one interception. Not only can he sling the ball like Kellen Moore, but he has 4.49 speed in the 40. Patti ran for 377 yards as a junior.
Patti's father, Ed, was interviewed by the Orlando Sentinel, and had this to say:
"As a father, when you hand your son over to somebody you want to have a lot of respect for the person you are handing him over to. "Chris Petersen is the real deal."
Nick did not see any program that was able to match Boise State, as he explained to the Sentinel:
"I don't see that happening and that's why I pulled the trigger so soon," Nick said. "Anyone could come and put them right next to Boise and it would still be the best place for me."

WAC Track Championships: Jones Finishes 3rd in Long Jump
Boise State's Racquel Jones was third yesterday in the long jump at the WAC Track Championships, jumping 19-10.25. Louisiana Tech senior Chelsea Hayes won the event with a jump of 20-10. Boise State's Alexi Morton, who finished third in the heptathlon Wednesday, came back and finished fifth with a jump of 18-7.25.

As expected, Boise State dominated the men's long jump yesterday, led by Eetu Viitala, who jumped 24-5 to win the competition by a foot. Rolando Trammel finished secodn (23-2.75) while Joshua Butler was sixth (21-4.75).
WAC Track Championships: Thomee and Cartwright Go 1-2 in Javelin
Boise State's Pontus Thomee and Alex Cartwright went according to seed yesterday, taking the top two spots in the javelin at the WAC Track Championships. Thomee hurled the spear 211-feet, 8 inches, while Cartright came close at 209-10.
Sawyer Bosch Wins Steeplechase
Boise State's Sawyer Bosch proved his #1 seed was deserving, as he won the 3000-meter steeplechase yesterday at the WAC Track Championships in Honolulu. Bosch completed the course in 8:55.80, edging Utah State's Daniel Howell by half a second. Teammate Kevin Higgs finished fifth in 9:15.12.

With the results yesterday from softball and track, Utah State and New Mexico State have both been eliminated from the WAC Commissioner's Cup race. Even if those two schools finished as high as possible the rest of the way, they can not catch Boise State. It's down to a two-school race between the Broncos and Fresno State.
Another easy item to follow--if the Boise State men's track team finishes ahead of Fresno State (it doesn't matter which position), Boise State will clinch the Cup. In any case, we could know as early as today if Boise State has clinched its second Cup win in four years.

Broncos Win Thriller Against Louisiana Tech 3-2
First of all, I want to say that Megan Krieg of Louisiana Tech is amazing. She first shut down Fresno State on two hits on their home field, then allowed just two runs through 12 innings against a powerful Boise State team. She struck out 16 but walked 8 (actually can't believe the Tech coach left her in that long). I guess they figured she was doing so amazing that once they took her out, Tech would lose their best chance.
Holly Bourke's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 13th inning finally ending the marathon. I'm surprised that Tech came back and won its game last night after going 13 with Boise State. Credit Lela Work who usually does spot duty but yesterday pitched I believe the last 9 innings, hold Tech down.
Meanwhile, the Broncos get their shot at New Mexico State this afternoon at 3 Mountain Time. Boise State needs to win one of the next two games to reach the championship game.

The Wahine are proving that it is possible to shut down the Aggies as well, stifling them by allowing just four hits so far. The score stands 4-1 after five with Hawai'i batting again in the sixth.
The winner of this game meets the winner of the Boise State-Louisiana Tech game for a spot in the WAC Championship. Homestanding Fresno State awaits the loser in Game Five today at 5:30 p.m. Mountain Time.

Bridges, Crump and Zell Named To All-WAC Softball Team
Three members of the Boise State softball team that narrowly missed out on winning the WAC regular season were named to the all-conference team, according to the league office.
Freshman slugger Devon Bridges and junior hurlers Allie Crump and Aubray Zell were named to the team. Juniors Christina Capobianco and Tazz Weatherly also picked up recognition, being named to the league's second team.

Shockingly, Fresno State and Louisiana Tech were locked in a pitcher's dual in the battle of the Bulldogs in Fresno. In Game Two of the tournament, Meghan Krieg allowed just two hits and Erin Kipp socked a two-run homer in the sixth inning to lead the upstart Bulldogs from Ruston into the semifinals.

Think Positive Thoughts for the Boise State Softball Team!
The way I have it projected, Boise State should finish third in the WAC Softball Tournament. I would love for the team to prove me wrong. And don't be mistaken; I have been saying all season long that the Broncos had an excellent chance to win the championship, either in the regular season or the tournament. They couldn't quite get over the hump in Las Cruces, but don't count them out, especially since the tournament is a one-game playoff in each round.
I know they would love to have another shot at New Mexico State but I have them losing to Fresno State and not reaching the championship game. Again, it could go either way so keep your best thoughts directed towards the Boise State softball team.

Morton Finishes Fifth in 100-Meter Hurdles
The Heptathlon is underway at the WAC Track Championships in Honolulu. Boise State's Alexi Morton finished fifth in 100-meter hurdles. She ran it in 14.63. Not to worry, this event is not her specialty.

Slight Change to WAC Commissioner's Cup Projections
I have changed the baseball projections to reflect the new standings in the WAC. The other projections for softball and track are unchanged, but you may want to take a look at the new Cup Projections by clicking here.
WAC Track Championships--Boise State Not Entering a Decathlete
Remember last week, I gave you the projections for the WAC Track Championships which start today in Honolulu. I also mentioned that if Boise State had an entry in the men's decathlon, they had a shot at the men's title.
The Heat Sheets are out for the Championships and the Broncos do not have anyone in the decathlon. Often, what can happen is if an athlete is entered in the decathlon (especially if he isn't used to competing in it), it will wear him out so that he is unable to compete at the same level in his regular events. That likely is why Boise State is not entering anyone. Kurt Felix, Boise State's multi-event star, is being redshirted this outdoor season so he can compete next year. So the logic is that any points gained from the decathlon would probably be lost in the specialty events that the decathlete competes in.

The ones competing for the Broncos will be the same ones that have done so all year. Thus, the projection for third place still holds. Boise State's Softball Time Announced
Saturday, we were the first source to tell you that Boise State would be playing the winner of the Fresno State-Louisiana Tech game Thursday as well as announcing the other pairings in the WAC Softball Tournament. We now know the time--it will be at 3 p.m. Mountain Time.
